Liberty review - Setting the record straight, from our perspective

Backround - We are a married couple in our late 50s. This was our 26th cruise, the 17th on Carnival.

Let's start the trip. This is the Liberty 4 day cruise. We drove to the port from Ohio, arriving at 1030. We dropped our bags off with the porter, did a u-turn up the ramp into the second floor of the parking garage. We walked across the aerial walkway, through the Platinum line to the waiting room. Easiest ever - total time was less than 10 minutes. With that said, we did look at parking off site, which would have saved 20$, but it was well worth the few dollars extra.

The Liberty captain did not allow boarding until 1145. We were on board at 1150. We went straight to our rooms, dropped backpacks off, money in safe, etc. Off to Lido to get a Guy burger. We kept checking to see if our bags were in our room, but they didn't make it until 230. We explored the ship until muster drill.

It was a bit of a cluster, set outside, but not that bad.

We had dinner at the Steakhouse that first night with a free bottle of Merlot. Not the best wine, but certainly drinkable. Hubby had the cowboy steak and I had a spiced ribeye that I thought was scrumptious. Everything here was excellent, as usual.

We skipped the introduction show and went to bed early.

Day 2 to follow.

Day 2. We had breakfast on the Lido deck. I enjoy their omelettes. It was the normal selection.

We staked out our spot at the main pool and we were there until 3 pm. Lots of sunscreen. There were lots of kids but they were just having fun.

We had early dinner at a 10 top table. We had good table mates and good food. Each dish was served at the right temperature (on other recent cruises, I have had some dishes that had to get sent back due to not being hot). Not on this trip. Our servers were Jurarat, Sunny and Supriyady. They were some of the best servers we have had.

Off to the show, Something around the world. Not our favorite. Comedy show we enjoyed. Music in the atrium with Travis. We thought he was quite enjoyable.

Day 3 - Nassau. We have been here several times before, so we decided to do a self guided walking tour. Pre trip we downloaded a Nassau walking app. The app was $4.99. It was gps driven and we followed it to all the points of interest. It took about 2 hours. We spent a few minutes at the straw market. Lots of junk, but we did buy another beach bag because we had forgotten ours. We walked over to Junkanoo Beach and had a few beers and got a recommendation to go to The Fish Fry, a local restaurant. On the way we had a side tour of Fort Charlotte. We had conch salad and fritters and some Sands beer. It was very good and reasonably priced. Back to the ship.

The one low point of our trip was there was not much to do this evening. No comedy and the typical love and marriage show. We did listen to music and went to bed early. Tomorrow is another day.

Day 4 to follow.

Day 4 - Freeport. Breakfast in the dining room with our free Bloody Mary's. We tried to go to the beach, but the wind and rain picked up so we returned to the ship. We headed to the aft pool which they had closed the roof so it was comfortable. We spent the rest of the day talking with some nice people and enjoying our beverages.

We went to dinner and then to the rock n roll show, which we had seen before, but thoroughly enjoyed. Do not miss it if you can help it.

Off to the comedy club, another funny show. Then dancing in the casino bar to the tunes of a band that did lots of Motown. Danced until midnight and crashed.

Day 5. Up at 630 and did our packing. We had breakfast in the dining room. Came back to the room, got our bags and walked off about 830. We were in line a few minutes but we were soon in the car and on the highway with little traffic.

Summary - after reading such awful reviews of late, we were a little apprehensive about this trip, as it was only our second short cruise. Rest assured, this ship is beautiful and well maintained. The crew was always friendly and did a great job. This was their new cruise director's maiden voyage on the Liberty. His name is Donkey and he was funny and quite approachable.

We are believers that a cruise is what you make of it. There are always a few things that go wrong, a hot tub down, pool had to be drained due to a sick child, etc. this did not affect our enjoyment of this trip (don't sweat the small stuff). We wouldn't hesitate to sail on her again.

We are on the road for the next 9 hours, any questions, ask away.

Thanks for your comments. I enjoyed my January 22nd (4 day) cruise on Carnival Liberty as well. Diamonds Steakhouse was a highlight of the trip as well as the Towel Animal Theater. Dining in the MDR: one good dinner, one OK dinner, one not so good (Caribbean Pepper Steak entree). Agree, the service was friendly and efficient. Never made it to a comedy show although one of the two who briefly performed during the Show on the first night I thought was funny; the other one, not so much.
