Insight into switching cruises on same cruise line (RCCL)

We are currently booked on RCCL Navigator of the Seas out of Galveston for late May 2014. I just noticed the rates for Oasis of the Seas out of FLL are dropping much lower now. What is involved if we wanted to switch to the Oasis cruise? Do they just subtract the difference in rates? Is it based upon original rate we paid? Are there any "change fees" similar to what the airlines charge? We've never done this before, but now Oasis is more affordable and the drive is about 5 hrs less to get to FLL. We got a great deal on Balcony cabins on NOTS...but willing to trade to an inside on Oasis to try her out!! :)

If your cruise is in May 2104 then you are already past final payment date. There will be cancellation fees imposed with cancelling your current cruise as a result. RCI will not just transfer payment from one to the other - the first one would be cancelled with the fees assessed and then you would book the new cruise.

The new cruise would be booked at the current rates for that cruise and if that cruise is past final payment date, then the full payment would be due at time of booking. Whatever fees charged for the first cruise cancellation would not be recovered and you would have to rationalize that cost with the cost of the new cruise to see if it is worth doing.

If you bought cancellation insurance "for any reason" you can cancel the old cruise, and get the new one.

Without insurance, you are past the final payment date, the cruise line will not "transfer" your reservation.

We did not get the "cancel for any reason" policy.

But your travel insurance would not cover you for the second cruise. You would have to buy a new policy

Shoot, I think I would call RCI and ask (or have your travel agent call them). Maybe you will get lucky. Worst that will happen is RCI will say no and you will be on the original cruise.
