And of course, the worst are people who smuggle their 2 12-packs of some kind of soda the ship doesn't carry. Maybe they shouldn't cruise either, since they are breaking the rules by carrying on an extra 12-pack and depriving the ship of revenue by not buying their soda.

I'm with ava girl - who really cares?

Why would ANYONE still smuggle booze when they can buy a bottle of Grey Goose for $60 and not have to break the rules?
uh... cause people believe they are special snowflakes and rules dont apply to them?
the fact that Carnival has BV for liquor purchases (and its very reasonable IMHO) should end the booze smuggling discussion once and for all.

Why do you care? Do you lose sleep over booze smuggling? Do booze smugglers pay your mortgage? Feed you and your spouse? Pay your car insurance? Seasoned cruisers on this board have already said that cruise prices have went down the last 15 yrs or so.. It is not affecting what you pay per cruise.. Do you track down and haggle everyone you see speeding in a car? Have you ever went over the speed limit yourself? Cut in a line, paid a bill late? Have you ever commited a sin? What do you care unless it affects you personally?

You are correct. A rule is a rule and if enforced should pertain to everyone. thats why you should care.
I know that many will disagree with me, but I'm actually happy that Carnival (and other cruise lines) are finally enforcing this rule.

Smuggling alcohol onboard means less revenue for the cruise line. Less revenue means spreading the cost among all passengers. So the passengers that DO follow the rules end up indirectly paying the tab of those trying to save a buck.
I am a big believer in the 80/20 rule.

If you completely take away all booze smuggling. (like you get thrown off the ship with no refund if you TRY to smuggle anything) that would affect maybe 20% of the cruisers, and the other 80% would benefit in the long run with reduced drink prices, etc,

The problem here is there are alot of the 20 percenters here posting erroneous information to stir up trouble and to cause controversy.

Conduct a poll on these boards.. And again, ask the seasoned cruisers if the prices of cruises have went up or down in the past 15 years.. You will get your answer..
I am more worried about people smuggling missing children, or child porn or illegal drugs onto the ship then I am my fellow cruiser trying to pull a towel over the cruise lines Billion dollar eyes..
Again, I am a Bon Voyage purchaser, the cruise lines will make more money from the smuggler that drinks, then the non drinker on a ship..
I don't care if you hide womens underware in your luggage, it is none of my bisiness what you do or how you chose to spend your money...;)

First of all, the cruise prices over the last 15 years going up or down has to do with about 1000 different factors. I bet "booze smuggling" is not in the top 500.

Secondly, if you were REALLY concerned with "people smuggling missing children, or child porn or illegal drugs onto the ship " then you would realize that the embarkation staff is SOOOO consumed with booze smuggling that it takes up all their time and attention, and the other things may just slip by them.

Case in point:
When the airlines first enacted the 3oz rule (or whatever it is) for fluids, that consumed all their focus. I left a 5" knife in my carry on bag (from a mountain biking trip months ago) and they snagged my 5oz cologne but let the friggin knife go through.

I found it while I was on the plane already in the air. (Scared the crap out of me. I thought I would go to jail over it!!)

Sometimes, you actually ARE part of the problem and you just don't know it yet.

I just read an article the other night that said cruising use to be for the well to do traveler.. That is not the case anymore.. MIddle class America take 1 if not more cruises a year..
A very seasoned cruiser on this board just stated she has been smuggling since 1999 and she has yet to see prices increase..
Travelers who have been sailing much longer stated the same thing..Smugglers and Non smugglers alike..
I see your point, to a point. We all have to pay for someone elses short comings. I have never been in a car accident in my life (knock on wood) but I bet ya I have paid for a ton of other accidents with the increases yearly in my premiums... I pay higher for clothing with all of the people who steal clothes from a store.. What am I gonna do about it, freak out and place blame.. It is what it is dude..
The same cruise lines let the smugglers right onboard after they have caught them, why, because they know they are going to spend a ton of money drinking..
Why do I care if someone smuggles.. ??

You should if it is against the "rules". Me having womens underwear, mens underwear or even dirty underwear in my luggage is not agaisnt any rule that I know of.

My question would be WHY break the rule if you know it is in place? Do you think they make the rules just to put some ink on paper?

You would venture to guess that the rule is there for some reason. Just from reading these threads the last month or so it looks like people abundantly took advantage of the situation. Not counting possibly the "drunks" on board and Carnival is finally taking a stand and or placing stiffer restrictions and penalties.

There are to many "variables" to say why people mind. I mind because rules are in place for a reason. If you blatantly disregard those rules you should be held accountable under whatever "punishment" devised.

Then to come to a place like this and openly "flaunt" it is just icing on the cake.

I would absolutely agree with you if ONLY CCL would do that - I have every confidence that CCL would NOT drop prices of booze - this is one of their life lines. Many would be more than willing NOT to smuggle if only booze was more resonable. $18.00 for a bucket of beer (4) give me a break.
Your a couple of years behind on your drink prices. Buckets of beer are ~$21.00 plus tip and a single 16oz Bud is $6.61 including tip.
UM...NOPE...Sorry Sac...these ARE the prices from our cruise on the CARNIVAL DREAM 4/17 -4/24/10!!! Don't know what ship YOU cruised on that charged YOU those prices!!!

Considering that most of Carnivals cruisers say that alcohol is the number one profit for them, I would say that booze smuggling is a factor, not the only but a huge factor in profits.. Read the whole thread here and you will see that..
I am not at liberty to enforce anything that the cruise lines employees or the cruise line itself check on before a cruise sets sale..
I am not the problem of anything as I have never smuggled anything onto a ship or an airplane...
I am just not worried or obsess much about it as you do.. ;)

A single beer on the Splendor during that exact same week was 5.25 before the 15 percent was added. Not bad at all really. A 12 ounce coors light in most vegas strip hotels will cost you more than that. I thought that Jamison's at 5.75 was a great deal also, especially how large the pour was.

I think these same people would rob banks (if they thought they could get away with it)

NO, booze smuggling does not = robbing banks

what it shows is there is a large portion of people that would lie, cheat, and steal as long as the punishment was light, without regard for anyone else.
What a shame.

Read the whole thread dude, you just jumped in here on the last 2 pages.. I agree that people look like morons flaunting it... 100%..

Have you ever not broken a rule? Really? I just chose to not throw judgement against people as easily as others.. I am not without sin in my life so why would I?
"He who is without sin may cast the first stone".. I love that saying.. It makes a ton of sense, and if more people would live like that, less judgement on others would be passed..

According to a CLIA study January 2010 only 20% of Americans have ever been on a cruise. So I would not say middle class America take one or more cruises per year.

May look like it on here but cruise critic is not everyone, probably less than 1% of the population on any given cruise.
