My family wants to go all out for formal night

Hi-

My family is taking their first cruise ever in August on Monarch of the seas. We're all really excited, but I've been extremely surprised that they all really want to dress up on formal night. We recently had a number of weddings/military balls so both my sons have their own tuxes (10 and 18) as well as my husband. They want to go all out. My daughter (14) and I will be wearing long dresses. Are we going to look totally out of place being so dressed up on a 4 night cruise? I understand that on longer cruises people tend to dress up more, but will we look over dressed or does it even matter? We're also looking forward to having a family photo done while dressed up.

Thanks-

Kaye

We to go all out with daughter in gown, son is tux, me in a gown and DH in his tux. While not everyone will be so dressed up, you will look great as a group and not look out of place as there will be others equally as dressed up. It is great for a family picture. You will be sure to receive lots of positive feedback from others

If you dress formally on formal night, then you're dressed appropriately.

If there are others that are underdressed, or dressed in what some people call "Can I get away with this?" attire, that's their choice.

When you're soaring with the eagles, don't let the turkeys get you down.

You'll all look fabulous, and you'll have wonderful photos to capture the moments. Enjoy your cruise.

I agree with what everyone is saying. There are so few times in life that qualify for a formal setting of celebration. Don't miss this one!

BTW - my dear husband bought a tux for our trip - just because we plan to cruise many times over ... formally.

Thanks for all the feedback-

Another question. I've been reading on the boards and it seems that a number of people change after their formal dinner. Why? It seems after putting all that effort into looking nice it would be fun to go to the casino or clubs and hang out for a while. As you have said, it's not often you get to have a formal night unless it's a wedding, New Years or a Military Ball. Just curious.

Though I don't do it, I imagine people do it because they never really wanted to dress up in the first place, they aren't "comfortable" in the clothing they wore to dinner. When my husband and I dress for dinner, we wear the clothing all evening, or at least until we're back on our own balcony. I do admit, on occasion, to taking my heels off while using the stairs:p

I think you and your family will look lovely and the pictures will be fabulous. And you might inspire some other families to dress up for their next cruise;)

I'm glad to know that we won't be the only ones. Sometimes reading the boards I think you get a very slanted view and I was starting to get worried. We feel pretty comfortable in more formal wear. My DH has to wear suits daily for work (though he does hate a tie...doesn't like a "noose" around his neck) and I often wear dresses and heels. I'm looking forward to our fancy evening.

My husband loves to dress for the opposite reason - he owns a manufacturing company & is a property manager, so he spends his days getting dirty in work clothes, so on vacation he likes to be dapper:D Don't care why, just that he looks so handsome in a tuxedo!

Hello -- I second Jane110's sentiments. We will be in full formal wear and I just love it. DH looks great in his tux and I don't wear dresses at home at all, so a formal long dress gets as much wear on cruises as a short, plain (church-y) dress would.

Love all the Eagles!!

1. So many gowns so little time to wear all of them

2. high heels on a moving ship can be tiring

3. push -up bra can be uncomfortable after a few hours

4. late night dancing

5. good look but uncomfortable fit.

6. nap after dinner but before dancing

7.outfit not proper for being on deck

8. need 2 sets of formal picture

9. not comfotable being that dressed -up

10. have nothing better to do

I really don't put a lot of effort into dressing up, so it's no big deal. From shower to shine in minutes not hours. I don't wear a lot of make-up so not much time in that area. I dress up most nights, formal or not.

We were a group of 8 on Independence 4 night cruise and all dressed up - we then were on Voyager on 7 night last year and my daughter got to wear her prom gown again. We are going again this October and love dressing up. My husband wore his tux twice and a 3 piece suit most other nights either with or without the jacket. Its easy to spot your photos as well when you are dressed up. We love it.

Just tried uploading photos but it won't let me - sorry

If you go on the "Post a Picture of your dress" forum and go onto the November 11th 2009 posting by me the pictures of our dresses are on there.

We dress formal on formal nights and for us, it's not a chore but something we all enjoy! I live in CA and we rarely if ever dress formal here, so it's treat.

The new baggage restrictions with the airlines are a hassle but for us, it's worth it.

Dress up and have fun - it is after all your vacation!
