  1. Hi- We will be between cruises at Port Canaveral for a day and a night in Oct. It will be my mother's birthday so I would like to stay somewhere really special. Where would anyone suggest. We would like somewhere with a nice pool for my 9 year old- we were vaguely thinking of the Ron Jon resort.

Also any advice on what to do. My mother is not interested in going to the SPace centre- though I wouldn't mind. We are from Australia so we don't really need to spend a day at the beach.

    Thanks Jennie

    Hello Jennie,

If you will click on the link right above my name, this thread will give you pages and pages of information you can make decisions on as what to do, where to go, what to see etc.

also check out Cocoa Village website.

    ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Shirley, thanks for the info. Will check out that site. I'm sure we will find alot to keep us busy.

As to my footnote on veterans - my son enlisted in the Navy submarine program 6 years ago. I ran across that quote and have never forgot it. I felt this was the place to put it so that every time I'm here planning a cruise it reminds me why I have that freedom and the people that lost their lives for us to have it.

    Debbie

    Hello Debbie,

thanks so much for sharing - my grandson, nephew and Godson are now serving in Afghanistan and I love the saying

I also wanted to mention that if anyone is driving anywhere in this area, to watch out for those traffic lights cameras - I know someone that got the summon in the mail with picture and price ticket of $158.00.

Have a great time on your cruise

  3. Thanks all for the info on the shuttle siteings. Guess we will pass and do something else. Maybe a trip to Epcot. We've been to Disneyland many times since we lived in CA. So, Disneyworld is a pass too. Is there anything to do near the port? We are there most of the day. Again, thanks for the info.

First I want to sincerely thank you for your footnote about veterans - the statement is so deeply true and made me stop, think and thank all of them again.

Anyhow just click above my name and you can scroll through different places you can go and see - good luck and I am sure you will have a lot of input as what could interesting for you. Good luck and enjoy!!!!!!!!!!

  4. OK. The info on this site is very overwhelming, too much to read at once. Just need to know what is the best way to get from a WDW resort to Port Canaveral and where in Port Canaveral do I go for a RCCL cruise?

Then going to need to get back from PC to MCO. What is best for that. Will only be me and my 13 year old. I don't really want to rent a car, but if that is the best way, where would I drop it off at? And would I even be able to get one at our Disney resort?

    TIA

Hello galcruzer - rent a car for it really is a straight shot - the car rentals we have here are Hertz, Budget, Avis, Enterprise, thrifty and dollar - when you get on hwy 528, you will be guided by signs as to where to go for your cruise.

    good luck and enjoy!!!!!!!!!

  5. WHOOPEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! Went by to check on how the work was going on with the new bridge and there were trucks ON THE BRIDGE so looks like the bridge will be ready to be open on the 16th as predicted so those that will be coming here next week will be back normal as far as traveling the straight shot from the airport here and visa versa.

    Will keep you posted

HUGSSSSSSSSSSSSS TO EVERYONE FOR A VERY HAPPY VALENTINES DAY TOMORROW:)

  6. Not sure if this is where I should post this, but figure there is alot of locals on here that probably know the answer or can shed some light on my decision. My husband and I are arriving on Feb 21 on the Enchanment of the Seas. This is our first port stop. I was interest in seeing the Space Center. I realize that the Shuttle is expected to launch a few days later. What do you think are the possibilities of seeing the Shuttle on the launch or do you think with all the security and hype about it being the last one that they wouldn't take the tours anywhere near that area? Am I wasting my money and should I just plan another tour? Thanks for any help you locals can give.

With all the hussle and bussle going on especially with security, no you will not be able to see the shuttle on the launch site - sorreeeeeeeee - times have changed unfortunately

  7. I am wondering how construction on the bridge is going, when will it open back up?

Norm and I rode by there yesterday - it has been said that the construction is on and is suppose to be completed by the 16th and it appears as though it will be - the workers have been on it 24/7 since the back log of cars is horrific for those that are going to work at the Cape or Orlando - I, too, will be glad when it is finally finish

  8. We are looking at hitting Grills for breakfest (as suggested) to view the ships comming in on Sunday before our cruise on Monday. Does anyone know what hours they are open? Plan on heading up to the space center afterworeds.

Thanks for all of the wonderful responses on this thread I wish there was one for each port. It is great knowing what the local would do.

    Here you go

  9. Good morning everybody

I am getting ready to update post #862 and wanted to know if anyone had any special inquires for me to check on and listed on the update - I know some of the links are broken, but will try to make sure every one of them are working although not much time is given for editing and me I get so darn nervous with the rushing just to make sure they all work such as the weather, where to get the best gas prices, etc. I have to make some changes since of the businesses are no longer opened to prevent folks from going only to find that the place is no longer there -

Anyhow just give me a heads up ok?

Oh by the way, the new bridge is really going up fast and looks like the company will meet the deadline. Again I know it is very inconvient BUT at least it does move and you will get to where you want to go - please keep the patience high and the speed slow:)

Thanks for everything everyone does for each other here - you are so appreciated

    Hugssssssssssss

just me chatting with you during early coffee time :)

  10. We used Avis rental car to get from Disney World (we stayed for a few days before our cruise) to port on 1/15. Renting from the Hilton near Downtown Disney was pretty simple and we got our car quickly. Drove to Avis in Cape Canaveral without any problems. Once we got there and returned the car we found out that one of Avis's shuttle buses had broke down and there were about 15 people waiting for transportation to the port. However, after a short wait (maybe 5 minutes) a Budget shuttle and the other Avis shuttle pulled up and everyone was able to make it to the port. The Avis employees apologized for the inconvenience and were very nice. Once we returned from the cruise we waited for about 15 minutes for the shuttle to pick us up from port and take us back to the rental office. We got a car and were on our way with no problems. We did forget to fill the car up before returning it to MCO (our fault completely, as we got close to the airport we didn't see a gas station and just decided to return the car) so it did cost us an extra $13.99 for the gas. The only complaint I have was that we were charged for LDW even though we declined it. I kept my receipt that shows we declined it even though the email receipt I received shows we were charged for it and they are refunding the charge (I'm still waiting for my refund though and it's been 5 days, they said it would take 48 hours). But overall everything was very simple. I know I had read some negative reviews of the Cape Canaveral Avis lately and I just wanted to put it out there that our experience was a good one despite a few problems and that we would use them again.

Look drop Bob from Avis a note if you don't get your refund soon and he will take care of it without any further problems - this email is Surfercal8@aol.com

Budget and Avis are sisters but really all the rental agencies help each other here when it is needed which is something I really respect them for.

Glad all went well and come back when you can

  11. I just read about the horrendous accident on the Beachline on Merritt Island. My prayers to the families of the 2 drivers.

Shirley I read on DIS boards that you and your DH missed this mess by 15 minutes, thank goodness you're ok.

I'm wondering now how we should alter our route to get to PC now. We will be coming from I95. I read the eastbound lane could be close for 25 days or so. I'm sure many of us would appreciate a suggested route. Thank you in advance for suggestions.

    JoAnn

    Hello JoAnn,

Norm and I got on the East bound side around 3:20 PM - traffic was normal and less than 15 minutes later, everyone was yelling about a horrific accident there on Merritt Island.

I lived here when 528 was started and remembered how many times my children played on that bridge after its construction but still closed to traffic - the accident was very sad

Anyhow I will keep posting the updates from the newspaper so that you can see what the planned route is - We took it yesterday and although it is not going to be as easy as driving straight through, I really believe everyone will be ok - just be cautious which is something that should be done anyway.

    Blessings always

    http://www.floridatoday.com/article/20110123/NEWS01/101230328/1006/Crews+scurry+to+repair+road

PS Joann you can get off at Hwy 520 and drive through Cocoa, Merritt Island and then Cocoa Beach - the only turn you will make is once you get into Cocoa Beach - you turn LEFT TO GO TO CAPE CANAVERAL or RIGHT TO COCOA BEACH - you can call or email any of the hotels you are staying at and I know they will do everything possible to make your trip over as easy as possible

  12. Have anyone use Executive Vip limo service lately? I'm trying to find any reviews, pictures, or limo type info if you have any. I'm hoping to use them for our Disney Cruise in June. TIA

You will not be disappointed - Michael is a local who knows the area well and gives you an insight to all the area surrounding no matter where you are taken - so far they have had great reviews.

  13. looking for some place for dinner before our FOS cruise...staying at Radisson & don't want anything fancy. Some good seafood with a nice view???? Anyone??

If you will click just above my name, you will find a great deal of information that will help

or you can do a search on this thread and you will a number of input from so many.

  14. We are traveling arriving at Cape Canveral on a Saturday and sailing Monday on the Monarch. I was looking at the port cruise schedules. Did I read it right. We could see 3 ships in port on Sunday morning? If so is there some place we can get breakfest while viewing the ships?

    Thanks!

the best place to watch the ships which are RCCL Freedom of the Seas, Carnival Sensation and the new Disney ship the Dream which will start sailing on Thursday and Sunday after their maiden voyage on the 26th. If you choose to go back in the afternoon for supper around 4 or so, you can see the ships pass right by all the restaurants at the port - Me? I would go to Rusty's for supper, Grills for breakfast, but that is my choice -

ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! with any of your choices :)

  15. Then I guess, we won't visit the zoo since I didn't want to drive in the area....do you know how much would a cab cost to go there???? sorry too many questions!!!!

Hello manonreal - I know you have gotten some excellent suggestions here on going to the zoo, but in all honestly, it is so easy and such a beautiful drive - first think about renting a car for it so much more comfortable to do so - you start out going on A1A for about 11 miles South until you come to Pineda Causeway which is just pasted Patrick Air Force base, turn West (Right) and go over the bridges that crosses the Banana River and then Indian River - you keep on heading West until you come to Wickham Blvd - turn right and just keep driving for you will see signs on both sides - Its maybe 4 or so miles North - as I said the drive is very pretty and comforting for you have the Atlantic Ocean until you turn West and then the 2 rivers - you make exactly 2 turns from whereever you rent the car - traffic isn't bad once you leave Cocoa Beach so hope you will think of about what it has to offer.

    ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS - it will take less than 1/2 hour to get there unless you get caught up in seeing the kids surfing and playing on the beach :)

  16. No problem Shirley...Joe P and Robert did everything they could to make our stay a great one and they succeeded.

They have a beautiful property..there was a wedding being held the day we arrived..I figured that would impact our stay...not at all. If I hadn't walked past the convention center I wouldn't have known there was a wedding there at all. No noise and the large property easily accomodated hotel guests as well as the wedding guests.

The foyer is gorgeous...nice sitting areas...I walked the property and it is well lit and I felt very safe there. Every staff member was courteous and helpful. Robert is a scream and very professional. He asked us several times if everything was to our satisfaction. He is a very "customer service" oriented person.

There were a lot of "cruisers" staying there...the day we arrived, Saturday, the shuttle was taking Disney and Carnival pax to the port. The whole procedure seemed to be very well set up and it went smoothly from what we could tell.

VIP...very professional as well...we were supposed to be picked up in a sedan at the airport but that car was being used..so they picked us up in a stretch limo!!! Very nice ride indeed. They really bend over backwards to make certain that their customers are taken care of. They are very friendly and professionals. We could highly recommend them!!

Thai Thai is a busy little place. The sushi is wonderful and their other dishes are as well. They have an extensive menu and they were very busy lunch time. Alot of locals go there as well as Radisson guests...

    Hello my friend,

I am so glad all went well for you - Thai Thai is nice, but Norm and I found that Siam Orchid in Cocoa Beach is not only less expensive, but their menu is even more extensive and I have found that the staff are more attentive and more of the locals go there - we changed for a number of reasons, but the main one was the lenght that the staff go to make you feel so welcomed and they will give you an extra treat if you mention the CC board. Joe and Robert are so great at their job and love and care about their visitors.

Joe has always been special to me since he is the one that came and helped in 2004 with all the cruisers I had here that needed to get to a safe zone before Frances hit - Joe really showed what he will do when in need.

Thanks and don't forget to come back to see us even if its not a cruise :)

  17. Shirley...Radisson at the Port was FABULOUS!!!..The property is beautiful..the pools sparkle...and the Koi pools are gorgeous as well. Joe P and his staff are great as well. They just couldn't do enough to make certain our stay was a great experience.

The rooms are nicely decorated and the beds are very comfortable...we did have breakfast and the food was very good and the wait staff friendly.

They do have a seafood buffet every Saturday night..look yummy but we had eaten a late lunch at Thai Thai and were still full dinner time.

The food at Thai Thai was outstanding...great recommendation.

VIP limo...class act. We were picked up at the airport right on time and delivered safely to our hotel. Return was great as well..once we were through customs we called and were picked up and transported back to the airport.

Thanks for your great advice and recommendations...!!!

Hey there Bakincakes - I am so glad that you stopped back and let us know how your time with us went and that the service here was good also. Remember to keep coming back to the board so that you can help others that may need help.

Again glad all went well and sorry to see your time here over for now.

Blessing for the new year :)

  18. Hello Ms. Shirley

I have a question for you. I'm looking for a good seafood restaurant that is not a tourist trap. A place where you would go and eat fresh seafood. It doesn't have to be fancy but a place that perhaps the locals eat. Thank you in advance.

The one Norm and I like is Florida Seafood which is on Highway 520 (Cocoa Beach Highway) but Rusty's is still number one for us -Preston is right on it with his suggestions and many of the locals go to these places and if you like blue crabs, there is no other place but The old Crab shack located at White Rose Shopping center also on hway 520.

Anyhow hope whichever place you choose, it will be very enjoyable - make sure whereever you go, to tell them you are off this board for most of the time, you will be given an extra treat for doing so.

  19. How do I get to Avis after the cruise.. When I called they told me that they dont run a shuttle and I would have to walk there.. is this correct ???

WHAAAAAAAAAT??? This is a joke right? No pickwick I really believed you called a wrong number and someone was playing a joke with you - you call Avis (if you will click on the link just above my name, you will have their direct phone number) and they will arrange your reservations AND will make sure that their shuttle will get you to the right ship. EVEN if you had the strenght to walk to the port, you most likely would have many scary encounters with our heavy traffic, places to walk through, over etc - you came to the right place when you stopped by this thread - good choice :) we take care of our visitors very well
