A second walking tour of Amsterdam

We'll be in town Nov 26-Dec 2. Are there Christmas markets in Amsterdam? I haven't been able to find any mention online. I know I visited one in Belgium, but cannot remember Amsterdam.....

I don't know about Amsterdam, but there will be a small one in Rotterdam. The big Christmas market will be in Valkenburg which is near Maastrich in the southern part of the Netherlands.

I spent Carnaval in Maastricht once. That was fun:p Guess we'll have to be satisfied with the multitudes of "regular" markets in Amsterdam, since it appears we'll be too early for Christmas markets. I'm going to try to walk my jet lag off the day we arrive and get over to the flower market so we can have something for our apartment.

Yes, there's a combo ticket you can get with the Spido tour and access to the maritime museum in Rotterdam. Sadly in the off season, only the short harbor tour is available- my husband is very depressed, as he could gladly spend the entire day in the harbor looking at things:D

I have been loving (and printing!) these walking tour suggestions - we're going to Amsterdam for vacation in November. I wonder if you have listed any specific weather/timing related caveats? Or should we carry on with our plan to bundle up and head out regardless?

 

I don't know if you are aware that the seven walking tours are now all in pdf format. I have taken out a lot of the pictures to make the file shorter and it should take a bit less time to open them.

You can rent a boat from the museum. That wil cost 300,- excl. VAT for 2 hours and if possible we could try to find a guided to travel with you. Or you could look at Rederij Thor they have eveningtours wit food and such things but they will not tell you a lot about the harbour. You also have the splashtours. You go with a bus into the water – but their tour is shorter than the spido.

You can also go with a bus to futureland where we build a new peace of harbour for Rotterdam. Maybe that is the best idee for you.

I think the tour to Maasvlakte is the least interesting, you will tour to/around a large commercial area of the port.

The regular Spido tours of about 1 hour are nice and can easily be combined with a visit to the Maritime museum. The Spido tours sail even in off-season.

A nice place to visit is the Hotel New York, which is next to the Rotterdam terminal. Hotel New York used the be the old headoffice of Holland America Line. To get there simply walk across the big white Erasmusbrug, or take one of the watercabs.

Opstapplaatsen= places to get on the watertaxi.

Tarieven= rates (as you see there are 2 different rates).

One is to/from hotel New York to Leuvehaven,

You might also note that the taxi service includes trips to Kinderdijk with all its windmills.

On our Panama Canal cruise, he photographed all the tugboats and ahead of time he had printed out information on every tug that works the canal - so he'd take a photo, see what the name was, and look it up in his reference materials. So he loves the commercial side of maritime business!

OK, one last suggestion. Since your husband has this special interest, the harbor master of the Rotterdam port might be able to help. Perhaps a visit, or better, a tour. Who knows!!!

 

We went to the northern part of Scotland on a cruise ship this summer. I contacted the harbor master at the port where we were to dock. He provided me with tons of suggestions about what and where to go and sightsee. I grant you, that the port was tiny by comparison with Rotterdam. I have started to put together a second walking tour of Amsterdam and I would like suggestions about additional attractions, etc. We will be leaving shortly for a trip to Europe and Amsterdam will be part of this. So, I intend to do the walking tour I came up with and should have more input in a couple months.

Keep in mind that the total length of this walk is less than three miles. So there is plenty of room for some expansion, unless you like to spend extra time at the museums.

Really? You sound persimistic or perhaps you missed the significance of this wonderful little oasis in the middle of old Amsterdam. It has charm, history and some of the oldest houses in the city. The people who lived here were very special, in my opinion.

 

I just finished the second walking tour of Amsterdam and it has some pictures of the Begijnhof plus several museums that are worth considering along the way. It does not include the Red Light district and is maybe a bit more oriented towards the 'newer' and fun parts of Amsterdam that you can explore.
