We will be in Sendai & Shimizu in October. Any ideas for DIY excursions in these cities? How easy is it to get around? Public transportation? Are there ATMs near the ports?

Any suggestions of interesting sights or things to do will be welcome.

Thank you

Bid

A few years back, we cruised on the Crystal Harmony and Shimizu was one of the ports. -- Our ship is Japanese owned and the welcome we got was over the top. We enjoyed the performances, exhibitions and impromptu food stalls. -- Folks were on day tours to visit Mr. Fuji from this port.

Hi Bid, I know it`s been four years, but how was Shimizu? Did you do your own thing, and if so, do you have any recommendations? Thank you!

In Sendai see the site, might try to Loope Sendai (their Hop On Hop Off bus)

One reason that cruise ships stop in Shimizu is to view Mt Fuji (but covered by clouds most of the time) and to visit Hakone. If you have not been to Japan before or not going on a land tour, I suggest that you take an excursion (through the ship or private) to the Hakone area. I don't think it's possible to do this on your own and to see all of the sites including the boat ride across the lake.. See the site

Most ports in Japan have a welcome and departure event (entertainment). The Shimizu departure entertainment was the best that we saw on our cruise. It was a group of children performing dance routines.

What is the port called where cruise ships dock for Sendai?

Is there a bus offered from the dock?

how far is dock from city?

Appreciate the help.

Sorry, I can't help on the dock, we went to Sendai on a land trip.

The main area of Sendai I don't think was affected by the 2011 earthquake and Tsunami so there are shrines and other things to see in the area.
