Formal Night Etiquette

Hi Everyone,

I have a question: On formal nights, is it appropriate/acceptable to dress down after dinner, especially if you want to hang out in areas where smoking is acceptable (and you are not a smoker)? I always eat during the late seating and am not one for the shows, esp. if they are after the dinner service. After dinner, between 10:00 and 11:00 pm, I like to go into the casino. Is it ok to dress down at that point?

When I am on Celebrity, I don't normally dress down since they don't allow smoking at all in the casino, so I feel more comfortable wearing my suits and tux's in that environment. But, on other ship brands, the casino is fair game for smoking and I don't want to stink up my clothes. (I am not a smoker.)

Non-smoking tables are irrelevant in a casino that allows smoking since the stench is everywhere, once you cross the threshold into the casino.

Any thoughts on this issue?

Thanks!

Did you ever wonder that if the smoke makes your clothes smell what that same smoke does to your lungs?

Agreed! Which is why I normally cruise with Celebrity. It just so happens that friends wanted to cruise out of Galveston this December with me and I decided to join them. So, do I step into the casino, or don't I? haha!

I have been on RCI cruises that have no smoking in the casino on at least one formal night. You can still smell the stench of cigarettes because that just doesn't ever go away, but at least there is no smoke coming at you ;)

Check it out to see if there is a casino non-smoking formal night on your ship :)

While I do my best to dress appropriately according to the cruise line's dress code "suggestions", I really don't think anyone would notice if you chose to "dress down" after dinner, so long as you weren't totally "dressing down"! (I'm thinking t-shirt and flip flops, or in your bathrobe, or baseball cap on backwards.. :p ;) )

I avoid the casino. I not a smoker, and even on lines where smoking is allowed, the casino is the worst. Seems like a blue haze settles over it and never goes away.

On our recent Princess cruises, the casino has had nonsmoking nights to correspond with formal nights. I never thought about why--but your reasoning makes a lot of sense. I prefer to keep my money and don't gamble much, usually just make my $10 per cruise to the casino before giving up.

I enjoy going to the casino in my tux James Bond style. But you will see everything from shorts and flip-flops to top hat and tails after dinner. On our last cruise their were two guys gambling in their formal kilts. So do what makes you comfortable and enjoy your cruise. If what you wear ruins someone else's cruise than shame on them.
