Hubby wanted me to inquire about this from you all.......

we're sailing on the Fantasy in 60 days (not that I'm counting or anything) and hubby wants to stock up on liquor when we're in the Bahamas, namely rum.

Anyone have pointers on who has the best deals?

And we will be stopping in both Freeport and Nassau.

Thanks!

I live in Texas, so we can only bring back 1 liter pp, so I dont pay much attention. I buy something onboard that I cant get at home like Sheridans.

Freeport you wouldnt be near any liquor sales that I can remember. Nassau will have more stores at least near the port.

Your duty-free allowance will be 1 liter per person.

As far as prices go, the shop aboard ship will price-match any deal you find ashore.

140^ Tortuga Rum would be my choice, unless you can find Jack Iron.

That's interesting.

How do they know what the price you find is to match?

Seems like we used to buy 4 or 5 bottles to take back home with us.

Did they change the amt you can take back duty-freee from what it used to be?

I think I'm going on the same cruise....

The rules are one bottle per person unless you buy products in the USVI's that are produced there....Then you can bring back five....One of which can be from anywhere....It is in Carnival's site someplace....

I understand you can bring back as much as you want (except for Texas) as long as you pay the duty on it.....;)

We just got off Fantasy in June. For Freeport we took a shuttle to Lucaya and across the street from the casino there are several shops. We went into the first one we saw and purchased a liter of Appleton for around $12.00. We were looking for Bacardi but this store didnt have any. However, we saw another liquor store a few feet down that DID have Bacardi. We brought along a water bottle that held the entire amount and carried it down to the beach.

In Nassau we had an excursion so I cant give you any insight on that one. :o

If you are interested in our review with pics here is a link. We did Key West, Freeport and Nassau. Lots of pics. Freeport starts on page 4.

Check the prices on board before you get off so you know what a "good" price is. You'll also want to know if the ship sells what you're looking for. If you see something better on land, take a digital picture. The ship will match the price and they'll accept a digital picture, even if it is from your phone.

You can bring in a ltr duty free from anywhere except US territory. You can take a gallon duty free from US territories and an extra bottle if it is produced and purchased in the USVI. You can bring as much as you want (unless your state limits you) as long as you pay duty on the excess.

Remember that you cannot carry your booze on a plane. Unless you pour it in 3oz bottles and put those in a 1 qt bag.

$12 for Appleton's is pretty good. You may see a special on Cruzan on the ship, maybe 3 bottles for $27.

The best places I've found to purchase alcohol is St Thomas, St Maarten and Cozumel. I've gotten Jameson for around 14 and Kahlua for around 9. DW likes rum and coke and doesn't care about brands. You can get rum in St Thomas for around $3 a liter.

I think the OP is only going to Nassau and Freeport, and wanted to know which was better.

Tough one, since both are Bahamas to me, not much difference except Freeport you would have to cab it to some place to buy liquor.

I just returned from Freeport a few weeks ago. I took a taxi to Port Lucaya and walked around the shops. I found two liquor shops, but no deals to be found. The bottles were covered in dust.

Went to Nassau, last summer on the Glory. I remember finding a bigger selection there.

Happy Cruising
