passports??

If im leaving Galveston Tx going to Progressoand Cozumel then back to Galvweston , Do i need a passport...? I read on a forum that alwaya leave your passport in the cabin safe... dont you need it when your getting off in mexico? Thanks in advance..

If you are on a closed loop cruise (from and to the same US port), US citizen, and you have a state issued (not hospital) birth certificate and a government issued ID (driver's license works) you do not HAVE to have a passport. If you should happen to need to be flown back to the US (miss the ship, accident, etc.) it would take longer without a passport.

If you do take a passport which I always recommend be sure to just leave it on the ship when you go into port. I believe that there is a higher chance of misplacing it or it being stolen than the benefits of having it with you ashore.

Leave your passport in the safe it will be a bigger problem if you loose it.. if for some reason you miss the cruise ship your passport will be left for you with the port authorities.

You will only need your cruise card and a picture ID to return to the ship.

You should only need your photo ID and cabin key to re-board so you could leave your birth certificate on the ship too.

Our passports go into the safe once we get on the ship.

Whenever we leave and return to the ship -- we have our ship's ID card and our driver's license with us.

Have never taken our birth certificates with us anywhere.

If you use a passport at original embarkation, you do not need a birth certificate at all. Passport would be all you need. Then, at ports leave it in your cabin safe. All you need at ports is your ship card and id such as driver license. And even the id is rarely asked for when re boarding.

Something that is never mentioned on these forums is that even when traveling with a passport, whether you bring it into port or leave on the ship, you should always have the passport number separately contained on your person when going ashore. The passport number is actually the most important piece of information and in the unlikely event that you miss the ship or your passport is lost or stolen having immediate access to the passport number will facilitate getting a new one issued

On a closed loop cruise you do not need your passport. All you need so that you can reenter the US is a government issued photo ID and your official birth certificate.

While visiting ports of call what you need to reboard the ship is your Sign & Sail, SeaPass Card and your photo ID.

Good advice! And always make a photo copy of your passport and keep that with you when going ashore. You will then have all the pertinent information with you in case of an emergency.

Stolen passports, especially American, are a hot commodity on the black market. They can be worth several thousand dollars. You DO NOT want to endure the repercussions of your passport being used for illegal activities.

I'm pretty sure the State Department would be able to find someone quite readily whether they had their number or not. Having the number might save a minute;).

We leave our passports on the ship, but carry a photo copy of them on shore. Makes me feel better that the actual document is safe, but also have a copy on hand just in case.
