Are There Non-Smoking Staterooms?

There are no non-smoking cabins on NCL ships.

They do a very good job of getting any smoke odors out of the cabins when the cabins are turned over for the next cruise. Some times the cleaning is not good enough, but they are quick to re-do it. They use an ionizing system that should provide a clean-smelling cabin.

However, balcony cabins can get ongoing smoke from neighbors smoking on the balcony. The casino is a smoking area...there are smoking areas outside by the pool and on the promenade deck. People who are sensitive to the smell will smell the smoke way before it becomes a possible danger to them, and there are many ways to avoid the smoke, like in the real world ashore.

You should contact the special needs desk at NCL prior to leaving to make sure that they know of your needs.

There are totally non-smoking cruise experiences available on a very few other lines -- unfortunately, I don't know what they are.

With the exception of the Casino (which you will have to avoid) I have never had a problem with most of the outside areas. We did have a problem on our balcony a few years ago because the man next door (closer to the front of the ship) smoked all the time on his. it would come right back to our balcony and into our cabin if the door was open. But never had the smell of smoke in our cabin and that is a smell that I HATE, so I could have noticed and complained.

Thanks. I sent Special Needs an e-mail.

There are many outside areas that are non smoking and you can fully enjoy them without smoke smell.

Sorry but that was not my experience. Where are these places? The whole promenade and pool area are smoking heck even the kids pool area had people smoking.

This varies by ship within the NCL fleet, but in my experience there are very few outside areas that are specifically DESIGNATED as non-smoking. So the likelihood of encountering smoke exists just about everywhere outside. The staff will enforce non-smoking rules in DESIGNATED areas, but where none are designated you are pretty much on your own.

How about the whole starboard side of the ship?? Granted, there are always people who don't follow rules, point them out to the pool attendants and things are resolved quite easily.

That's been my experience, too, PE -- there's no smoking on the Starboard side of the ships I've been on, and I've never noticed a problem there.

Right from Cruise Critics site :

"Where You Can Smoke: Smoking is permitted in cabins, on open decks, and in casinos and cigar bars."

This was my first NCL cruise so I do not know if it is normal or not, but both port and starboard sides allowed smoking on the deck and there were signs stating so.

We were on the Sky a few weeks ago, and smoking was only allowed on one side of the pool deck. As a smoker, I can DEFINITELY tell you that there are a LOT more non-smoking areas than smoking ones, that's for sure!

I've read that you can smoke in your staterooms.

If you are not a smoker, does the stateroom smell?

I have a Cystic Fibrosis child. Second hand smoke or residual smoke is not healthy for her.

I'm concerned......:(

I am a CF adult. Nothing is healthy for us. You have to deal with the real world. We can't live in a bubble.

I've been on four different NCL ships and all of them allowed smoking (with signs and ashtrays welded on the wall) on the ENTIRE parameter of the promenade deck. Three of the ships banned smoking on one side of the pool, but the Dawn did not.

I am the worst kind of non-smoker there is (an ex smoker). One of the best things out there to remove smoke smell is called Ozium. You can find it at Wal Mart, your local auto parts store in the air freshener section, and any number of other retail locations. You can buy industrial strength smoke remover in some janitorial supply stores, but it is a lot more, and it does not work all that much better anyways.

On the Sky, both the port and starboard sides had ash trays. I kept trying to figure out which side was non-smoking since I will go out of my way to walk on the non-smoking side, and by the end of the cruise, I finally realized there was not a non-smoking side.

There were also ash trays on all the tables on both sides of the deck outside of the Plantation bar.

The Dailies simply said that smoking was allowed in the "Designated outside deck areas". I never saw signs smoking was or was not allowed, but I figured ash trays designated smoking areas.

I am very sensitive to smoke and smoke smell.

I have never had a problem in a cabin. Some people on these boards have reported they have gone into a cabin that smelled like smoke and they reported it to the steward. The steward brought in a couple of ionizers and asked the people to leave the cabin for a couple of hours. When they came back it was fine.

I have been worried about ending up in a really smokey area of a hallway. When we were on Princess, walking down the hall to get to our cabin was pretty hard. There were two cabins where the smoke was almost pouring out under and around the doors. I would hold my breath and get through the area as quickly as possible, or go all the way around the front of the ship to avoid that area of hallway. If I was in a room right by those 2 cabins, I probably would have had a problem. Luckily in 5 cruises, that has never happened.
