Carnival AZIPOD Posted December 12, 2008 #1 Share Posted December 12, 2008 Hi everyone! I just went on my 1st cruise last week --- it was AMAZING. Since I wasn't able to visit the Bridge (or the Pilot House!), I'm wondering if anyone can share with me how the Bridge looks like on a cruise ship. Thanks!!! websailor Posted December 12, 2008 #2 Share Posted December 12, 2008 This is on a RCCL Voyager class ship - they have a deck with a glass area that you can look down at the bridge.
hkolln Posted December 12, 2008 #3 Share Posted December 12, 2008 I have some brigde pics of the Carnival Sensation. We sailed on her in 1999 when they actually allowed us to tour the bridge. The pics are here: http://helenanddave.net/sensationship.htm
Aplmac Posted December 12, 2008 #4 Share Posted December 12, 2008 This is on a RCCL Voyager class ship - they have a deck with a glass area that you can look down at the bridge. That's fairly hi-tech 'cockpit' stuff there..! The bridge on lowly (17 yr.old) Ocean Village Two is a bit more mundane and down-to-earth... Yes, they still use charts! The token helm, rarely used these days..

websailor Posted December 12, 2008 #6 Share Posted December 12, 2008 The Voyager class doesn't even have a steering wheel! They use the joystick on the center console! Most kids nowadays could probably steer that huge ship. But they still use charts too - they had them out on a plotting table. Way back in 1990 we had a bridge tour of the Dawn Princess - I think it was about 32,000 tons, so a very small ship compared to today. I like this picture - but we all wondered how that Italian sailor at the steering wheel could see over the steering console. Maybe the wood platform helped! Even my wife was six inches taller than he was!
