Hotel suggestions

We will be doing an Asia Cruise next Christmas from Hong Kong to Singapore

We are looking for any hotel recommendations for a 5 night pre cruise stay in Hong Kong.

Overnight Stay in Hanoi

New Years eve stay in Bangkok

A little background - we are a family of 7 - myself and my wife and 2 daughters, my mother and my mother and father in law.

We would probably book 3 rooms and would like to be close to the action ( night markets, transit, etc)

We have a lot of Hilton points to use so that would be the preferred hotel but we are certainly willing to stay elsewhere so all suggestions are appreciated.

thanks in advance

Hong Kong

IMHO Tsim Sha Tsui, the peninsula of Kowloon on the mainland side of the harbour is the best part of town to be.

Everything on your doorstep, the terminal for the Star Ferries (by far the best way to cross to harbour), the Avenue of Stars, Nathan Road shopping, Temple St nightmarket mebbe a 15 - 20 min walk, etc. Also the old cruise terminal, though most ships now berth at the new cruise port on the former Kai Tak airport which is a short MTR ride away.

Best value hotel there by far is the Salisbury, on Salisbury Road.

Forget the "YMCA" tag, that's just the ownership, it's a regular 3 - 4 star hotel, and very good.

It has harbour view rooms (11th storey upwards because the harbourside Space Centre across the road blocks the view for lower floors).

It also has family rooms (most hotels don't) but be aware that not all hotel consolidation websites quote for family rooms.

Bangkok

Best location by far is along the river. We stayed at Sheraton Royal Orchid, right by River City pier - used by ferries, river & canal (klongs) excursions, long-tail boats etc.

All rooms have river views, very very interesting, always lots of river traffic. Cheaper rooms (better make that "least expensive rooms";)) are small but perfectly OK for an overnite.

Second time in Bangkok we stayed at a cheap little hotel midway between the river & Patpong. Lots of big hotels there too. Very acceptable hotel (sorry don't recall the name) & perfectly OK location for the price.

Hanoi

We decided against the long haul (3.5 hrs+ each way) from Halong Bay to Hanoi & instead fixed up a group hire of a junk for 6 hours - it's surreal in the mist amongst the limestone karsts (islets) of Halong Bay, like being on another planet.

If you go to Hanoi do fix up your transport in advance, and with a well-recommended operator.

thanks so much.

For Hanoi we plan on overnighting there and meeting back up with the ship in Da Nang either by flying there or taking the night train since we only do a one day stop at Ha Long

If you've not already done so, do check whether for an internal flight, perhaps even by train & even for an overnite hotel, you need to fix up an appropriate Vietnam tourist visa - the one issued by the ship isn't a regular tourist visa, it's only good for arriving & departing on the ship.

One reason we chose not to do something similar ourselves.

Another reason was the possibility, however remote, that the ship didn't make it to the next port (in your case, Da Nang) because of weather, mechanical issues or whatever. If that had happened to us, the next port of call was Hong Kong, so you can imagine the grief & expense.

Apologies if you're already sorted on these things & I'm teaching grannie to suck eggs ;)

pieshops, another hotel that I would highly recommend that you check out is the Marco Polo Honking Hotel. I like this hotel and highly recommend it. It is a very short distance from the cruise ship terminal. You have easy access to transportation such as the Ferry's which I find to be fun and easy to use.

I would also read reviews on Trip Advisor.

You also might need the ships permission to do this.

Hotel Hanoi Hilton Opera is OK -- a little tired and needs renovation since it first opened in 1999.

Best Hotel in Hanoi is the Sofitel Legend Metropol.

Both are near the Opera House in the old French Quarter.

We just booked the Eaton Family room for the 5 of us for 4 nights pre cruise next December, great price and love the location. Now we just have to wait a year

Also booked the Hilton Opera house in Hanoi.

Now we only have to book our Hotel in Bangkok and Singapore when reservation open up for our date in a few days.

  • 5 months later...

We stayed at the Ariyasomvilla Boutique hotel in Bangkok, and really enjoyed our stay. It was a charming hotel, with an excellent staff, and the grounds full of vegetation made this a little paradise to return to after a long day of touring the different parts of the city. Breakfast was included in our rate. We would definitely return to this hotel.

Since it has been a little while since your post, you may have already booked your hotels. Since we are returning to Asia for a cruise later this year, we are curious to know what you booked. Thanks.

You might want to consider in Singapore the Royal Plaza on Scott's Road...loved this hotel and the location was amazing.

Yikes.....didn't notice how old this post was.
