do OBCs carry over?

No they do not carry over. Refundable credit that was given by a credit card charge (not any ncl.com promo, TA promos etc) can be refunded the balance you didn't spend. Any credit that is "non-refundable" such as the "book a balcony cabin get 100 obc" you lose what you don't use.

IM NOT SURE...BUT i WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THAT IF I PUT OBC ON MY ACCOUNT AND DONT USE IT CAN I GET A CREDIT BACK TO MY CC?

What sort of situation could you have that would result in money left over? By time you add in drinks, bingo, gifts, speciality restaurants, tours, daily tips, just about any OBC would be gone??

We are sailing back to back on the Jade in Jan/Feb. I'm wondering if I have any left over credit from the first sailing, will it carry over to the second sailing? We have $300 per sailing now, and if the fuel charges are refunded, we will have over $1000 total. That's a lot of drinks.....

Based on how I read it, if you're being given $300 OBC per sailing, I doubt if they will carry over anything that's left over. In other words, they consider each leg a separate sailing. If they had considered it a single sailing, you would have received $600 OBC all at once - or maybe not. Perhaps you're lucky that they counted the b-to-b as two separate sailings.

Just to add, any refundable credit that is not used on board is refunded through the Miami office through the original method of payment. So for example if a friend gives you a refundable credit through purchasing a bon voyage gift, it would actually be refunded back to your friend if you don't use it all. Also remember that the refundable credit applies to all charges onboard, while the non refundable does not apply towards the service charge or in the casino. Non refundable credits are the more popular credits (example: the ones that are given as a bonus for booking your cruise) We get these questions a lot in finance onboard.

I have the same question, Diana. We don't have as much initial OBC as you do, but IF we do get the fuel charge rebate (and it looks good for that right now as they will do the 'math' for the first quarter of '09 on 12/18) then we will be scrambling to spend our OBC on our B2B also! I imagine the specialty restaurants will be swamped!!! What a bummer if we can't even use any funds left over from the first leg on the second, because for some reason we have more OBC on our first leg and it is only a 9 day cruise!

COULD YOU POSSIBLY USE THE OBC CREDIT FOR THE 250$ DEPOSIT CERTIFICATE FOR A FUTURE CRUISE? JUST A THOUGHT ON HOW YOU COULD USE IT UP:confused:

I don't know if you guys doing the B2B's asking about OBC drink much alcohol, but one idea for you is to use the OBC from the first leg of your trip to buy alcohol in the gift shop. You are able to claim it on your last night of the first leg of your cruise and then you will have that in your cabin to drink for the second leg of your trip.

I am sure you guys are the same as me in that I am not just goiing to let OBC go to waste. I am sure you will find a lot of things you can spend that OBC on rather than it just not being used.. 8-)

I had asked on another thread about uses of OBC. Was told that TA and NCL OBC cannot be used in the casino or for service charges and I accept that, but if we do get an OBC refund for our fuel surcharge, will we be able to use it without restrictions or get a refund since it was paid by us? Not that I think that we wouldn't use it up. Just curious since NCL seems to handle OBC differently. Thanks Bill

There are two ways to think of OBC.

If the OBC was a promo to lure you into booking a cruise, the the use of it is restricted.

If the OBC is a direct response to money you paid out of pocket, (ie a bon voyage gift or a refund of some sort by the cruise line), you can use it for any and every thing, no restrictions.

In reponsce to being back to back, you will only have one account onboard for the entire time you are onboard, so that saying the obc will be able to be used for the entire trip. (Just make sure to stop by reception and double check that they have you in the system leaving on the right date, that way in finance your account will remain the same instead of having two) If you booked your b2b together and have one reservation number you should be fine.

Thanks Terry. I have already planed on doing this. We have done it before, but still over $1000 is a lot when you can't use it in the casino or for service charges, and we have independent tours. I told DH that he might have to get a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue(he's always wanted to try it), or I might get something nice from the jewelry shop onboard. :D

Thanks cello! You sound very knowledgeable, so I do hope that you are right. We have two reservation numbers, but we are in the same cabin for both sailings, so I will check with reception to make sure.

Actually, I'm going to disagree with the vast majority of people on the boards. I believe if you are refunded fuel surplus charges, you will be able to use that OBC in the casino or for any charge. That is a little different than them giving you an OBC as a promo. They are refunding you money paid. I can tell you this, if they do put restrictions on that money for what it can be used for, the government should investigate their accounting practices because I can ASSURE you the will file it on their taxes as a refund given to the pax.

Well shut my mouth! I've been lied to! lol

I thought ANY left over OBC was NOT credited back to you, but could only be used for OBC on your next cruise.

Sorry if I've led anyone astray! I claim ignorance!! ;)

  • 2 months later...

Just to let everyone know, on our B2B Jade cruises - 1/16 & 1/25 any unspent OBC DID carry over to the next leg (as long as we were in the same cabin) Additionally, there were NO RESTRICTIONS placed on any of our onboard credits! We could use them to pay our service charges, for excursions, for the furture cruise rewards program, and one couple actually went to the casino the night before our private excursion to Ephesus and just withdrew $400 cash!

Perhaps this change in policy was fue to the fact that so very many of us on these sailings had pre-paid fuel supplements that were refunded to us as OBC.
