Has anyone been on the photography tour?

I'm trying to find a good photography tour while we are in Barbados. I'm curious about the InFocus Photography Tour as well as others that may exist. How was it? Where did they take you? Was it better than what you could do on your own?

I did this tour on October 31st. There were only five of us on the tour that day. Mr. Harrington stated that the norm is about 30.

The only downfall on this tour was one of the people with us booked another tour that was overlap so we had to cut this one short.

But otherwise the tour is a great way not only to see part of the island, but to get great photo tips. At each stop we made, not only was the local history provided but also tips and hints to take a better photo.

You had people like me with basic digtal camera to those who had taken photo class and still took Mr. Harrington advice.

I normally don't do ship tours but was rather please with this tour.

Out of curiousity, what scenic places does this photography tour visit?

We first stop at a plantation and then a wonderful lookout. We then stop in a small parish for photos and we then had stops along the northern part of Barbados. These stops were both inland and oceanside.

There were more stops schedule (including to a rum shop) but due to someone overlapping the tours, we missed out on the last.

You also get a nice tour of the northern part of the island and it was worth the cost.

We did Ronnie Harrington's excursion last month on our way back from the Amazon.

He offers a very good and diverse excursion providing a broad variety of photographic opportunities. In addition he provides good narration and "stories" about the island and its people.

My wife got some incredible pictures at the stops we made...both inland and on the coast. I would have got better pictures if I had remembered to put the battery back in my camera instead of leaving it in the charger on the ship!!!

Lot's of stops and photo ops...as well as a bus with large window that opened so yu can get shots from the bus. Really enjoyed the stop at the rum shop where I got to sit an chat with the some of the local boys while my wife wandered off to take pictures.

Worth the money.

I tried to Google this tour and found only the links from some cruise lines. Could this tour be boocked independently and how to find it on the Web?

Thank you in advance,

Ilya

When we were on our tour, someone asked Mr. Harrington this question. Right now he's doing the photo tours only with the cruiselines. But he also have photo classes and workshops from time to time

Ummm...guys....if I'm not mistaken, this guy is Ronnie Carrington -not Harrington.

I went to school with the guy, and yes, he's a successful local photographer, a tall black guy.

Just thought you'd appreciate the name correction if you ever went Google-ing him or anything.

Carrington -not Harrington, okay?

Thanks for the comments and the recommendation. We had planned on taking this tour for the very reasons you found to be worthwhile - real local shooting ops, advise on shooting techniques and local lore.

I sent an email to Ronnie the other day asking what specific equipment we should bring along for that day (we tend to bring all our gear on a cruise) and am waiting for his response.

We had taken a photo tour on St. Thomas and found it to be just OK. Yes, we did go to some great spots, but the experience of the tour person was not as good as I would have wanted.

Would you mind posting his response as I would be interested. I'm hoping to be able to sign up for this excursion when I sail their next April.

Does anybody have his web site? The tour is not offered on our Victory cruise so I am hoping we can book it ourselves. Thanks!

We enjoyed ourselves on this tour in January. It's the only tour I have ever done through a cruise line and found it to be worth the money. You will really only get the most basic photography tips but you will see some interesting locations and you will learn quite a bit about Barbados history and it's culture.

Here's Ronnie and my favorite photo from that tour.

Here is what Ronnie wrote back to us in reference to what type of equipment we should bring from our collection of lenses and camera bodies.

A focal length range of 18-200 would be adequate for this tour. We

> go through villages inland and by the seaside and you do get a

> short walk on a beach. Specialist lenses like the 400 may not find

> much of an application on this tour.

>

> I hope this help and I look forward to seeing you and your wife in

> the new year.

Hope this helps you as it did us. From what I have learned it is a most educational tour from a photography and cultural viewpoint.

A question for those that may have taken this tour and that is did they offer this tour as one of the first tours in the morning? Hopefully there is someone that took this on a Princess voyage and even more importantly was this a morning tour.

We only use point and shoot cameras so this might be way out of our range. I would like to get some tips about lighting, posing, etc but maybe we should look elsewhere for that?

There were about 20 on our excursion with Ronnie and the majority were using point and shoots so don't let that stop you. It's a nice tour and Ronnie is a very nice gentleman who will give you some basic tips that you will use in the future. You might get some lighting tips but probably not much help with posing . You will definitely learn some interesting things about Barbados. My wife went with me on this tour and did not take one photo but still enjoyed herself

I took this tour in January while on the Caribbean Princess. It is a morning tour, but if you are wondering because you want to take advantage of the early light,it's not that early. I think we left at 9:00 am and probably did not take our first photo for another 20 minutes. Because of the time of day it was not an ideal tour for landscape shots except for when we were near the ocean. I have found that shots of the Caribbean waters are actually better in the later morning because the high sun brings out the blues in the water.

Getting the best light is always a problem being on a ship that doesn't dock until after 7 in the morning and not being able to disembark until after 8. By the time you get to the areas you want to shoot, the sun is getting too high. But, we will make do and grab whatever we can.

Nice shots in your gallery by the way. Tortola is one of our favorite places as well. Lots of local color and unique ops.

If you are not on a cruise line that offers this tour, and Ronnie Carrington is available the day that you are in port, he will give a tour for 1-30 people.

This is what Ronnie quoted as of Dec 2, 2010:

  • 21-30 persons - US$75 per person
  • 11-20 persons - $95 per person
  • 5-10 persons - $120 per person
  • Less than 5 - $150 per person

Note that you, not Ronnie, are responsible for putting together the tour group.

We did this tour earlier this month and it was one of the best tours we have been on - ever! Ronnie is great with his advice and the sites he took us to.

It's too bad that he looks a lot older than his mom. If you go on this tour you will see what I mean. If you don't go on this tour you will miss something special.
