Bakincakes Posted May 13, 2010 #76 Share Posted May 13, 2010 The first time that our cruise ship was sailing around Cuba my sister and I were on our balcony trying to see is we could see any part of Cuba. She had night binoculars and I had regular ones. It was pitch black dark out, and the waves were so high that we were getting sprayed on our ninth deck balcony. All of a sudden my sister could see tiny little lights from a small "boat" bobbing up and down in the water. If it wasn't for the night binoculars we never would have seen it. It looked like someone was in serious trouble the way the lights would come up and then completely disappear under the waves. So while she kept watch I went into the hall way to see if I could find someone to help us. I saw our cabin attendant and ask her to come see and then asked her if she knew who could we contact so we could get help for someone who might be in trouble. She laughed told us that it happens all the time and that we "were" sailing around Cuba. I often wonder if whoever it was, was able to found the safe haven they were looking for. I wonder what the "rules" are about those small boats from Cuba? At what point does a ship have to stop and help the occupants?
Rare BecciBoo Posted May 13, 2010 #77 Share Posted May 13, 2010 Every time we've sailed past there, you could see land in the distance so we were definitely within the 25 mile limit for most countries...so probably they wouldn't stop near there. Too many boats just out fishing. I think that applies to the high seas and any S.O.S. given. Just my guess. Here's a pdf file I found http://www.cwsl.edu/content/journals/Severance.pdf Doesn't mention border limitations, etc. So it seems to hinge on whether they are in distress or have indicated an SOS situation and are in danger of being 'lost at sea'. Rare BillOh Posted May 13, 2010 #78 Share Posted May 13, 2010 Just check out the Cruise Photos thread. And I could stare at just the water for hours. If I wasn't on my balcony I would've missed this: Obviously taken in tropical waters still north of the equator. A lot of people don't realize the moon in places in the moderate climates of the southern hemisphere appears upside down to the way us northerners see it. What I think is the sea of Tranquility in this picture is right at 3 o'clock and it closer to 1 o'clock here in Ohio. Sorry, Astronomy nerd here. Bakincakes Posted May 13, 2010 #79 Share Posted May 13, 2010 Ah. Always wondered that as we passed by Cuba..I've always looked for boats while sitting on the balcony. And always as we leave Haiti, now that I think about it.
Rare BecciBoo Posted May 13, 2010 #80 Share Posted May 13, 2010 Yep, we were in Galveston just docking. When I saw it, I was in a panic to get a pic and didn't realize until we downloaded the chip that it was this good a photo. Have never seen the moon that color before. cruisin' 4 fun Posted May 13, 2010 #81 Share Posted May 13, 2010 I wasn't on a balcony but by the windows in the windjammer on the Monarch this past March. We were still in Port Canaveral had just boarded and went for lunch. Sitting looking out at the water and there was a shark swimming right next to the ship. He stayed for 10 minutes or so then just followed down the ship and was gone. Very cool. I have a pic but forgot I had a zoom on my camera so it's really hard to see. Submariner Posted May 13, 2010 #83 Share Posted May 13, 2010 Okay, I didnt want to write this here in this thread as it is kind of ..crude. But hey, what the hell. We were all in the casino one late night on the Carnival Miracle when my wife's sister excused herself to her room complaining of a headache. We remained behind. Anyway, the next day, she told us that she opened the balcony to get a breath of fresh air and gaze at the nightsky when she noticed some 'sounds' and movement in an adjourning cabin. How do I put this.... the guy was out on his balcony - with his pet monkey. It appears that this monkey was a tad naughty - as this guy was constantly , er, spanking it repeatedly. My sister-in-law gave a bit of a yelp - which scared him and her back in the room. We laughed like crazy over breakfast the next day when she told this ..:D Those balconies arent as private as you think!!

Robin7 Posted May 15, 2010 #96 Share Posted May 15, 2010 The Carnival Valor rescued some Mexican fishermen. Then the Mexican Coast Guard came and got them. This was out of Cozumel last September.
