  1. We did the Rhine with Viking Amsterdam to Basel in late August of 2016. It was HOT!

I should mention that I check a bag, and I don’t wear capris. Personal preference. I also don’t do laundry on vacation with the exception of rinsing out a bra now and then, and my compression socks. I always take more than enough underwear. I wear the micro fiber bikinis from Jockey. I can fit a month’s worth in a zip lock bag. [emoji12]

I take black bottoms. Black doesn’t show dirt like lighter colors and it goes with everything. I wore stretchy dark denim leggings on the plane, so I would have them, because I wouldn’t have to pack them and because they were comfortable.

I had black Bermuda length shorts. I wore them most everywhere, including churches with no issues. Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland aren’t as conservative as some other countries in that regard. It largely depends on where you are going. There were many other people wearing shorts, too. Did I mention it was HOT [emoji16]

I also had black knit pants, and a black knit knee length skirt (Toad &Co) which I brought in case I needed it for the Cathedral in Cologne. We were there on Sunday. I actually got a lot of wear out of it because it was much cooler than the shorts.

For tops, I brought 5 or maybe 6 LL Bean tee shirts in solid colors. I’d wear one for dinner with a scarf or dressy necklace, then again for daytime excursions. Double duty. Worked out well.

I had Taos Trophy sandals which I loved. They were comfy and looked nice. I wore them to dinner. I also had a pair of New Balance sneakers for more challenging walks.

I packed a lightweight down jacket that folds into its own pocket, and a raincoat. We did Mt Pilatus in Lucerne and I thought I’d need it, but I didn’t. I sleep in long tee shirts in a light weight.

And I roll - it’s how I roll [emoji13]. I have it down to a science. I should make a video. I only use a medium packing cube to separate clothes for our hotel stays so it’s on top and I don’t have to dig.

And that’s my tale. It worked well. I wore everything I brought at least twice. I plan to do the same for our Grand European. It’s in mid September, so I’m not taking the shorts. I got another Toad & Co skirt and I’ll wear those if it’s hot.

I tried rolling, but it seems wrinkled more. Any tips pls?

  2. I try to roll but I'm not great at it. I have now discovered how much I love packing cubes! Even if I don't use the compression ones, I love how organized I keep my suitcase. It's also so easy to unpack. Another thing I always take now...a collapsible clothing hamper....fits right in the corner or in the closet and makes me feel like i'm organized! I love , and use, packing cubes too! But I am not traveling with a carry on only ;)

  3.

So, when we found the Vancouver to San Diego itinerary, with stops in Seattle, Astoria, San Francisco, Monterey and Santa Barbara - it sounded wonderful (especially with the included alcohol package, $300 OBC to pay for specialty dining, internet with two log-ins and laundry twice during our cruise).

This sounds like a Celebrity cruise [emoji4]

  4. Here's what my husband and I brought for 12 days in France (River cruise + 4 nights on our own), including some fancy dinners off-ship. We both traveled with only a carry-on (Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45) and a personal item. We had a few thing laundered on-board during the first seven days using the "all you can fit in the bag" deal on Emerald.

    France River Cruise Packing List

Fantastic list and very handy format! Thank you [emoji120] ( I wish we were going on a river cruise) :)

Your list is quite comprehensive, how heavy was your carry on? ( I thought usual weight limit is 7-10 kg)

  5. So if I understand you correctly you are saying that the crews base pay varies based on the number of non-Australians on board, right?

Which means our tips make up the difference to what the base pay would be if 100% Australians were on board?

That does not sound right I am afraid. Still think it depends on the employment legislation of a country where the employer company has a seat.

  6. I was under the impression the crew of the Sea Princess was employed by Princess Australia.

    Right? Wrong?

Sorry, don’t know - I never thought/realised they might be employing through different entities

  7. In general, I would agree with you but I understand the crew on the Australian based Princess ships are paid a decent wage, unlike the other ships where the crew is paid very poorly.

That most likely depends who they are employed by. If the employer is not an Australian company, the location of the ship is irrelevant

  8. In all honesty, it is up to you. Personally I’d leave them, now I detest the tipping culture, but am happy to leave them on when they are applicable and tip a few people a bit extra perhaps.

In the cruise line most of folks literally relying on them, similarly to wait staff in the US. That’s why I would never remove them, despite not having a tipping culture in NZ, or personally not liking it [emoji56]

  9. There’s always that one that thinks the worse in people. Sorry if I torqued anyone off, that was not my intention.

For what it is worth - I think this is a very interesting topic. The more we know, the better I say! Before I’ve started reading CC I did not even think that there are so many pricing options, TAs, yo-yo prices, how far in advance etc,etc etc. What’s the harm in telling? The majority of folks here are only screen names, not real people. Why such secrecy about prices , tastes, gratuities - it’s only an incognito’s view, no more :)

  10. If you are referring to your Captains Club account we had the same issue recently and we were told when we called that an email address was now what was needed instead of a user name. (I realize with many that is one in the same but it was not with me). Once reset with that you may also have to update your password - I did.

I realize you are not in the US but there should be an international number you can call, and I would suggest starting by calling Celebrity and talking with them.

    Thank you, it worked!

  11. For a couple of days now I am unable to log in - get a message that the request cannot be processed at this time and to try again later.

Has anybody else experienced this? Is there a website support to contact re this? Thanks in advance

  12. Australians and Kiwis are my favorite groups to travel with and are lots of fun, but I don't think I've ever been spared their lecture on America's tipping practice. After hearing "If Americans would just pay everyone a living wage, they wouldn't have to tip," I have no problem with not tipping when I'm in their country.

Hah? Lecturing? More likely we just admit we don’t understand the culture of tipping, we struggle to when/how much/how. It is much easier not feeling obliged to tip, and only tip when you really want to show your appreciation. If tipping is almost compulsory, it should be included in the price, and reflected in staff’s salaries

  13. In 22 cruises on X the 1 category upgrade has never been considered a perk and has not stopped us from getting the perks that are offered for the cruise. If anyone tells you the 1 category upgrade disqualifies you from receiving booking perks they don’t know what they are talking about.

What level of CC one needs to be in order to be eligible for this upgrade?
