Jean Skirt OK?

MizzCard

Recommended Posts

We'll have 5 casual nights, and a jean skirt with a nice blouse is just an option for one night. I do have plenty of other choices, I'm just looking for comfort.

This will be my third cruise and have never wore a jean skirt to dinner, can't really recall if I've ever seen other ladies wearing them either, but I could start a trend here.

If I offend some one, it'll definitely be because of something I said, not from what I'm wearing

People are amazing. I can't get over how arrogant some people are as to try and enforce rules on other people that don't even exsist. If Royal Caribbean doesn't care if she wears a jean skirt, then who the h#!! are you??? Maybe when you grow up and have your own cruise line, you can make all the rules. Until then, you're just another one of us. Get over yourself!!

OK, my advise to the poster of this thread is: next time refer to it as a "denim skirt" (the pc version will be less offensive it appears LOL)

I am not aware of any rules on what type of material is allowed in the dinning room on casual night. It's a skirt wear it! Skorts are allowed in. THAT looks more like shorts and shorts aren't allowed in apparently. I am fine with wearing a skirt (denim) for casual nights.

Okay Robyn I'm with you a newbie and getting kinda scared as to what to where when and where. I have a long Burgany gown for one formal night and an ankle Black dress for the second.Other than that I am confused. My sister and I are on Vision of the Seas April 03 and I am wondering what to wear the rest of the time in the dining room. I have a few skirts that I was thinking of wearing with a nice t-shirt type top! Is this okay. They are nice fancy t-shirts with sequins and lace. Hmmm Now i'm thinking I have to go shopping but want to save my money for on ship!!!Does this sound okay its a mix and match thing!!

mlroberts23: Do not go spend your precious "fun" money on new clothes! What you are describing sounds lovely for formal night and absolutely acceptable for casual nights. You will be dressed just right.

As for denim/jeans, I have heard rumors that many people wear denim to casual night dinners on cooler cruises (Alaska, Canada). For the Caribbean, I go with lighter fabrics. OTOH, the dining room can get a bit chilly for some people, so heavier fabrics are entirely up to the wearer. I've seen some lovely denim/jean skirts. Put it together with a nice top, what's the problem?

A Jean/Denim is fine like others have said with a nice top and cute sandals. On my first cruise I would wear all nice sundresses..nice ones and found it to be too dressy for the night time party so to save me money and space in my luggage;) I now where some sundresses (besides the nice dresses for capt. and semi) but now where nice tops with skirts..If I wear a not so dressy skirt..I really dress it up with a nice shirt/sandals and plenty of jewerly and have never felt or looked underdressed...Have you people seen what people wear to dinner at times:eek: ...compared to them a Jean/Denim skirt is like a million dollar dress:) ..

Wear what is comfortable for you...remember you are on vacation to enjoy.....;)

As the entire board knows by now, I have yet to take my first cruise...which by the way I might add is THIS Sunday! I have read opinions on various subjects and have taken the advice of seasoned cruisers to heart.

Happy Cruising :)

Robyn, you'll love it! We took our first cruise on our honeymoon in 1986 for seven days in the Eastern Caribbean on Norwegian Cruise Line's Southward. We went into it blind and had no idea what to expect, and it still remains one of the most memorable cruises we've taken. I was so ignorant that I went into the casino, gave the cashier five dollars and asked for chips. She gave me one red chip, and I pointed out that I had given her a five-dollar bill. I was chagrined when she said the minimum chip was $5.00. My new bride made it worse by giggling at my embarrassment. Now, I'm probably spoiled and definitely would prefer Celebrity or Royal Caribbean to Norwegian, but that first cruise will always be in my fond memories. We're booked for our tenth cruise in July to the Greek Isles and Turkey on the Brilliance of the Seas and I know we'll love it, too. We've never had a bad cruise, and hopefully never will. I really feel that most of the posts complaining about how terrible their cruise was, or the service, or the ports, or whatever, are by people who just aren't capable of letting themselves enjoy something without finding fault. Life is too short to be that negative. A cruise... any cruise... is a wonderful experience, if you have a positive attitude and just go with the flow... and it's an amazingly enjoyable and relaxing flow. I hope you have a great, amazing, fantastic, incredible trip!

While I may not agree with your position on whether or not a denim skirt is acceptable attire in the dining room on casual night, I do envy your cruising choices. For now our budget dictates that we only cruise from ports we can drive to, but a cruise in the Greek Isles is on my dream cruise list. I'll definitely be looking forward to a report when you return!

Allen,

Thanks for your good wishes!

There have been few times when I wasn't sure this board was the place for me....but it is posts like yours and so many others ( you all know who you are ;) ) that keeps me coming back.

I have had some good laughs on here ( and some good cry's too!) now I have to take the best of everything I've learned and bring it with me on the Radiance this Sunday :)

Thanks again!

I am going to hear about this for sure, but here i go. " And if you have the legs for it- at least 6 inches ABOVE the knee!!"

LOL! I've been on two cruises and didn't see many people who had "the legs for it" but I sure do! ;) Wasn't going to wear my jean skirt to dinner but maybe I will now...

Hi mtd,

Actually, I never gave MY opinion about the jeans skirt. I was pointing out to a previous poster what I thought was the general response to the OP's question. I personally would not have a problem with the jeans skirt on casual nights. I might raise an eyebrow on formal nights, though.

Thanks for the compliment on our cruises. I was never able to cruise until I was 45, and I'm still trying to make up for lost time. :) On our previous Mediterranean cruise we were on the Legend of the Seas and saw Spain, the French Riviera, Italy (including Venice) and Dubrovnik, Croatia. We'll be repeating some of those ports this time, but are very, very excited about Greece and Turkey. Out of all our cruises, my wife still remembers Venice and Capri as being her favorite ports. Last summer we were in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany, Estonia, and St. Petersburg, Russia, and they were great, but there is something just so very special about the Mediterranean. I hope you can add this area to your itineraries in the very near future. You'll love it! I have to say, though, that I've loved every cruise I've ever been on. It's the only way to go!

I know most feel that formal night is "formal night", and I for one dress accordingly. I've seen women dressed like Scarlet O'Hara or a Maid of Honor at a wedding. That's fine for them...but for me, a nice long evening dress is my choice. Something not only flattering but comfortable. I've attended my share of formal balls and have found through the years the women are dressing more casually. Look at what women are wearing on the red carpet for these awards (considered formal/black tie) I'm certain someone would find their attire quite offensive.

The guys have it easy. They wear the same tux/suit for both formal nights. How many of us women will wear the same dress for both formal nights?? Not me!

Although the cruise line encourages us to stay in our formal attire for the rest of the evening, I'm back to my cabin changing into something more casual for the casino and club.

In my opinion, the only difference between Khaki and denim/jean is the color. I'm just a very "casual' person by nature.

Here's another can of worms...who finds thongs at the pool offensive? Envious for me

I have read many of these attire discussion threads and have been apprehensive about commenting as things seem to get nasty very quickly. But, I was sitting here thinking if I remember seeing denim in the dining room on some nights (besides me who was wearing a cute denim knee length skirt with nice top and cute heeled open- toed shoes) and couldn't remember. Then I realized it was probably because I was HAVING A GOOD TIME WITH THE THINGS THAT MATTER. Let me add that if a knee length denim skirt is ok for my job in a religious school, I think that it is more than ok for a fun vacation.

Have a great time!:)

Oh, as for the thongs-or I prefer the term "banana hammock;) " that is probably better off on an adult only setting. But maybe I am getting old?

I totally agree! Denim or not, the point is you are on VACATION! Have a blast.

Personally, I am less concerned with how everyone dresses at the table than I am with how everyone acts at the table. Hate it when everyone is snooty, snitty, and into themselves and only themselves. I like to eat with fun people (not loud, rude, and obnoxious -- just fun!). :D

Oy. I'm planning on wearing a jean skirt for our first casual dinner. I figure if people are offended by what I'm wearing in the dining room then watch out at the bar. :D

Haha!! That's exactly how I feel!!! If a long black skirt and sequin top is all that offensive, then maybe I should just wear the micro mini with the fishnets and the stilettos. :D

Please correct me if I am mistaken, but don't most cruise lines allow a relaxed dress code for the first night in case everyone doesn't get their luggage in time? If this is the case, the denim skirt would not be any trouble. It is amazing how you can jazz up a nice long denim skirt with a nice top, dress shoes or boots, and wearing the right jewelry. I'm not getting the impression that the OP is going to wear a denim skirt with a t-shirt and tennis shoes:)

I wore a long denim skirt with a lightweight sweater and boots on our last cruise. I must say I looked much better than the table of drunks who wore their shorts to the dining room every night:p

If you still have doubts, you could go by the dining room when you board and ask the staff. I am sure they have seen much worse.

ON our second cruise we didn't get our luggage until late that evening. I wore what I traveled 9 hours in. Denim jeans, sneakers and a short sleeved shirt. I looked like hell and felt awful about it. The great family we sat with didn't mind and as a matter of fact we planned our third cruise and this great family followed suit and went on the cruise with us this past December. :D
