Short tour of Rome from ship

We are on the Norwegian Spirit in January and stop in Civitavecchia only from 8 am to 17.00.

Most tours of Rome I have seen take at least 9 - 9.1/2 hours so are not suitable.

Can anyone recommend a shorter tour that picks you up at the port and maybe just gives a taster of Rome rather than going in all the sights?

This would be for "Seniors" so not too strenuous!

Thanks

If you are looking for a private driver to take you around the sites, then these are generally very flexible. You work with the agency to put together the program you want in the time you have. The reputable groups (the ones mentioned over and over again here) will have a very good idea of what you can accomplish in the amount of time you have. Be sure to tell them what level of activity you are comfortable with.

Keep in mind that these services generally do NOT include a guide unless you opt to pay for one separately for specific portions of your itinerary, such as at the Vatican museum.

These tours are relatively expensive for a small number of people (e.g., for a couple) so many people try to recruit others to join via their roll call in order to reduce the cost per person. You may or may not be interested in trying that.

If you're looking for a large group tour that picks up passengers at the port, there really isn't anything like that in Civitavecchia. There are, however, one or two transport services that will get you to Rome and then bring you back, but you're on your own once there. You also may have less time than with a private tour.

We recently returned from a day in Rome via Carnival Vista. Because this was our 2nd visit via a cruise, we wanted to do something different. Last time we toured with Driver Guide Service and did the typical things...Vatican tour, Fountain, etc. We ended up with DGS previously as RIL was full. However, someone on this board recommended DGS. After deciding we wanted a golf cart tour as they could be as short as 3 hours up to 6, we decided to check to see if they offered. Sure enough they did and we loved every minute of it! We took a pictures of landmarks but we also had some specific things in mind which were cool to do via golf cart as we were able to go places cars could not.

It should be noted that their tour does not include transportation from the port. However, there were many options available. The ship offered a bus and a train. But there were also shared and private shuttles that you could book from a variety of companies including Viator.com.

Golf carts can be bumpy on the stone streets but it is definitely doable for seniors.

We're seniors too and maybe looking for the same thing. We haven't decided yet, but considering Civitatours Panoramic Tours: http://www.civitatours.com/en/tour-panoramico.html

Please post what you decide to do. We did find a good one from Piraeus for Athens. :)

Actually, most tours will know when your ship is in port and make the time to suit. You can also just ask for a shorter duration and barter a bit. I know Joe Bananas Limos or italytoursharing.com is pretty flexible as I have used them many times and am using them again next year. Try to email the company and ask. Joe Banana email is info@joebananalimos.net

We have decided to go with this company as, although there is plenty of walking, the tour looks interesting and there appears to be both a guide & time on your own.

What transport services from the port to Rome, would be good for DIYers. I will be traveling with a relatively large group that includes a few seniors so I'd like to keep their legs fresh until we get to Rome.

Thanks!:D

On our two Rome calls we faced the same delimma. Remember, Civicavecia is an hour from Rome (with the blessing of the traffic gods). If you do a half day, all you get is a drive by at best. We bit the bullet and did two full day tours and took the next day off. Our full day tours had a good lunch break. Tough choice. Good luck.
