Travelcat2 Posted December 28, 2009 #2 Share Posted December 28, 2009 We were in Rome, Greece and Turkey within the past year. No, we did not need to carry our passports (in fact, all passports were kept on the cruise ship). It is really important to keep a copy of your passport in your luggage. It should not be necessary to carry it with you when you are in port (unless it makes you feel better).
paul929207 Posted December 28, 2009 #3 Share Posted December 28, 2009 I would carry a copy of the passport and leave the actual passport in your safe, unless the ship tells you to bring the passport.
Rare broberts Posted December 28, 2009 #4 Share Posted December 28, 2009 If you leave your passports aboard and you miss the sailing you may have quite a difficult time catching up to the ship. A photocopy might help at the embassy but that's about it. You'll likely need to present photo id sometime before re-boarding so I would leave a copy in the safe and take the passport. But you'll see lots of opinions either way.
kitty9 Posted December 29, 2009 #5 Share Posted December 29, 2009 Many cruise lines take your passport for Med cruises, and other exotic itineraries, and keep them for the duration of the cruise. So if the cruise line feels you don't need your passport, than that's fine by me. The only place we've needed to keep our passports on our person was in Russia. Any other place, it's not necessary. Heck, you don't even get your passport stamped anymore in most places. To the person who said if you miss the ship, you're out of luck, that's not at all true. FYI, you can get an emergency passport at any US embassy or consulate, even if you don't have the info page of your passport--although that does help expedite the process. Any US citizen can vouch for you as to your status. Also, if someone misses the ship, they will get your passport to the local port agent who will give it to the passenger.
