Splendor - Likes and Dislikes Please

Booked a sort of spur of the moment cruise on the Splendor for next Feb. Not so much spur of the moment as far as when, since it's over a year out. But for the ship.

Found a good price (what I think is a good price anyway :o) on an inside cabin 7 days going to Cabo, Mazatlan, PV. But I don't really know anything about the Splendor itself. Other than it is sort of a one of a kind ship for Carnival and pink.

Trying to get a "cheap" cruise in so that our cruise on the Magic next Sept is DW's 10th. So I liked the price and itinerary (did same Nov '08) and just booked it without doing any research into the ship itself.

So what do you like and dislike about the Splendor?

hey-- after you get used to the pink polk-a-dot walls it is a great looking ship LOL

we especially enjoyed the RUbusto bar-- cigar bar with live latin music every eve that allows kids of all ages to dance and doesnt smell , the leather sofas are awesome.

the sports bar also -- very casual , smoking allowed too, with popcorn and

game food.

our steward from Thialand was awesome.. I wanted to take him home he he

their was alot of Latinos aboard which I enjoy.. I like the way they dance!

have a great trip, hey cheap is even better!!!

the piano bar was empty... not sure but the main guy must have been sick!!

that guy was not all that fun, obviously:(

For the most part, I LOVED the ship. The only things I didn't care for were 1) the cruise ended up going north instead of south (something about a flu in Mexico....) and 2) the cruise director wasn't that good - nor was his staff. There wasn't a lot of variety. I think there is a new cruise director there now - and obviously you are going south to sun, sand, and salt water (okay we had salt water but it never got above 50 and rained a lot)!!!

I liked nearly everything about it. However, one thing I DIDN'T like was that, because of the "new and improved" spa with thallassotherapy pool and steam rooms for spa guests and those who bought a pass, they no longer have free steam rooms. There is a tiny sauna in one of the locker rooms, and that is all. Other Carnival ships I have sailed have offered both sauna and steam room without an additional charge.

We booked an inside spa room last Aug. Liked the spa facilities.

Never liked the location of the internet room on Carnival ships. You have to go thru the smokey lounge and even with the door closed, can still smell the smoke. Usually after about 1/2 hr I begin to feel sick there. I heard that is changing on some ships, hopefully on all.

Liked the Mongolian wok. The line up gets long after the first day, after people find out about it.

I always look forward to the tiramizu dessert, but on the Splendor I found it was made too sweet.

The sushi bar was good. Near there they also sell the Future Vacation Vouchers. We bought more.

It's a new ship. We liked it.

Can someone tell me how the weather is in middle of January?

Our January 10th trip was great, we had beautiful weather until we returned back to L.A. and had the most rain in 1,000,000 years for the area.

My review had pics and you can see lots of sumshine.

To the OP, the only things we did not like was tea in the main dining room as on the last day the boat was vibrating quite a bit at the aft and the smoking in the piano bar. My review has some dislikes, but plenty of likes.

It is a good ship, you should have a great cruise.

You can find my review with lots of photos and the capers from the cruise as links in my signature.

DH and I loved the Splendor. :D:p:) We enjoyed our trip in Oct so much that we are booked again for May 9th. I did think that the Cruise Director wasn't very exciting; she said "umm" a lot when she talked. Nothing really bothered me about the cruise or ship. We did the "Behind the Fun" tour which is on the last sea day and I recommend it. Very informative, but be aware there is a lot of walking. The wait staff in the Golden Pearl dinning room was the best we have ever had!

Enjoy your cruise!

I was on that same cruise and did NOT care for cruise director "Brad" and his telling me to get some "Breakkie" every morning!! LUCKILY he is not the Splendor cruise director anymore!

I am giving this cruise a try again to see if I can go South this time to WARM weather and not cold rain :)

We just got home from the Splendor (24th - 31st). Our thoughts

Embark: went fairly well except for the ship arriving late which held us back a couple of hours.

Crew: Great (especially our Cabin Steward and his Assistant). These peeps work very hard to keep you happy (exception according to my daughter and her friend is the peep working Club 02).

Food: Buffet Food is Buffet Food...Nuff Said

Decor: Just stay drunk and you won't notice the PINK ;) the Black Pearl is the worse decor we have ever seen and seating is uncomfortable. Pinnacle dining room has no atmosphere whatsoever.

Shows/Music: The band playing in the Spectacular Theater is AWESOME (horn section ROCKS!!!). Lido deck Rock and Roll party was good fun. Musicians on board were all good.

Casino: Likes my $$$ :p

Debark. What a GOAT ROPE

Drew B,

Is sauna in men room free?

Yes, they had a sauna and a "sort of" steam room - a shower you could pump steam into.

Can someone tell me how the weather is in middle of January?

We went January 17-24 -- When we left California it was sunny and about 55 degrees. First day at sea was too cold and windy to sit out by the pool so the cover was on and everyone was at the main pool (it was very sunny). Second day was sunny and the temperature started to rise (since we were getting farther South) and by noon it was quite comfortable to sit outside. In all the ports was sunny and 80-85 degrees. Last day on our way back to California was quite windy and nippy again and cover back on pool.

Glad to hear he is gone! Let us know how you like the South cruise. We may have to give it a try again.

For me, the SPLENDOR was too much like a Conquest Class ship (my least favorite class) and not enough like a Spirit Class ship. I expected something really new and different, not a rehash. Maybe I'm becoming jaded on Carnival. Cabins were typically Carnival virtually identical with ALL other Carnival ships. I always have a good time, but was disappointed in this "new" ship.

Food quality was still slipping as it has been for several years, IMHO. Service in the cabin and dining room was, as always, excellent. :)

The pink polka dots had no negative effect on me, but overall, IMHO, its time to retire Joe Farcus with a nice monthly stipend, a "thank you" and MOVE ON. :D

Just got off the Splendor yesterday.

LIKES: Unlike a previous poster, I loved the fact that there is a cover over lido deck. It was quite cool and/or rainy for most of our trip, so that makes it a usable space when otherwise it wouldn't be. I loved the Mongolian option at the buffet. The Rotisserie option was great. Embarkation was pretty easy. Service (cabin and dining room) was awesome.

DISLIKES: Did not like the supper club - will probably never go again. Disembarkation was a nightmare - we were zone 15 (I know zones went up to at least 27) and it was 11:30 when we got off. (We had been told the day before that their intention was to have the entire ship cleared by 10:30am). This ship has to HAUL back to port all day Saturday, so there is quite a bit of movement all day and night.
