Rare babs135 Posted April 28, 2017 #1 Share Posted April 28, 2017 Do we need to take precautions against malaria when we do a full transit next January?
CruiserBruce Posted April 28, 2017 #2 Share Posted April 28, 2017 No. Your only concern is if you are going off the ship and deep in the jungle. We have been through the Canal 3 times, and a 4th booked for October. No worries.
Rare babs135 Posted April 28, 2017 Author #3 Share Posted April 28, 2017 Thank you for your quick reply. Don't want to take any more medication than I have to!!!
BillB48 Posted April 28, 2017 #4 Share Posted April 28, 2017 I'll second Cruiser Bruce's motion:D. Even if you were to off the beaten track a little you really would not require meds, just long sleeves and perhaps repellant. Another thing in your favor is January in the Dry Season at the tropical stops on your cruise. Dry Season is not the skeeter's favorite time of the year. Rare Turtles06 Posted April 28, 2017 #5 Share Posted April 28, 2017 We did a full transit this past January. We put on insect repellent (picardin, but Deet is another alternative) in most of the ports. Never saw a mosquito. Pre-cruise, we had a travel doctor tell us that there was a little piece of Nicaragua that we were visiting where malaria was supposedly a risk, but since our port call was during the day, and malaria prophylaxis has its own potential problems, we opted just for the repellent. As I said, we never saw a mosquito. Still, probably best to ask your own doctor or travel clinic for medical advice. :D Have a great trip!
