Has anyone stayed at The Lakefront Anchorage - formerly Millennium Alaskan Hotel Anchorage? Trying to decided on a hotel for our stay in the area prior to sailing. Also how close is it to the train station? We are looking into taking the train to Seward.

Thanks

The Lakefront is fairly close to the airport...and it has an airport shuttle...it is no where close to the RR station. Probably 10-15 miles or so...the city of Anchorage is actually larger than the state of Delaware...It is spread out all over the place...The hotel is also the headquarters for the Iditarod race in the winter and has a lot of animals on display. They may have a shuttle to the airport. It has a decent bar, and a nice outside deck to watch the planes take off from the floatplane lake...Lake Hood...The restaurant is fairly expensive, even by Alaskan standards, but there are options near by. They do have a shuttle a couple of times a day to the downtown area where most of the tourist things are...and there is a bus that stops not too far from there...(few blocks)

Actually it is only 4.1 miles per Google Maps and per my own experience that seems very accurate.

That is a very deceptive statement. Sure the "city" of Anchorage is large, extending from Eagle River or further north to the Girdwood area. But the city of Anchorage that most tourists would think of as "Anchorage" is fairly compact. Heck from the airport (far west) to Glen Alps trailheads (far east) is only about 15 miles. North/south from say downtown to Dimond is something like 7 miles. So really nowhere near the size of the state of Delaware :)

The Lakefront is nice although as mentioned about 5 miles from the train station. It’s located on Lake Hood that is supposed to be the busiest seaplane base in the world. They did renovations a few years ago and there is no better place to watch the planes take off and land.

It’s a better place to have a car although a cab to the train station would be $20-25. At least in the Flying Machine Restaurant, I didn’t find it any more expensive than any other place that was similar. Pub food.

If you get in early enough and are looking for things to do in that area, there is the Alaska Aviation Museum and a Segway operator near there. We did the Segway tour last spring on a beautiful day. They take you around the lake while the planes are coming and going. Quite fun.
