Summit dry dock refurbishment

Treacher1

Recommended Posts

We just booked a Southern Summit cruise for the week after Christmas. Someone said that she is in need of refurbishment - and someone else online in a blog said refurbishment is scheduled for April.

Has anyone sailed Summit recently? What was general shape? Does anyone know what will be done?

Any information greatly appreciated.

We just returned from Summit. She's on her way to Europe for a refurb. She's doing a 12 day cruise and then will be 20 days in refurb. to change many things. We've sailed this ship 4 times and, although yes there is some wear and tear, she's spotlessly clean and great. We understood they will be changing things in the Martini Bar, main dining room and common areas. It will be interesting to see how she looks when she's done.

I wouldn't worry. The staff and crew were still one of the best at sea, friendly, helpful and right there for you. I'm sure that won't change.

Enjoy your cruise.

Did they perhaps mention that they are filling in the "hole" in the martini bar?

I totally agree with Pat; was on the same cruise and couldn't find anything unusually worn. The ship looked great, and was very clean.

The bedding, beds, towels and some rugs have already been changed. The bedding was wonderful and the beds have that curve at the foot so you don't break your leg if you get up during the night. They were replacing curtains, rugs and even the umbrellas, the information booklets, etc. in the cabins while we were on board.

No, nothing about the hole in the Martini Bar but it was nice because the music from the Rendevous Lounge wasn't bad this time around. The acapella group also performed there before late dinner seating and it was nice.

Of course the pool band, Great Ideas, was NOT at all good. When you go on a Caribbean cruise and have a Philippine band who can't sing, not a good thing. I think Celeb should reconsider where and when they place their pool bands! Just my opinion.

Loved Summit and can't wait to see what they finally do to her.

  • 2 weeks later...

Please, please, please let us know about the Summit's rehab! We sail on the June 16th Cruise and can't wait!!! I'll be exciting to hear about how the ship looks now. I was concerned about some reports that things were worn - know it happens but happy to hear she'll be newer!

Lets hope they fix the "Bar at the Edge of the Earth" aesthetic problem.

Does anyone know if Johannes from South Africa is a Maitre de' or assittant Md on board. He was on Infinity a few years ago and I had heard he transfered to another ship.

Amen...That place is ugly. The location is so good and the decorations so bad!

I just returned from the 12 day transatlantic crossing before she went into drydock. Heard several differences in opinions from staff as to just how much was going to be done. My cabin condition was quite good - the carpeting was so so. I found the staff on the ship VERY service oriented, and I had the best waiter and cabin steward I have ever had. Much better than recent Princess cruises I have been on.

I will be interested to hear exactly what is to be done. Engines are of course a high priority.

July 22, 2008. So excited to see what a refurbished ship looks like. For those of you on her before us can I ask 2 things of you?

1) report back of any changes noticed?

2) leave her in good shape for us in July....

Thanks

Mark

We too are just back from the Summit TA cruise just before it went into dry dock.

An example of wear that was extremely apparent, but which had absolutely no effect on our enjoyment of the cruise, was the walking/running track on deck 11. There were a large number of areas at the margin of the red track and gray deck where the concrete (or whatever) had been worn away. It is pretty obvious that this will require a major resurfacing effort which could not be done on the fly in the middle of a cruise.

As usual, we saw continuing repair and maintenance activities on a daily basis - cleaning all the carpets in a our corridor, repairing a carpet seam near the elevator, sanding and varnishing the paneling behind the 10 Aft bar, etc.

All in all, an excellent ship will be even better after the current dry dock.

Sailed Summit 2/9/08. If I had not read about the "worn" condition, I would not have really noticed anything drastic. Yes there was wear and tear but I have seen it on other Celeb ship, RC and Costa and they were no where near ready for dry dock. I have to agree that the new beds are VERY comfy and who ever posted about the rounded corners at the end of the bed hit it head on, no banging your knees! Ecellent crew, best main dining dinners, A+ except for the slots (toooo tight). We will be back but avoid the casino, which is too bad because it's our wind down time after dinner and the show! We also just returned from the Summit transatlantic, very rough BTW. We were told they will be cutting open the hull to pull out the engines and replace them with new engines, also we heard that the shops will see a major refit. We found the ship very dirty in all areas and will never take a cruise on a ship heading for dry dock again.

I dont care too much about the refurb...we were on the Mille in Feb and it was a bit tattered..but the food was the best we have eaten on any cruise...(25)...a marked difference from our Constellation cruise last fall..

so hoping for great food on the summit ..we will be in the Med in Oct 08...just wish it was more consistent...from ship to ship..from sailing to sailing...

I was on the cruise before yours, and everything was tip top. They were cleaning and painting continuously. I was actually wondering what they would be doing in drydock, but I know it is engine work.

Loved looking at the Summit in dry dock...we are scheduled to sail on the Summit this Tuesday 04/29 from Southampton...will she be on time???? After 25 cruises, we have never been the first to cruise on a ship after dry dock,,,should we be concerned??? Sure she'll look good but what about the mechanics, engines, etc?

Regards,

Teri
