Crew conditions

I was the one who originally started the thread.We all have something to gain by knowing the crew conditions.You are entitled to live in ignorance if you wish.It is such ignorance that allows exploitation of workers in the Far East working in the clothing industry in bad conditions for a pittance

 

I thought this forum was about ships not Primark,

I do not live in ignorance, as you put it. But have you ever thought why there is very little or no information about crew wages and their receipt of incentives and money received from guests in the cruise industry. Most Crew have access to forums and could easy explain the wages/tipping system if they wanted us the passenger to know. If we knew the full extent than guests may not be so generous with workers in the cruise industry.

I would imagine that there are widespread rules against posting publicly about the job or shipboard life without pre-clearance from the line. Even anonymous posts can usually be tracked by people in the know about the content discussed.

What is the relevance?

Is there a suggestion that the crew are being exploited?

In that case, complaining on a blog is pretty lame and if one thinks the employees are being exploited, one shouldn't patronize that particular business.

I started the thread by saying I was just interested and there was no ulteria motive. It is a great pity that a simple thread should not be allowed to appear without becoming politicised.

I am happy to close the thread

Fair enough.

But I would say it became politicized when someone upstream mentioned living in ignorance and the exploitation of workers in the far East.

I'll have to scroll up to find out where that was...

I was invited to the Pig a time or two on QE2. In the "good ole days" they most definitely did not have a 2 drink limit........:cool:

Years ago on the QE2 my friend and I shared an outside inside cabin right at the bow - think it was below the water line. Our neighbours were a couple of young lads who produced the daily newspaper. We were invited to an officer crew party - there was a lot of alcohol around as I recall. I understand now that after the Costa Concordia tragedy that the ship is dry for staff responsible for the safety of the vessel.

I am sorry if anyone took offense to my recollection of Olden Days drinking. I too have lived and worked under the same alcohol controls and testing as Chengkp. Times have certainly changed from the Love Boat days when good old Capt. Stubing appeared to spend his entire day in the restaurant or the lounges.

 

Times certainly have changed.

 

Having served 30 years in the Royal Navy the alcoholic consumption at sea is nowhere near the levels now that I experienced all those years ago.

 

And that's not including the days when I drew a tot. :(:(:(

They can always leave.

But most enjoy all the benefits it brings them.

 

I do not take a Holiday Thinking of the Staff, the same way I am sure they do not thing about me.(other than if I am going to tip them)

 

What is is about cruising that passengers want to know all about the people thats serve them.

 

Some folk have broader interests Pennbank and from your earlier comment you certainly appeared to be knowledgeable on staff matters.

 

I've never been averse to socialising with the staff...

How ghastly. Why would one want to socialize with the help? Where does it end? Dine with the driver/ captain?

Not a bad place to start, dining with the driver that is...
