The Fleet Report and Daily for Tuesday October 29th, 2024
doobieb replied to richwmn's topic in Holland America Line
Happy Tuesday to all my friends on the Daily. I am sending everyone a warm, gentle hug of support. Special thoughts for @rafinmd, @kazu, and @StLouisCruisers. We need you all healthy to keep us smiling, informed, and feeling like we have extended family wherever you are. Did anyone else feel the pain of @kazu’s move right along with her? And Roy ‘s recent struggles, which he is attacking just like we thought he would? And just leave it to @StLouisCruisers to put a positive spin on the meaning of hermit. That positive spirit comes through in all her cares, prayers and sharing, doesn’t it? Thanks to all the Dailyites for sharing every day. It sure makes my day better to be a little part of this group..- 86 replies

Thank you @grapau27 for the bon voyage! We board the Oosterdam about noon today for 10 days up the coast of Croatia. . It is a hot and sunny day here in Athens, with a high predicted of 90. I think today will be the last touch of summer looking at the weather ahead. Cooler days will be welcomed! While we were flying over, Hurricane Helene was moving through georgia. Just before landing, a fellow passenger got word that her home in Tampa had a direct hit and was destroyed. Then it caught fire. I cannot imagine how one copes with that news anytime, but especially at the start of a vacation. Now I am reading about all the failed dams and damage in Tennessee and N.C. Prayers to all. Hot chicken salad was the go to dish for my mom’s bridge club so I was practically raised on it. Along with her homemade yeast rolls. I carry on the tradition. It is so good to get the updates on Roy. @StLouisCruisers, it seems that any newly married couple who experience the travel challenges your niece is dealing with is sure to withstand the challenges of a long and happy marriage! What stories they will have in the years to come! My favorite travel stories are always the ones that did not go as planned, but somehow became champion survival stories! Debbie

I see. I remember my grandfather spending the fall walking around his yard, local parks and school yards, gathering pecans with his picker upper. He was proud of his haul and used to use the Farmers Almanac to predict crops and weather. He was a gem, born in 1898. He would be upset to learn that today we pay for a bottle of water. And that pecans are $13 a pound! Thanks for clearing up the misconception I had about nut picker things. Who knew you can get them at Home Depot.

So glad to read Amanda’s update on Roy. It is very promising. And Amanda and Keith must be a couple of those angels we know of to have Roy’s care on their plates, minds and hearts. Lucky family. Debbie

Thank you, Sandi, @StLouisCruisers for today’s Daily details. Stay safe. Hope you are not in the path of this latest storm, although it seems to be making its way right up the middle of Georgia. So glad to hear promising news about Roy and @Vict0riann’s Pat. Prayers for all awaiting tests and test results. The clock ticks so slowly when you are in that wait and see time warp zone. @kazu so glad to know you are movd and nostly settled. What an emotional roller coaster! You deserve a break today, and tomorrow, and the next……..🥰 Packing on the agenda today. We are going to fly through ATL to check on the weather on our way tomorrow. Seems to still be a hot summer in Greece.😎 Our dogsitter came by yesterday for a quick walk through. I think Max the dog told us to stay away as long as we want. He was beyond thrilled to see her. Our neighbors all know her, so she will enjoy the visiting and walking in this area.

Love todays quote, might like the Riesling, and love math riddles. My DSIL never shows up for a family dinner without some brain teaser which we all debate over the meal. He has set the bar quite high for mental challenges. All the 3 of the DGS now moan at this. 🥰 Not been to today’s port but loved the pictures @StLouisCruisersposted. Norway is better than Disneyworld! And it does have a magical feel tom it as well as all that gorgeous scenery. This time last year were packing for a Cruise up the coast of Norway on a Hurtigruten ship, a cross between a large ferry and a cruise ship. It was our second time there and we were ready to go back as soon as we got home. This picture, altho not from today’s port, was typical of the scenery in Norway.

Thank you for this report. We board next Sunday-so it was good to read your report. We like the size of the Oosterdam, and appreciate NOT having 3000+ fellow cruisers on board! It is impressive how HAL maintains all the ships.

@luvteaching Thank you for sharing the burial ar sea ceremony. It sounds like it was just perfect. We all should be so lucky. @rafinmd Good to see you posting, even if the updates are not the best news. Your spirit comes through! I was thinking today that thanks to you, I know about the Daily.. And as a matter of fact, circulating on a neighborhood site it was reported that a CHICKEN was seen at the local middle school 2 blocks away (so technically not on our street). Great excitement around here!

When we say “nothing much happened here this weekend….” we mean it. When @durangoscots says it, a bear knocks down a fence nearby and then a passel of people show up to gather apples, that’s more than nothing! And just what is a gleamer? Our neighbors would probably all be out on the sidewalk if a chicken was in the area! But a bear………yikes! Debbie

As @kochleffel sad, “A friend who was a hospice nurse practitioner says that most families don't know how many ways hospice services can help and don't call as early as they might.” i agree. Without my niece, who is a Hospice pediatrician, I doubt we would have sought out that support for my mom who moved in with us just as covid was shutting down senior living facilities across the country. I was much too afraid of sending the wrong message as we tried to navigate daily care in the midst of the quarantine. . Many of my friends have traveled this same path and never knew the support Hospice can provide. Our Hospice nurses told me that local doctors do not usually suggest this to patients simply because they do not want to send business away. My mom’s doctor was a good example- he was angry when we told him we were choosing Hospice care. It was the right choice for us at the right time. I want to be an advocate for investigating Hospice care. Debbie

@mamaofami What a hard decision you have made about Hospice, and how wonderful in many ways. I bet everyone on The Daily who has had the support of Hospice in their family is feeling a sense of goodness for you. I know that I am. I expect that you now have enhanced spiritual, emotional, and medical support for Sam. And for yourself. God bless you both. Debbie

Happy Saturday! After two days of waiting for the hurricane effects here in north Alabama, we are finally getting some rain, but not too much. The temps are going to be in the low 80’s for the next week- what a welcome change! Our older DGS is home this weekend from boarding school so we will grill steaks in between rain showers. So glad to have him home for a few days. I am now taking the Pasta salad and will use the first recipe. Had to stop reading the Daily to copy the recipe. Yum! Thank you, Debbie! We got our flu, covid and tetanus shots this week. DH had no reaction and I had a a slight upset tummy for 36 hours. Our cruise leaves on Sept 26, so this was available just under the wire. For the Daily Garden Group, this pic is the end of the season for my Moonflowers. I planted a small packet in the ground by basically throwing them out. They are the first thing we see when opening the back door. They glow in the dark! Kind thoughts to everyone on the Daily, with special prayers for everyone. Debbie

Thank you, Sandi, for the Daily! I think I would like the meal suggestion. It has everything I like it in. The wine and drink sound interesting. I wanted to be a telephone operator when I was a kid. I liked the tv shows where somebody plugged in all those wires and mistakes were made that were funny. I got to do it one time just before a large bank here was closed for good. It was a blast. It will be in the low 90’s again here today, but with some rain expected! We have both had covid again recently. Then DD, and now DGS has it. We are back to mask wearing just in case……. Stay safe, everyone! Prayers and smiles for all on the Daily. Debbie- 127 replies

The Fleet Report and Daily for Thursday August 22nd, 2024
doobieb replied to richwmn's topic in Holland America Line
Happy Thursday! It is starting out as a gorgeous day here in north Alabama. A tad cool so it seems perfect for my morning walk. Never heard of Run Chata, but I made a note of one of the recipes to try as soon as the chill in the air is back for good. Happy anniversary to @grapau27 and Pauline. Looking forward to pictures of your anniversary food! Thank you, @StLouisCruisers for remembering my DH in the care prayers. He is s much better asnd tray is day 4 of the 5 day Paxlovid med. This bout hit quickly after exposure and he was flat out for 36 hours before getting the medicine. You can remove him from the top of the prayers list for sure. And thank you. My find Leesa with breast cancer will come home Sunday from an extended stay in south Alabama following surgery. All reports are great- at this point no further surgery and no chemo or radiation are prescribed. Seems amazing and I am sure all the prayers she has received have helped her have a good prognosis . Today will be a fun day. I will pick up our 14 yr old DGS for an overnight stay while his parents visit the older DGS away at boarding school. This one likes to plan meals and is pretty good at it. Don’t know how long that will last but it makes cooking fun to have him involved. I see that Oosterdam has an Irish music cruise. I would love to be a fly on the wall for that one. We board her on Sept. 29. @kazu, that is one happy relator! ! Debbie- 126 replies
