Blow to CCL: Galveston pilot hearings set

A Galveston-Texas City pilot testified at a rate hearing for Lake Charles, La., pilots that average reported income for 2007 was $335,000.

 

But pilots argue that critics never deduct health, life and disability insurance and taxes from the figure.

I'm sorry, I'll trade places with them. My employer deducts those things from my check as well:rolleyes:

That's not a blow. That's just how union negotiations roll.

Makes me wonder how much ship's captains make. Even with taxes and benefits that is not a bad salary.

Considering the nepotism that is rampant among the pilots, I would think they would share a family insurance plan.

I'm not sure it's as serious of a blow to CCL (or RCCL for that matter) as it is to Galveston. Galveston needs the cruise lines a lot more than the cruise lines need Galveston (or its harbor pilots).

Pilots are important and deserve a good salary but what they are paid is outrageous.

Pretty much a pilot anywhere! I've seen figures of $2000.US for every time any ship enters or leaves a harbor. Some places they might make half or a third of what Galveston realizes, but that's maybe a dozen times the local average pay.

Good luck ever trying to get a harbor pilots job, (I know you are kidding) but I think when a pilot passes away it is put in his will who his job is left to. :D

The above posters are correct about getting a job as a pilot. I know the harbor pilots at the Port of Tampa make a lot of money as well. At times, they absolutely earn it though, IMO.

Those poor, poor pilots! They only make $335,000 a year and they haven't had a raise since '07!

Ever seen one of those pilots board a ship while it's underway? Their insurance must be outrageous.
