From NCL's Welcome Aboard booklet:

What about currency?

You may cash traveler’s checks at the Reception Desk. Travelers checks and most major credit cards are accepted in the ports we visit. Remember, proper ID is required when cashing travelers checks. We recommend that you carry a small amount of local currency when visiting foreign ports, although we’ve found that credit cards are commonly accepted inshops and restaurants.

Even though NCL says that travelers checks are accepted in most ports they visit, very few places accept them. You CAN cash them onboard at front desk, so I'd recommend doing that.

You can also do it in the casino, no fees charged. I've done it both at Guest Relations and he Casino with no problems. However, if I want to cash a larger amount (usually more than $200) I wait to do it in the casino knowing they have the cash available. A couple of times on the Star and the Dawn the Guest Relations desk had to gather enough funds for my $100 cheque.
