Dolphin-dan Posted May 25, 2004 #1 Share Posted May 25, 2004 I know this has nothing to do with Royal Caribbean but what ever happened to the big red boat? That was the first ever cruise I have ever been on.
Guest wrinkles Posted May 25, 2004 #2 Share Posted May 25, 2004 Premier Cruise Lines went out of business not long after Disney came on with their ships. That was my children's first cruise at 2 and 4 and they still remember it. Leigh
EydieG Posted May 25, 2004 #3 Share Posted May 25, 2004 The Big Red Boat was our first cruise also, 1992. We hae enjoyed all of our cruises, but the Big Red Boat was the best.

michiganders Posted May 25, 2004 #5 Share Posted May 25, 2004 Go the Forum Category of "Cruise Discussion Topics", and then to the topic of "Whatever Happened To....". There are a couple of threads that talk about the Big Red Boat(s). We have good memories of our cruise on the Oceanic! iluvcruzin Posted May 25, 2004 #7 Share Posted May 25, 2004 When Premier went out of business, many learned the value of travel insurance. Cruises stopped mid way through many vacations. Those without travel insurance were left on their own to cover return flights etc.. I sailed on the inagural voyage of the SS Atlantic (early 89?). It was a terrific cruise. There were lots of disney characters onboard. I remember we had an outside cabin with a port hole.. Back when that was cool. Capt. Mike Posted May 25, 2004 #8 Share Posted May 25, 2004 The M/v "MELODY" is the only one still in service with MSC as far as I can determine. marciemi Posted May 25, 2004 #9 Share Posted May 25, 2004 We also started on the Big Red Boat on our honeymoon in 88. Took the kids 10 years later for an anniversary celebration. They were 3, 5, and 6 and also still remember it. We did Disney 2 years later (about the exact time Premier went out of business - was so glad we'd decided to try Disney!) We were not impressed with Disney compared to Big Red Boat, though, surprisingly. Thought the activities for kids were better, food was better, cabins were better (& much cheaper), characters (WB) were more plentiful all on BRB. This was a big surprise since we paid about twice as much for the Disney cruise. To get this thread back on topic, we're trying our first cruise since then with the kids - on RCL. I'll never forget the looks on their faces as we turned the corner and came over the hill and got our first glimpse of the Oceanic..... their jaws were on the floor and speechless!....priceless to say the least *** Soveriegn 92 E. cruisingnewyorkers Posted May 25, 2004 #12 Share Posted May 25, 2004 Our first cruise was on the Oceanic back in 1991 when it had the Disney characters, and before it was called The Big Red Boat. That's what got us hooked on crusing.
NanciRDH Posted May 25, 2004 #13 Share Posted May 25, 2004 The Oceanic ws our first cruise too, and we are now addicted! Funny thing was, dh and I were discussing the vacation just as it was about to end saying that it was not something we'd probably want to do every year (So wrong now!) While waiting to clear customs in one of the lounges they had a bingo game to win a free cruise, and we won! We had also hit it good in the casino, and actually came home with more $$ than we left with, plus another 4-day cruise to take within the next 12 months. That cruise we were not so lucky...we had banked our winnings for that vacation, but came home with nothing! Had to hit the ATM to buy gas and lunch. Nanci until we Serenade Alaska! love2 travel Posted May 26, 2004 #14 Share Posted May 26, 2004 We did the Majestic/big red boat for our honeymoon 10-89. I'll never forget that we made a ship-to-shore call after the big earthquake to check on family in southern CA. The ship was bought from Princess (still had princess- stamped towels etc). We had a great time, and it got our feet wet to cruising. We've been hooked ever since!!! Majestic: Oct. '89 Rhapsody of the Seas: May '01 Golden Princess: Dec. berd0625 Posted May 26, 2004 #15 Share Posted May 26, 2004 My daughter was 3 when we cruised on the Oceanic. Up to that time she was terrified of any costume characters. One look at Mickey and Minnie and we couldn't drag her away! We are committed to RCCL now and after speaking to others that have cruised other lines, we feel we've got the best choice going for us. aussiegirl Posted May 26, 2004 #17 Share Posted May 26, 2004 The Big Red Boat (Oceanic) was our first cruise too in 1996. We took our kids, then aged 8 and 5 years old. We recently took our second cruise with the kids now aged 16 and 13. Now, I have a photo of the four of us from the Oceanic cruise and a photo of us from our Splendour cruise on the coffee table. Back in 1996, I had my hands on my kids' shoulders but now my daughter is as tall as I am and my son towers over me! It sure is fun to look at those photos together. (Thanks for asking this question--we always wondered too.)
RiverRev Posted May 26, 2004 #18 Share Posted May 26, 2004 The mayor of NY wanted to buy the ships and use them as homeless shelters two years ago. Since the ships were to be berthed in the east river near some very Toni neighborhoods NIMBY killed the idea. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Navigator Of The Seas 1/

yarlenna Posted May 26, 2004 #20 Share Posted May 26, 2004 We saw the BRB ex Rotterdam in port at Grand Bahama. It made me very sad to see such a lovely ship in such a desolate condition. Like many great old liners, she is spending her life rusting away. Work like a dog. Live like a pauper. Save all your money. Then Cruise! Crockett Man Posted May 26, 2004 #23 Share Posted May 26, 2004 Just like many of you, The Big Red Boat was our family's first cruise. The characters were in fact Looney Tunes characters, so I think it must have been around the time when Disney was no longer affiliated with Premier. We did do 4 days at Disney World followed by a 3 day cruise. That was still the biggest inside quad my family and I have ever stayed in. I can't believe how small that ship is compared to those I have been on since, but we still had a great time. My children still remember their first cruise. rudder12 Posted March 23, 2007 #24 Share Posted March 23, 2007 I used to be a youth counselor on the Oceanic from 96-97 and then moved up to Assistant Cruise Director and was with the company until it folded in 2000. Micki Dee Posted March 23, 2007 #25 Share Posted March 23, 2007 The BRB (Oceanic) was our 1st cruise and the suite we stayed in wasn't that much bigger than the oceanview cabin we had on the Sovereign, but boy did we think we were big shots! Of course we did have 2 bathrooms. My DD still has great memories from that cruise. I think it'll always be her favorite. Long live the Big Red Boat!
