AryMay Posted December 22, 2017 #1 Share Posted December 22, 2017 I'm in the process of reading "The Path Between the Seas" by David McCullough...but not sure I'm going to make it through the nearly 700 pages. (But I'll keep trying...) In the meantime, I discovered a wonderful documentary on the history of the Panama Canal produced by PBS...The American Experience. The episode on the Panama Canal was #3 in the 4th season (2011) and is available on Amazon. For Prime members, the video is free, for others it is only a couple of dollars to rent. If you are like me and would rather "watch" than "read"...check it out. Seeing what was involved in the building of the canal will make our transit in April all the more interesting! Rare babs135 Posted December 26, 2017 #3 Share Posted December 26, 2017 I've nearly finished the book - only 100 pages to go and 12 days before we sail; should manage it, just!!! Fortunately here in the UK we have access to PBS America and DH and I have just finished watching the programme. What a feat of engineering. Can't wait until we see the real thing. Thanks for letting us know about the programme. A real treat.
Alaskanb Posted December 29, 2017 #4 Share Posted December 29, 2017 Another American Experience program to watch is The Great Fever. It is about Yellow Fever. Control of yellow fever was essential for the construction of the Panama Canal. Fascinating story -- Walter Reed played an essential part in it. The Panama Canal one is also on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGbrYa8O-ag
