Upgrade Fairy Lives.........

Hey Auntie B and Uncle P... I hope you guys have a FANTASTIC cruise. I am a bit green with envy. That sounds like such a wonderful cruise. Can't wait for you to come back here and tell us all about it.

Oh.. and I would have done the same thing on the upgrade fairy. I wouldn't have given up my Aft BA for a port mini.

Be safe and have a GREAT time.

Thank you, Terry! We'll be sure to share everything about it, but nowhere near as eloquently as you can! :)

I hope you are feeling better these days! Say hello to Doug for us too!

So you are saying that plenty of people have posted here on CC that they called and got upgraded to a better stateroom at 50 to 60% off of the current price difference? Not doubting you, but in the three or four years I have been a reader of CC I may can think of two or three postings here on the NCL boards and the ones I thinking of did not get the deep discounts you get when the upsell fairy calls the pax. Can you post a link to the postings of these exceptions? I would love to have that info in my pocket to use to them as examples when we call to upgrade and they say we can upgrade, but at the current price difference.

Thank you again, Terry. ;)

Anyone can call for an upgrade. However the "upsell" department greatly frowns upon incoming requests. Offering these bargains is on a "We'll call you" basis.

I don't agree. I called the upsell desk for a Mexican Riviera Cruise and bought up from a BA balcony to an AD suite.

But how much did you pay is the point. You usually don't get the super deals if you call just okay deals. Anyone can buy up, it's the amount you pay to buy up most of us are talking about.

Hey there, Gigi! Nice to see you! Great to hear you are cruising again too.

Thanks for the reminder. Now wouldn't it be appropriate for us to "dress like the Romans do" on the Med cruise? :D

Is Rome ready for you and Uncle Paulie?

We decided this spring would be a good time to get back onboard, literally, and introduce our newest family member to cruising. I think the little guy is going to be spoiled silly and will love it as much as we do! :)

kind of a nice way of saying I'm full of it. You probably figured I wouldn't take the time, but I did. Here are some links from the last few months. If you'd like, I could go back a year or so and find a couple dozen more.

In my experience, and I am only speaking of my experience, I am NOT giving false information, thank you very much. I've also had PCC confirm this. Perhaps those stating so got an upgrade during a sale; aka a good deal. But IMO they were not the upsells of which I speak. :p

First you say "Offering these bargains is on a "We'll call you" basis." Then you say "I've also had PCC confirm this." And now to peg013 who did, in fact call and get an upsell, you are insinuating that she only received a "small upsell" and you were talking about the 50% upsells. So much for your PCC confirmation. And for your entertainment, here are some links to posts on here over the last few months from people who did call and get regular upsells.

I'm sorry you thought I was trying to say something I wasn't, even if it was "said in a nice way". I wanted this information so that I and others would be able to get the deals at a greatly reduced cost. Unfortunately I only had time this morning to read the first give of seven threads, but in those I only saw one posting where they specifically said they called and got 50% off the current price. Thats what I was looking for. I have read many times where people said they called and got their own upsell, but it was never a "great" deal. Most of them were like the one in the thread you have listed where she said she got 20% off. That is common. Hopefully I will find more in the last two threads when I can read them later today. Thanks for taking the time to post those threads.

I called myself, a little less than 2 weeks ago, and was offered 2 upsells at 30% off of what they would have been if I had booked them initially. I was in a mini-suite, and was offered an upsell to an A3 for $3000, an AD for $700-something (sorry I don't remember the exat number, insurance changed it), or a HC AE (which is, in fact smaller than a regular AE, but I didn't find that out until after I booked) for $700-something. These prices are for 2. Since my friend and I would really prefer 2 lowers to a queen bed (I don't really like her THAT much), we took the HC AE. I was happy with a 30% discount. It was certainly better than I could have done if I *didn't* call, and I'm thrilled that we'll be getting the suite perks, which are, if you've never had them, really awesome.

And yes, I wish I had the extra $3000 to go A3. Those Courtyard Villas are heavenly.

So there you go. More than 20%, less than 50%, and I'm happy.

I know what I said and it's in black and white for everyone. :D Oh BTW, we got a 20% upsell on the AB. :p

Good choice Barb. I would choose your cabin over an AF also. As far as the upsells go, NCL is kind of walking a fine line...if you could just call and get a lower price for a Suite while others are paying $1000's more for the same product, it could disuade full price bookings for some to gamble at the prospect. It could turn into an ala Priceline product. Personally, I believe you should not have the option of calling in and then be thrilled if you are the 'chosen one'. It seems much more exciting.

I do remember "back when" the Upsell Fairy did stop all incoming calls because they were simply overwhelmed. It could happen again. For those of you lucky enough to get through to the Upsell Department, while it's still possible, congratulations! I'll just sit back and wait for her to call. Somehow she knows I'll be waiting . . .

Do you have to book directly through NCL to have a chance at getting a call from the upsell fairy? We are past cruisers, but only twice with NCL, though we are both Lattitudes members. I have never booked directly through NCL before. If you book a discounted rate through Casinos @ sea do you forfeit any chance for a call?

Thanks!

B

I did finally get to read the last two threads and yes, there are people who got good deals, but still have not seen postings where someone called in and got the same good deal they would get had they been called by the upsell fairy. Learned something though as it seems some people have saved 20 to 30% when they called in themselves so if we ever feel like we could afford to upgrade with that much discount I will be calling in myself. We usually wouldn't be able to afford to upgrade unless it was the deep discounts offered by the upsell fairy. I KNOW we couldn't afford to upgrade with just a 20 to 30% discount on our next cruise as the next stateroom up from ours is the GV...LOL.

I am not sure how this happened.... I called for an upgrade ready to pay the difference, but was pleasantly suprised by an email that stated I received a complimentary upgade. I went from an II to BB I am so excited!!! I guess you never know if you should call or wait.

Does the Upgrade Fairy only upset you to a suite? asking because we are booked in an oceanview, however am now thinking we are thinking maybe we want a a balcony. is there any chance she will call with a balcony upsell/upgrade? Should we call her? We booked through NCL if that makes a difference.

Thanks for your help

Upsells are not just to suites. People have received upsells to balconies from insides.

I don't know what your motives are with these posts, but if you had read the last two threads in detail you would have seen examples of 50% or more discounts written about in both of them. There was a lady in the second to last link that had her TA call and got an upsell for half of what her TA had quoted to upgrade. In the last post there are several that look to be at least 50% and one of them was a poster who called and got an upsell for $500 when the published upgrade was $1300. What's up, Terry??

Where did I ever say I called and got an upsell? I called and did not get an upsell. I was the one asking whether they really got a true upsell when calling......see my quote of my post above

The upsell fairies are alive, well, and very nice to speak with! We are sailing on the Sun (15 day transatlantic) in 12 days. We were in a BB balcony and were very happy with that cabin. I had been checking the inventory regularly and kept seeing one AF on the stern open. I had my travel agent call and was told that there would not be an upsell on this cabin because it was the last AF open (this was at @20 days out). I called myself when we were 13 days out, was polite, and inquired if the AF could be had as an upsell. I had booked with a TA, so she looked up my reservation, and asked me if I wanted to stay on hold while she contacted my TA. I did, and she came back to me offering the stern AF for 30% of the difference between what I paid in January and what the AF is going for now. I jumped right on it!!!!! The agent was very nice, very professional, didn't seem at all put out at my calling, and offered me a great deal!

So, it can be done and it was easy. Yes, I know luck and timing had a great deal to do with it. Just to let others know that the "upsell department/reassignment desk" people are NOT a bunch of ogres who sit in their offices not wanting to be disturbed.

I would agree with other posters that passengers should not barrage the office with constant calls and requests. I made one call two weeks away from my cruise and was very polite and thankful. I hope others have the same good luck I did.

Good deal, Amy. Glad it worked out for you.

I still consider this an upgrade though. From our experience, the infamous "Upsell Fairy" calls result in far greater savings. Those offered to us have realistically resulted in savings of over 85%. They are the last minute, down to the wire, reassignments of glorious proportions! Personally, since we book what we are satisfied with from the beginning, I'll continue to wait for the calls rather than exert efforts to strike a deal that would not exceed typical expectations. :p

Don't let me stand in the way of anyone getting a good deal. Call away! However, it's evident - through tons of continual posts - that there are painstaking efforts by a small few to "get the word out" and cause just what you stated - "barrage the office with constant calls and requests". By constantly elevating the sensitivity of this matter on a public board like Cruise Critic (or the one found in Google searches), it will only result in hampering a good thing - if the privilege of incoming calls is no longer frowned upon !!!

You did great Amy! I finally got to talk to the department this morning, too. Same cruise as Amy on the NCL Sun (we are roll call buddies), but was told right away that the sailing is now completely sold out. SOMETHING happened to the BB balcony cabin Amy gave up yesterday, but it is no longer available according to the reassignment desk this morning...
