levonfan Posted September 29, 2010 #1 Share Posted September 29, 2010 Looking at possibly taking a cruise on the Holland America Nieuw Amsterdam in March of next year to the Bahamas, Turks, Cayman Islands, and Costa Maya. We have never been on a Holland America ship. I've only been on the Royal Caribbean Liberty of the Seas, and she has been on that and one other RC and one Carnival ship. We would probably get one of the suites, and are looking for something that would be completely relaxing. Are there differences to Holland America ships then the others? I think I saw something about they allow smoking all over the ship? Is that true? Looks to be a really nice ship, but didn't look as though the pool areas are that large? We are 35 and 40, so not too young, but enjoy being active. Thanks for any info...
RuthC Posted September 29, 2010 #2 Share Posted September 29, 2010 I think I saw something about they allow smoking all over the ship? Is that true? Absolutely and unequivocally untrue. Smoking is allowed in your cabin and on your balcony. It is allowed in the Northen Lights Disco, Casino and adjacent Sports Bar, and some areas of outside decks. Oh, and 35 & 40 is kinda young. ;) There will likely be other passengers in that age range, as well as many older passengers. All will be looking to have a good time. If you are looking for a restful, relaxing cruise, HAL is a good choice.
CtheW0rld Posted September 29, 2010 #3 Share Posted September 29, 2010 you aren't going to leave your cabin, anyway. joking. HAL will not have nearly as many 'active' activities are you may be used to. they are geared to an older crowd. you may like it.

Johanna7 Posted September 29, 2010 #6 Share Posted September 29, 2010 Yes, there are many activities. Oh, not rock wall climbing walls but they had jogs around the decks and all types of crafts, movies, many really good ones. Lots of cooking demonstrations and dancing. In the ports you can do an unlimited amount of all types of activities. As for smoking, we do not smoke and didn't notice very much smoking at all on the Maasdam and certainly couldn't smell any. If you go into some cities in Europe (but you are not) you will find many of the local residents who smoke but even there now, many establishments forbid it. savannahgirl1 Posted September 30, 2010 #15 Share Posted September 30, 2010 I can only give you my opinion. In 1998 my husband and I were married. I was 25 and he was 23. We were booked on the Veendam for stops in Mexico, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Half Moon Cay. We didn't have suite, just a veranda room. Now begs the question, did we enjoy ourselves with such an older crowd. A more demure ship. No disco, no extreme late nights, no climbing wall, mini golf ect. And the answer is YES!!! We LOVED it. It was kinda nice being so young because all the guests treated us like their grandchildren, it was so sweet. We had a great time. And yes there were a few more couples on board that was in the 20-35 range. We weren't the only ones. But it was great, so great that on our 10th anniversary we chose Holland America again. This time it was the Volendam for a 10 day Panama Canal cruise, and again we loved it now being 35 and 33. We are sailing the Noordam next March at 38 and 36. I sincerely believe you would enjoy yourselves. :D Oh and congratulations on your marriage. Many happy years!!!

Make sure you're travel agent notes you're on honeymoon. You'll get a special invite to a special guest party with the Captain & his staff and a signed congratulations certificate by the captain. DW & I are itching to do that cruise again....or at least take another trip on the Maasdam.

levonfan Posted September 30, 2010 Author #23 Share Posted September 30, 2010 Thanks for all of the info. She is typically the lounge around by the pool area type of girl...either that or the spa. I liked the Royal Caribbean Liberty of the Seas because I could go and ride the flowrider while she hung out by the pool. Are there only two pools on this ship? Are they generally pretty large? RuthC Posted September 30, 2010 #25 Share Posted September 30, 2010 Are there only two pools on this ship? Are they generally pretty large? Most of the HAL ships have two pools. The Veendam and Rotterdam are down to one. :( They are larger than pools used to be in "the good old days" (when they were the size of a postage stamp), but I wouldn't call them large by any means. They are a comfortable size.
