On all our cruises to Antigua- the ships Captain, CD etc pronounced it with a w- Antingwua- I found that the locals do not - it's Antiga to them

 

 

 

Our tour guide yesterday explained it: the name came from Columbus, who transported it it from Europe, pronounced Antigwa. Over time, in a nod to their independence, the local pronunciation is Antiga (no w).

lol. Our cab driver from airport quickly corrected us - Antiga not gwa.. That's funny. I actually was corrected by non Antiguans on my new pronunciation. They stated that they were frequent cruisers to the Caribbean and I was NOT pronouncing it correctly. I said ok....:rolleyes:
