Coka, we made a pack not to share photo's of each other with anyone else that can get possibly get us into trouble in the years to come....... lol

That being said, yes I do have a photo of the muscle guys with the towering glasses ..... but I'll keep that one for us.

I do however have a photo of the champagne that you and my son opened on the balcony ..... but as promised I won't be sharing that one either. This is really a bummer....because I have some really good ones from this trip.

I do have a photo of you when you won the gift bag at the latitudes party where you are starting your "royal" wave. Would you like me to share that one?

Coka, loving it as always. I will be going "smoke free" for the first time ever in a little over six weeks. Like you, I failed on my last cruise, but this time it is not an option. Been smoke free since December, have gone through the weight gain, and recently have been losing some of it. I have a long way to go, but no elevators and daily exercise will hopefully keep the pounds off.

I think not coughing and wheezing at night, and stinking like the boys bathroom in high school is really nice, so I will ot give in to the cowboy, who is sitting next to Virginia.

Al

Al, your words mean a lot to me. Congratulations on your quit...I am glad you responded. Did we not talk about it on the boards many years ago? The only difficult part was the first few days that included the "firsts"...the first time on the balcony...the first time after dinner...the first dance break...and such that trigger. There are plenty of other "options" onboard. If you want to know what has been working for me, email me a quest4coka at aol dot com. There is a quit smoking website in the format similar to cruise critic (you can post and people support each other). Lastly, if you need a "buddy" when you go on your cruise, know that I will be there for you at any time through an email or other venue. I joked when I wrote Friends of Coka...but in reality and from my understanding...nicotine is the most difficult to quit!

Okay, when you come back from a cruise you have to take enough time off from everything so you can post your review in one swell foop, the suspense it killing me! Good luck, BikerAl, you can do it!

Believe me Sparks, I try really hard to get it done as soon as possible! I sure wish I had that extra amount of time off. I am hurrying off now to finish!

Late Friday Night/Early Saturday Morning!

The boards have had some discussions lately on the White Hot Party as to whether they are family friendly or not. Since I attended the very first ever NCL white hot party (well, in my opinion I did, haha), and having attended one on this sailing, the answer is yes, they are now more family friendly, and yes, they have changed over the few years since inception. This makes sense if you really think about it. Everyone loves a theme party so why exclude a particular group of passengers, especially since NCL is very family friendly? If you want adult only, well, just wait until after the WHP when everyone moves to the late night adult only disco as I did later on.

We attended the family friendly WHP party which surprisingly began after Quest in Spinnaker’s which had been adult only. Celebrity guest DJ Dos-A! did a great job in song selection as there were many group dances and dances where it did not matter or not if you had a partner. Since there were about 1,000 teenagers (or was it 1,000 families?) on the dance floor, I did ask a guy sitting nearby Ocean, her son, and I to dance and he obliged me. He was missing his 15 year old son so I suggested we try to find him on the dance floor. We did not find him on dance floor so I left him when Ocean’s son said they were going to the arcade. The arcade! Something not done on the Dawn before…I was going too.

No teenagers in the arcade! Nobody in the arcade! Oh…my! What a fun place that was! I tried guitar hero for the very first time ever! I did very well…hitting the notes 78% of time for my first try surely impressed myself. Even more fun than guitar hero were the motorcycles in the corner that we raced! Who needs to power walk the promenade or work out in the gym or rent a bicycle in Bermuda when those motorcycles are in the arcade? I was Valentino Rossi! I was Ed Ketz Sr! I was Jordan Szoke! Okay, so I had no idea who I was but I sure felt like those guys! And nothing hurt when I crashed and smashed into the police cars…or the automobiles…or the traffic cones…or the barriers set up in the middle of the highway! I got back up on the bike and continued racing. Be advised though, this does not happen when you crash your scooter in Bermuda!...!!!!

The only thing that hurt were my sides the next morning…because riding the bike was indeed a workout! Who knew?!!! No idea how much money is made in the arcade, BUT…1.50 per game adds up and we quit once we figured out to just how much! I am sure many parents put restrictions on their kids after the first day. I wonder how many kids would have been in the arcade and not dancing at the WHP if the price per game was 75 cents or $1.00? I know I would have stayed longer and played longer if it was! Do they ever have "two games for the price of one" specials in the arcade as they do the martinis?

Ohhhh!---On a side note, do you want to know where your teenager is while you are in the casino? They are making out in the stairwells with their newfound cruise friends! Well, not your teenager, but somebody else’s! No worry, there are passengers like me who interrupt them by exclaiming, “HEY! How are you two doing tonight? Are you enjoying your cruise?!” Your teens then jump about ten feet and scurry away from each other. Meanwhile, one of their friends (whom you think they are with) is wandering aimlessly down the hallways looking for your teen because they lost them too…Gosh, I feel like a tattle tale! But do not worry. Security is probably watching all of them! Security is excellent on all the Norwegian ships.

After the arcade I went to the casino which is not open while in Bermuda so be sure to plan ahead! Mr. Coka gave me gambling money for my birthday present. If I won, I could keep the winnings but had to bring the original amount back to him. Huh? I clarified before leaving if I lost, did I owe him the original amount too? So I walked around the casino for a while until a dollar slot machine called my name out. I did not even sit. I stood the entire time while betting the maximum amount just like my dad taught me. Gone in 60 seconds, I concluded the arcade was more a sure thing!

Next was the disco late night because the following morning was at sea…and because we set our clocks back that evening…and because nothing good happens after 2am…but it was really only 1am now…! The late night disco had just enough room on the dance floor for me. I patiently awaited the techno set the DJ knew I liked and I was having fun dancing with myself. I was going to stay out there until it was time for me to shower…until I noticed something was just a bit off. Two guys were in the middle of the dance floor NOT dancing. I stopped because they were in my way. Girl interrupted, I exclaimed, “HEY! How are you two doing tonight? Are you enjoying your cruise?!” Unfortunately, they did not jump ten feet and scurry away from each other. Instead, one threw a punch at the other and bam! The lights were on, the music stopped, ten security guys showed up and took the hooligans away. A passenger asked me if everything was over. I told them no, once they are gone, we will all be dancing and enjoying once again. Two minutes later, my prediction came true. I told you security is excellent!

In my opinion..... I love when they have the "White Hot Party's" out on the pool deck rather then in the Spinnakers. The neon strobe lights look so much better dancing through the sky and the pools. The neon loses some of the effects dancing on the low ceilings. The Jean Ann Ryan's dancers are out dancing and encouraging everyone to dance. The photo I attached isn't really clear .... but you'll get the idea. During this cruise it was even raining and still everyone was out dancing.

As a mom that travels with her son and his friends I wish that NCL and the other cruise lines would offer a 2 for 1 in the arcade. Maybe someday! NCL does a pretty good job with their selection of arcade games for all the age groups.

Saturday!

Power walking the promenade later that morning was so much easier now. My eyes did not hone in to the hands of passengers. My nose did not search for the exhales of others…only for the bakery at the stern. I know not how many miles I walked this week, nor how many miles I bicycled, nor how many calories burned dancing. I only know I wanted to do Tai Chi with the elderly man practicing it on the promenade. I also know I wanted to ask the teen gal facing the promenade wall art as she recited from her prayer book if she by chance was on the stairwell just hours earlier… but I interrupted neither and kept walking until I got the idea to see Rico in the salon.

I asked Rico, the salon stylist in April if he would give me a haircut that would still look good 8 months later if I grew it out. He did not disappoint as only four months since and I was still getting compliments at work from people and I had not taken any scissors to it at all. He was still onboard. I admit I went to the salon to inquire, “what do you think of the person’s technique who last cut my hair” to see what his answer was…and then tell him it was him… more importantly, how many people still complimented it. He surprised me instead by remembering. So did Romanian Spa God so it was sort of like old home week for a bit! This may sound cheesy to you, but it really does make you feel good to be remembered. So Rico thinned my hair a bit and took a bit off the ends while spa God innocently asked if I was going to make an appointment with him. Of course in my head I heard and had tunnel vision to “vub his strung hunds all ovur my budy to make me veel vantastic again and again and again fer 75 minutes non stop…” until I slapped myself out of it and just as innocent, politely declined. Stupid casino dollar machine. Stupid STUPID casino dollar machine!

Even so, as a platinum latitudes member I could have enjoyed 25% off select spa signature treatments (elemis oxydermy facial, la therapie hydra lift facial, elemis aroma stone therapy massage, thai herbal poultice massage, bamboo massage, elemis aroma spa seaweed massage, ionithermie cellulite reduction program (it works…I did it last April as did my sister and her fiance) during any port day. I do think this benefit/perk is an increase from recent sailings where the benefit used to be 10%. Sooooooo…kudos to Miami office for listening to latitudes suggestions. Although spa treatments were not part of my vacation budget this sailing, knowing this will be helpful in my next! I did purchase La Therapie face scrub (very mild) and La Therapie face cleanser. It reminds me of Oil of Olay. I do not love it, I do not hate it, but will use it until the contents are gone and then continue my search for products that match my discontinued L’Occitane products.

Another latitudes platinum benefit/perk is the complimentary Behind The Scenes Tour (BTST). Having done a BTST on the Dawn twice in the past two years, I did not go on this sailing. Even so, it was nice to have the option. The BTST was offered on the last day in Bermuda at noon. If not a platinum, I think it is 75 dollars per person?

Saturday afternoon I went out to the pool deck in time to see the belly flop contest. I was not sure how I would like/enjoy it, but I found myself in the end voting for the winner. I laughed and “ohhhhhhhhhhh’d” a few times and then went up one deck near the Star Bar to lounge in the sun that stayed on me for about three hours. I thought I could hear some hoots and hollers from the second martini clinic taking place inside but it might have just been my imagination as I dozed in and out while catching up on sleep and while talking to passengers who came and left on the sides of me. One mom and her daughter were feeling bad that the son/baby brother escaped from their cabin for a few seconds, took off down the hallway, and they could not find him for a few minutes. Mom and daughter felt better to know that when I was little, my mom, my dad, and my ten older siblings did not even know they left me at the city beach one day until I was not present at the dinner table that evening. Yes, they felt better all right!

For our last dinner on board Saturday evening, we dined at Le Bistro again as part of my platinum benefit/perk which included a bottle of wine. I gave the bottle for Ocean to take home for her overnight in New York City after the cruise. I very much enjoyed eating outside the restaurant in the semi-open/semi-enclosed area where we could hear wonderful music, people watch, and visit with those who stopped to talk with us and to say goodbye. The lamb did not disappoint. For dessert, we ordered something not even on the menu. You know how I always tell you to take a peak (if you can) at what an officer is eating (or ordering) and then get the same thing because they know what is good? When we were in Le Bistro the first time, I saw one order vanilla ice cream with the warm chocolate fondue sauce in a side cup. He spooned the warm chocolate sauce over the ice cream and it hardened upon contact…on this evening we asked for the same thing…Oh…My…God…it was one of the best desserts all week! Keep in mind if there is one dessert in the world I could only have…then that would be vanilla ice cream. Such a delightful ruckus we made preparing it upon arrival, that those around us began to want some too. I think they should put it on the menu and call it The Staff’s Selection or something like that.

Stuffed, packed, and immigration/customs paperwork filled out, we headed to The Big Farewell Showtime: Bollywood. The special Norwegian farewell follows the show. I have no idea why it was on the very last night as I can remember all my cruises prior had the farewell show two nights before debarkation. Regardless, I LIKED THIS BETTER. Put on the big show…put on the big farewell performance…and leave everybody feeling good when they get off the ship in the morning! If not that, then just bring out the guy in scene 5 of Bollywood as he can probably make the entire audience feel good on his own.

Ocean almost got me on this evening. After the show and after putting our luggage out, I found myself walking around the promenade, walking around the ship with her and her son. I remembered she stays up very very very late on the last night of her cruises and I have learned not to especially when traveling the same day I debark. So I was a good girl and went to bed early. Which I am not being a good girl right now given the pressure from Sparks as the clock is striking midnight as I type.

Therefore, I will do my best to finish tomorrow. Sorry Sparks!

My husband and I have enjoyed reading your vacation adventure accounts. He is supposed to quit smoking AFTER the cruise...like that is going to happen!! We leave 9/5 on the dawn. So much looking forward to going. Thanks for sharing this with us. It had made our evenings enjoyable as my husband has been asking "did she post any more??'

SO thanks a million.

ThisIsIt Sparks! Another night past midnight...just for you!

Bobbyprez, having a quit date is a great first step. Email me at quest4coka at aol if you would like a website for your hubby that has been very helpful to me. Have a great cruise!

Cubechick, no Bermuda? What about a reunion to Bermuda next summer with Jimswims and others?

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * ** * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ** * * * * ***

How could I have forgotten the silver/gold/platinum gathering in between sunbathing and Le Bistro? This event was held in Dazzles on Saturday from 5:30 to 6:15. Cheese and crackers were set up on the side and waiters poured red or white wine and a few other cocktails. The duo Fire and Ice performed and overall it was a very nice gathering. I was not present at the beginning but usually the Hotel Director or the Latitudes Representative or other officers will give a thank you for sailing with NCL. Who does this can vary from sailing to sailing.

I had missed the Big Band Brunch in the Venetian that took place on Saturday as well from 11:00am to 1:00pm. I missed it in April too. I will make it there some day! My understanding is you have brunch while the Dawn Show band plays as well as other entertainers (guest vocalist Dave Heenan, Margie Hobbs, and more) perform. The venue is more upscale (hence the 15 dollar cover charge) with more to do than the the usual dining room experience. So if you like the Venetian in all its regular glory as the largest dining room on board, then I can just imagine what it is like when NCL kicks an experience up a notch or two with the additional dining options and entertainment. I asked if there was a way to get a menu to see what I had missed and Hotel Director Walters was very gracious to send one to me. Below is the menu. There is some really good stuff all throughout, but more so at the end in my opinion.

English muffin, toast, bagels

Caesar Salad (classic or with grilled shrimp or sliced chicken breast)

Belgium Waffles (whipped cream and fresh berries)

Create Your Own Omelet (sausage, ham, bacon, mushroom, tomato, avocado, cheddar cheese, American cheese, blue cheese, Lox, green onion)

Eggs Benedict (Canadian bacon, hollandaise sauce)

Cream of Asparagus

Penne Pasta Toscana (garlic, onions, olives, Mediterranean herbs, and Marinara sauce)

Pan Fried fillet of Norwegian Salmon (vegetable julienne, saffron risotto, chardonnay cream sauce)

Le Bistro Signature (Grilled Tenderloin Fillet, Tiger Shrimp, roasted potatoes, broccoli, béarnaise sauce)

Roasted Beef Chateaubriand (vegetables and natural gravy)

My understanding is that the above is only the sit down menu…They also have a buffet selection set up as well. Somebody will need to correct me here if I am wrong!

Prior to going bed Saturday night, I also got a print out of my onboard charges to review my purchases. My general habit is to keep my receipts, get a print out from reception mid week and again during the day/evening prior to debarkation. I keep everything on the Bank of America NCL credit card so I get extra points from NCL purchases.

Regarding the NCL credit card, I cashed in 10,000 world points in order to receive 100 dollars onboard credit (OBC). I had more to cash in but since this was my first time doing it, I did not want to be out tens of thousands more in case something went wrong. If everything went well, then I would have them available for future cruises. There are other options to choose from but I found the OBC the best for me in this situation. I think the casino credit might be a better one if gambling is your addiction of choice because you get more money for the same 10,000 points. Not totally sure but check it out on the website and see what is available.

On August 3rd I called (1-866-954-4077) and Greg switched me to extension 1134. I started my request at 1:50pm. Twelve minutes later everything was done! Pamela, the gal who I talked to at 1134 was awesome! When I told her my concerns about cashing in for the first time on the new rewards system and such, she eased my fear that something would go wrong and I said goodbye knowing I was going to have appropriate proof on the ship in case something did! I enjoyed talking with her. Keep in mind when you book with a travel agent, they are supposed to send the receipts to the travel agent. If something ever does go wrong, it might be easier to fix if you book direct through NCL.

Also prior to going to bed we decided to debark the Dawn the following morning later rather than earlier similar to how we embarked the previous Sunday. We did not want to leave! I was sad to have to go! You know the feeling, yes? Something NEW I noticed on this sailing that was not on the April one: A special section on the printout for Gold and Platinum Latitudes members! They got to debark approximately around 9am. Although it was scheduled after the Easy Walk Off Guests (whose approximate time was 8:45-9:30), it was nice to see a special section or thought given to them. Kudos to Miami office for listening once again making their repeat passengers feel special. The suite and VIP guests as usual could meet in the secret location and debark secretly. You get a secret notice from your concierge with the secret plan details. Do not forget the secret handshake prior to debarking if you are privy to this information…!

My flight did not leave until 3:50 and Ocean and her son’s Manhattan hotel check in could be anywhere from 11:00am-3:00pm. We were very thankful to have all the options available to debark the ship and did not have to be anywhere fast. Even so, I read a lot about what is important to you on your cruise vacations. Some of you budget for tours, some of you budget or plan for those special dinners, and some of you factor in the unknown. The ONE definite thing I plan for, budget, factor in in addition to the aforementioned, is getting out of the immigration/customs area the best way possible. Keep in mind once you step foot off the ship, you are in the hands of the terminal, immigration and customs, and other!

I therefore ask the big huge strong dock workers inside the terminal with the big huge strong metal carts to take us out all the way. By this I mean for them to not just get us outside the first set of doors and dump us. I mean all the way to a cab upstairs on this sailing or all the way to our vehicle in the parking lot after April’s sailing. If my cab was across the street downstairs, I would have him asked him that too. Many of you have written how it can be a culture shock once you leave the ship after being pampered the entire week. Therefore, I factor in continuing to be pampered by a 6’ 5” Italian stallion who can get me out of there quickly, efficiently, and with a few jokes along the way!

If you want to know where they hang out…there is a designated spot beyond the luggage area just before you get into the immigration line…but some hang out by the VIP section of the luggage area just before the designated spot. I went to Ocean’s hotel and hung around until a hired car took me to JFK two hours before my flight. The roads on Sunday were less traffic and checking in curbside was a breeze.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Epilogue:

On the flight home I reflected how Bermuda and NCL have a unique partnership now and that they are very similar. In Bermuda, you are not a tourist. You are a visitor. On NCL, you are not a passenger. You are family. The employees of the Dawn made me feel like a favorite relative they had not seen in a while. I certainly never would have made it through this cruise without my guardian angel, Kjartan, who protected me all throughout the week. It took a day or two to figure out I was sailing with one and I am very grateful that Ocean, her son, and I experienced what we did onboard My Darling Dawn and on the Wonderful Island of Bermuda!

This was the most difficult review I have ever written but I DID IT! Woooo-Hooooo! I made it through “the first since.” Thanks to those of you who gave me public encouragement and to those of you who emailed me. Never quit quitting because at some point a quit WILL become permanent. I used to quit every night before going to bed until watching a loved one struggle with life and death and concluded that was NOT going to be me. This time feels different…and I remain hopeful Lady Willpower stays with me. OHHHHH>>>>I was the same weight when I got home too! I know where I am heading next and it is going to be scary! Very very scary! Mwuahhhhhhh!

Great review Coka! It was great meeting you and spending some time with you at the various get-togethers (Meet and Greet, VIP party and Platinum party) and we can't forget the Martini Clinic. You really should have come to the second one, it was a lot of fun!

Hopefully we will cruise together again!:D

Thank you for the great review Coka it was as if we were there! If you survived the cruise without smoking I am sure you will be strong and succeed this time. Dont let a small set back get you down just put it behind you and move on..... Here is your goal; for each pack of cigarettes you would have purchased put that money in your next cruise fund! lol

Hopefully we will meet up again, I am going on the Dawn Cruise to nowhere in May 2011 from Boston we will be doing our Annual Ladies Cruise to Nowhere (we leave all the hubbys home) and I am very excited just thinking about being back on the Dawn again. Come join us the more the merrier! If you recall I just got back from the Spirit but will admit that the Dawn is still my fav ship! I would love to cruise again in the summer of 2011 maybe we should join JimSwims on the Gem!

Until your next exciting review...........

Thanks Coca, for a great review! I really have enjoyed reading it, as I will cruise on Dawn at 10/03 out of NYC to New England/Canada. This will be my 2.cruise, previously sailed with my kids on the Gem, also out of NYC. This time I will be sailing solo, and after reading your review I now consider if I maybe should join the Martini-tasting...sounds like fun...!

Greetings all the way from Norway :)

Thanks again for the kind words! Not sure exactly when and where sailing in 2011...but believe me, once the first snow falls around here, I figure it out soon thereafter!

Norwegianprincess, I love your screen name! I met a large family of Norwegians on a Pearl cruise in February as well as some Norwegian travelers during other years. I have no doubt you will be cared for like a princess on the Dawn! Enjoy the cruise and be sure to join the roll call if your sailing has one.

Ocean, I saw the pictures of the Dawn at sea and in port that she took while on the Celebrity ship but I am not able to access her shutterfly link. Am I doing something wrong?
