SwissMyst Posted April 17, 2011 #2 Share Posted April 17, 2011 Not sure what you mean by "long term travel" insurance -- is this for health insurance abroad or emergency medical evacuation insurance? We keep a medical emergency evacuation policy going with membership in DAN, which is a Divers group and this relatively inexpensive year long limited coverage comes with the annual membership. While set up primarily for scuba divers, it is open to all and also handles non-diving health emergencies and other short-term travel emergency needs (legal help etc) but is primarily a medical evacuation policy with some short-term onsite medical coverage but only if you call their international number to set up these services with their agents. It has had a good reputation and is very low cost. Take a look at the DAN (Divers Alert Network) -, but please, please, please read the contract very carefully to see if this meets your needs and will provide meaningful coverage. http://www.diversalertnetwork.org/membership/benefits.asp This is not "trip" insurance in case a travel arrangement fails -- but they also have links to agents who can provide you this as well. Rare Essiesmom Posted April 17, 2011 #4 Share Posted April 17, 2011 Depending on the country she will be in, they may have universal health care and she would not need supplemental insurance. They do have good hospitals in Europe...no need for evacuation. EM
hillside Posted April 17, 2011 #5 Share Posted April 17, 2011 We have medjet assist insurance that picks you up and brings you home if you are hospitalized. You can check that out online. You can buy it on an annual basis. It is discounted through AARP. Traveling friends told us about it and we have that. Hope we never have to use it. superoma Posted April 17, 2011 #6 Share Posted April 17, 2011 Depending on the country she will be in, they may have universal health care and she would not need supplemental insurance. They do have good hospitals in Europe...no need for evacuation. EM Be very careful - just because a country has universal health care, a visitor is NOT covered. My niece from Germany was here in canada last summer and needed to go to emergency. she was charged a hefty fee to use the emerg, the doctor and for the tests she had to have - and it had to be paid by credit card before she was served. She did get it all repaid from her supplemental health insurance. Know, too, that universal health coverage may NOT cover the cost of drugs prescribed, even if she has coverage. As residents of Ontario, all our doctor and hospital visits are covered, almost all medical tests are covered but drugs and dental are NOT covered and are paid out of pocket if one does not have supplemental insurance just as an example. However, your DD seems to be classified as a temporary resident and being provided with health coverage. Double check what is covered and where in Europe her coverage is good and she might be good to go. I agree that European hospitals in countries like Britain, Germany, France, Switzerland, the Scandivanian countries are very good, but if you are going to Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, some of the Balkan countries, i would get evacuation insurance. Steph123 Posted April 17, 2011 #7 Share Posted April 17, 2011 If you have American Express credit card you could check with them. We pay $13 per month (this covers both of us for the $13) for emergency and evacution ins. for when we travel that does not require full travel ins. Replies may be posted on this Board or the Holland America Board, or both.
SadieN Posted April 17, 2011 Author #9 Share Posted April 17, 2011 Thanks for the info. She will be studying in Italy, getting a 9month student visa and will buy an Italian Health Card. Still figuring out to what that entitles. I know she will need evac ins and catastrophic health. I've known 2 people who have used theirs. One shattered her leg and the other became a quadrapalegic. Host Walt- Didn't know abouth the Travel Insurance Board. Thanks.:):)
Mary Ellen Posted April 17, 2011 #10 Share Posted April 17, 2011 We have medjet assist insurance that picks you up and brings you home if you are hospitalized. We also have this. It covers trips under a certain length. The OP's daughter will be gone too long for this policy to be applicable.
