Prohibited items on Carnival ships

Mach,

John only answers posts which meets his blog needs????

I know we have all read other comments today on this topic... But

I find it odd we see other post with the same concern...

http://www.carnival.com/Funville/forums/t/96786.aspx

Hi, Ross and welcome to Cruise Critic.

John doesn't address the posts at the Funville forums. He only addresses those posts on his blog marked 'John, please respond' or something of that nature.

If you reread the section that I quoted from his blog you'll see this:

I know this is a hot topic over on the Cruise Critic boards and my mate Host Mach has informed me that some are accusing me of ignoring the issue or refusing to post comments about it. That is absolutely not true. Unless the post is a personal attack on someone (apart from myself which you are all free to do) the Stephanies will post every comment.

I have known John for a several years... not just as a cruise director but as a friend. I can tell you, despite what others say, that he is an honorable man.

That is one of the points I am addressing as well. The fact of the matter, I fear, is that they have to step very carefully (SLOWLY) into that morass as they receive A LOT of revenue from said group... and talk about a VOCAL bunch. They don't mind voting with their wallets!

We all know the ship would be not only smell better, be "safer", but burns in bedspreads carpets, (etc) must add up! I will say the reduced smoking in the Dream casino was an improvement. Not quite yet to the point of Celebrity's smoke free casinos (which have been fairly crowded anyway), but it's a start. It will take time.

Tom

With all due respect, Tom, we are a VERY small minority of cruisers... about 2% on a typical Carnival ship and would barely make a blip on their financial radar if we ALL vanished.

Out of our 2% only a fairly small portion of us see this as a deal breaker.

I respect your opinion and your position but Carnival has the right to do what they feel is necessary for their passengers and their company. Do I agree with it? No. Will I continue to sail with Carnival in light of the changes (what ever they end up being...)? Yes.

my girl wants to know if she can bring her hair straightner? so far we're getting conflicting answers

Yes. Curling irons (a straightener is pretty much the same, yes???) are permitted...

:)

I fully realize that only a portion of the general public, and CC'ers are a subset of that group, would consider this important enough to them to alter their plans. We all do what we feel we must, and Carnival will do what they "must" as well.

John, and I say this in regard to your previous post, it one of Carnival's best assets. It's rare to have an individual that functions as a corporation/public bridge as effectively as he does!

Thanks Mach for all your work contacting John (and hopefully the Carnival big wigs) and getting our feelings to him concerning this. I understand if this is a fire issue with questionable power strips. When it is all said and done, it is their cruise ships and they have to make tough decisions. I just wish that they would listen to their customers who use their services. I have heard many great ideas come out of just this forum that they need to hear.

  • Offer Carnival power strips installed by the room stewards for a rental fee of $5 for the week. The stewards would monitor them for fraying or other problems... PROBLEM SOLVED.
  • Offer converters for the other 220W outlet in the room that would give every main room at least two outlets. This convertor could even have an extension cord of some length out of it for devices that have large "plugs".
  • Most people now bring at least a digital camera and/or video camera on a cruise. Some people enjoy having their iPod/mp3 player and also a computer or cell phone along. All these things need to be charged and most of the time this happens at night. This doesn't even include children's devices like PSPs, Nintendo DS, and other handheld devices that most kids wish to enjoy at times. They might investigate the charging pads that act universally with many devices. Again, they could charge a nominal fee to do this in a room and they would be in control.

I would appreciate if you would pass the thoughts you feel best along to John and others. I was another person that was cut by the moderator on John's blog. It was about this subject, but I also had some heartfelt words for John about missing him on the Splendor on our cruise coming up. I would have loved to introduce my little daughter to him.

Thanks for all your work on this and keeping our friends at Carnival in the loop. It was nice to see that John linked this thread on his page so others can see what we, the cruising public, is thinking.

Keep up the good work! Thanks also for your recommendations on Splendor. I can't wait. I will pass along your greetings to Goose.

Ted

Hi, Ted...

Sadly, this is a very sticky issue for some folks and the only thing that I can do is echo your sentiments.

The current review of the prohibited items list is in response to requests and concerns forwarded from here.

A few weeks ago I met with John on the Carnival Conquest and discussed this topic at length. I posted the information he offered here and that included the fact that power strips with surge protectors are available from Guest Services. I don't know how many are on each ship but I suggested that they need to stock up.

John feels that the final list will be ready some time tomorrow. Please note the word 'final.'

Have a wonderful time on the Splendor. She's a lovely ship.

Tom... I really don't appreciate that comment...

You are kidding ... right?

If you enjoy John's ongoing FRENCH comments (I do, and I know he means no harm), then you must understand that it was made in jest! There is a, likely unsupported, belief that Italian things (some cars) require a lot of expensive maintenance to keep running.

JUST IN FUN! ;)

Good for you, but you're not everybody.

Not everybody is on vacation on a cruise.

Not everybody can leave work behind even if they are on vacation on a cruise.

Even ppl who are completely on vacation like to take computers to upload their photos to their hard drive(s), use the Internet for fun and/or to keep in touch with friends/family back home, listen to music, watch movies on the plane, etc.

That's too bad that you resent somebody who might have the use of a cell phone while on a cruise just because you don't want to use yours. They might have a business to run, a sick close friend or family member, children left behind, a beloved pet left behind, etc. They might not even use it for calls, but for an alarm clock, the Internet, listening to music, and other apps.

Not everybody can afford to book a balcony. Also, Carnival asks ppl not to leave the balcony doors open.

Not all cameras take AA/AAA-type batteries. Most (especially DSLRs) take semi-expensive ($50+) rechargeables. I bring three cameras with me that all take rechargeables. (I don't know if any of the chargers fit the one cabin wall plug, as I've had a power strip on both my cruises. I have four batteries to charge.) That's nice that your little pocket P&S takes disposable batteries, but not everybody uses one of those even if they're just on vacation.

Again, not everybody is on vacation or a full vacation on a cruise. That's great if you are/can be! And many of the above things can be used on a full vacation (who doesn't want to take photos of their trip even just for fun?!). Who said just because you have a camera, laptop, etc. that you're not enjoying your friends and family?

Well said. Thank you.

Hopefully, this list will contain information on white noise machines. I don't think they really understand what they do and how much power they DON'T draw. They are no more a fire hazard than charging a battery.

But I am sure the list will NOT contain this information. I have called several times and every single time, the person on the other end of the line has NO idea what I am talking about.

I agree. I am an extremely light sleeper. I do my part by always booking a cabin sandwiched between cabin floors, but, let's face it, the walls are paper thin. I seriously can't sleep without a white noise machine. It goes with me everywhere. Ask my high school friends. I showed up at slumber parties with my white noise machine.:D We all have issues. That's mine.

And miraculously I haven't burned the house down yet with it.

Then this (recently posted by a CC'er after sailing on the Glory) was in error?

Tom.. is this for real??? You have got to be kidding me! If they take away my curling iron, I am in deep trouble as my hair is very thin and very straight! Without being able to curl it, I look like a sick wet dog!! If Carnival truly is taking away our curling irons (and knowing this... maybe hot rollers, etc..), then maybe it's time to move away from them and check out other cruise lines. Unbelievable!!

Here is a link to the thread (not kidding): LINK

I think the problem is that different ships/ports/scanners are interpreting the new guidelines differently... so, problem #1 is the individual's interpretation, and problem #2 is that this is a gray area.

I am told a CURLING TONG is the same as a CURLING IRON...

The power/scope of what is on the INTERNET can work VERY fast -- both for and against causes!

I agree often common when a new memo comes around to all the different ships that causes inconsistant follow through of a new guidline.

Sailing in 60 days on Valor...

Is there any acceptable substitute for power cords like multi-ended adapters?

Can ladies buy curling irons at first Port of Call?

Do I understand that CC will be hearing from CCL today re. clarification of this issue?

Thanks,

Mike

I gave the WRONG link... :o

Here is the correct CURLING IRON thread link... then go to post #89 for the scanned Carnival form, also it was on the DREAM, not the Glory. That thread is now closed.

No, not really... This is not a Cruise Critic issue. It's an ongoing effort to clarify Carnival's position on these items between John Heald and myself. Cruise Critic isn't involved in any way.

we leave this Sunday on the Glory too and not having a difinitive answer is tough. my girl is going to pack her straightner but if it's taken away, this will most likely be are last curise w/ Carinval.

taking away people's booze i understand, don't like it, but i get it and can live with it. but things like curling irons/straighteners and mini fans effect people's looks and comfort which may lead to them not enjoying the week as much as they should on vacation

Good luck - even if they are looking for it, they probably won't find it. :)

From one who had hers taken from the checked luggage, I'd put it in the carry on, they probably won't cause a fuss in public. :)

I have managed to complete something like 15 cruises without a power strip. I don't bring a computer, I am on vacation, I don't use a cell phone onboard so the charge is still 100% when I get on shore at my airport, and by the way I resent those that do use them:rolleyes:. There is a hair dryer in the room and if you use a large enough brush you can make your hair flat with them. If you need air at night, book a balcony and leave the door open.

Ok, so all you need to do now is recharge your batteries for the camera you will be using. And you could even do away with that if you bring enough batteries with you.

Of course those with medical needs, you are still allowed to bring your power strips so you are good to go!:D

A vacation is suppose to be a time away from home. Why do you need to bring it all with you? Enjoy your family and friends instead!

So why are you even reading a thread about Power Strips ?

Bully for you if you don't need one, but it's fairly obvious from this thread that many people do.

BTW, you're not supposed to leave your balcony door open.

I am the Dream cruiser who posted the copy of the letter that I received when YES! my curling iron was confiscated from my checked luggage. Gah! I can't believe that some people still think that I've made this up - or took the time to post a bogus letter! Maybe I was the only fricking one on the whole ship who had this happen? But it did happen!

I gotta tell you. You guys stir the pot more than a lifetime of grandmas cooking. Go back to the hotels if you don't like it. Have all the power you want.

At least most hotels give FREE internet! :D

Yep - balcony door = HIGH humidity (and not cool). I suppose if you brought a DEHUMIDIFIER it might help... but then again, that is definitely a "household appliance"! ;)

Thanks for all of your info, Mach, it is appreciated! I have oxygen, a scooter and a cpap. I also carry my medical OK from the Dr. with me. Never ever have I had a problem. I use my power strip, and when I cruised with a friend who had Diabetes, there was a mini fridge placed in the room by CCL. If your info is sent in, you will have no problem. I have cruised with CCL over 20 times, healthy and not, and never had anything confiscated. I don't take my own coffee pot as that's what room service is for (g). I knew someone who did, byw, and she was upset that it was taken from her. She picked it up on the way home, but she was still upset. Didn't want to 'wait for coffee'...yep, that's what she said

I figure I can go anywhere in the world with my med supplies, a toothbrush and CCL. And I'm doin' it...
