Captains cocktail party

how do you dress for the Captain's cocktail party, I have no idea whether to go resort casual or dress up a little.

I wear whatever I'm wearing for dinner. On HAL and Princess, this is usually on a formal night so I wear my formal outfit.

Most are on formal nights, so folks will be quite dressed up....it's really whatever dinner's dress code might be.

It all depends on when and what time of day the cocktail party is held. On my last cruise, it was in the afternoon, so it was resort casual. I've also been on cruises where it's held on the formal night, and I've worn what I had on for dinner. Looking at the recent past dailies of my ship's sailings has given me an idea of when the cocktail parties are held on my upcoming cruise. Check the board for your cruise line to see if anyone has posted their dailies for your ship.

IME it has been held on formal night between the dinner seatings. (Early seating guests go right after dinner and late right before; ATD work around it.) Whatever the case, you will not need an extra outfit - just wear whatever you wear for dinner.
