Calling Carnival cruisers

Recommended Posts

I am booked for Carnival Legend in April

The rules and regs when you are filling in the personal info say that if you choose a debit/credit card to pay your on board account you will be charged 1.5% fee.

I could not believe this so asked Carnival head office and got a yes we do.

However as we know the head office staff often does not know enough I am askling those who have cruised Carnival from Australia on the Legend IS THERE A CHARGE?

The USA Carnival people ay never so now asking Australian cruisers

All the local Carnival operations (Princess, P&O, Carnival) have the same approach, just like many hotels and other hospitality businesses.

Some of your Princess cruises are overseas which would not have been charged. But it is standard for local ones to be charged.

They do make mention of it on their site: "Please note that a 1.5% service fee applies to credit and debit card payments."

I have 23 cruises with Princess most of them starting from Australia and we have never been charged a 1.5% fee

Was on Carnival Spirit out of Sydney last year, no % added to Bill.

Post #8 says was charged so looks like a new fee being applied.

If you sail out of a non-Aus Port you will most likely be charged in US$ and have a 3% conversion fee applied by your Credit Card.

I have heard back from Carnival that I can add cash to my account after my $700 has been used and not therefore have to pay for the use of a credit card

With regard to the 3% conversion fee We always tell the cruise company to bill our card in whatever it is the on board account is using and our credit card company 28 degrees give an excelelent exchange rate and do not charge for using a foreign currencxy

Here is a little trick that my missus discovered, when we went on board for our P&O cruise we linked our cruise card to our dedit card, this allowed her to run up the bill

and did not have to continually stand in long lines to add cash to cruise card.

Then on the last day of final account she paid paid it in cash, no charges no fuss.

Yes, that's their alternative to avoid the fee. They take cash onboard, with no fee charged in that case.

There is no need to line up in long lines on Carnival. They have 2 machines on board where you can add cash to your Sail & Sign account. One is next to guest services and the other near the Casino. It takes only a couple of minutes. You can also print out an account statement.

Hi

Do these machines take cash or you transfer funds from your Credit or debit card to your cruise account to save taking cash onboard?

Cheers

The machines take cash. You can cash from the ATM but there is a fee.

We cruised on the Carnival Legend in October and were charged the credit card fee. It wasn't itemised on the account, but the total was more than the sum of the individual items. I queried it at the guest services desk and was told it was the credit card charge. I don't know why it wasn't shown as a separate item. I wonder if the others in this thread who say they didn't pay the charge in fact did, but didn't realise it.

It's possible. Though credit card charges are supposed to be clearly shown as a separate item.

I think Cash is the way to go for us I got the following from Carnival head office after asking what would we be expected to put down on our account if we chose cash.

The following minimum cash deposits are recommended:

¨ 2 - 4 day cruise: $100 per person

¨ 5 - 8 day cruise: $200 per person

¨ 9 days or longer: $350 per person

As the guest approaches the deposit limit, Guest Services will notify the guest that additional money must be deposited.

My wife and i are going on our first cruise in march on the legend. Say we bring cash and deposit that first then when that runs out and we deposit more funds via eftpos at guest services will we be hit with the fee?

Thanks for your reply in advance

Andrew

At guest services you can only pay with cash, or credit/debit card.

However, Legend does have an ATM as well, so if you prefer you could withdraw cash from it and then pay at guest services. ATM withdrawals do have a fee.
