Jacqueline Posted August 8, 2017 #1 Share Posted August 8, 2017 I don't mean to infer that I need a lot of programming to make me happy! Not the case. I did spend nearly 16 days at sea on the QM2 back to back transatlantic and mostly walked a few miles a day on the promenade deck, went to the gym, the spa, an a lecture or two. And three meals a day in the grills dining room took up a several hours! Never went to an evening show, I also wonder how they provision... not sure that they can pick up fresh food along the way. I am asking because our cruise will be 19 days to Antartica and Georgia with five sea days at the end, as this is also a repositioning cruise. As most of you know, I will be on the Hanseatic.. English Voyager Posted August 8, 2017 #2 Share Posted August 8, 2017 The commentary to the following video is in German, but it shows the provisioning of the Hanseatic in Ushuaia and the picking up of fresh produce in the Falkland Islands. The producer says he has had a contract with Hapag-Lloyd for 20 years.
Jacqueline Posted August 8, 2017 Author #3 Share Posted August 8, 2017 It's incredible that you were able to find this! Thanks. This itinerary is unusual as it goes to South Georgia, but not the Falklands. Maybe because we end up in Rio? Thanks very much for the video! Floridiana Posted August 8, 2017 #4 Share Posted August 8, 2017 Thanks for posting the video! Small passenger ships with their meandering itineraries throughout Asia and Australia replenish provisions on the way. Ponant picked up fish and fruit in Hong Kong. Europa 2 bought wine, berries and paper products in New Zealand and Australia. There are ship chandlers whose business is providing ships, but Europa 2's chef sommelier went to the wineries in person. Both ships had a stock of provisions from their home country such as cheese, butter, sugar, flour. They were flown into certain ports. I am not surprised that H-L uses trusted providers in South America.
English Voyager Posted August 8, 2017 #5 Share Posted August 8, 2017 The following, German language, video confirms that every 4 weeks 140 -160 tonnes of produce are shipped out from Germany to the Europa2. It also shows the Hotel Manager, and the Head Chef shopping in a local market in Ho Chi Minh City.
IndiTravler Posted August 25, 2017 #6 Share Posted August 25, 2017 And sometimes you just flat run out of a particular item. One trip it was fresh limes, my most recent trip it was fresh asparagus.
zqvol Posted August 25, 2017 #7 Share Posted August 25, 2017 If you are looking for many sea days on a small luxury ship, take a look at Sea Dream's crossings.
Travelcat2 Posted August 25, 2017 #8 Share Posted August 25, 2017 Or any ships crossing for that matter. They all have lots of sea days.
