At least 90% of adults wouldn't link X with Celebrity

I called Celebrity to explain X the rules.

I was told that X is for excellence and its the Celebrity symbol.

I guess that everyone is supposed to know that X means Celebrity eXcellence and not F (forget) the rules.

This would make a nice Jeopardy question.

The category is Company brand symbols.

X

What is US steel? No sorry

What is Xerox? No sorry

What is Brand X jeans? No sorry

That's funny, because on CC trivia we were told that X is the greek letter (or something along those lines) for the founding companies last name.

I'd believe Host Anne any day over someone at the X call center. :)

I can say, I would say I was more than just familiar with cruising, I'd researched a lot of brands for the few trips we have been on. It wasn't until these boards that I associated X with Celebrity at all. In fact, until I got an email solicitation for the cruise we did take, I'm not sure I would have been able to list Celebrity as a cruiseline if I had to name them all.

Now I see ads all over the place.

It is the family name, they are just using it for the new campaign. They make reference to it in the press release and why they are borrowing it for the campaign.

Celebrity Cruises is a cruise line founded in 1988 by the Greek Chandris Group.[1] In 1997, Celebrity Cruises Ltd. merged with Royal Caribbean International to become Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., which operates Celebrity, Royal Caribbean International, Azamara Club Cruises, Pullmantur Cruises and CDF Croisieres de France. The signature "X" displayed on the funnel of Celebrity ships is the Greek letter chi, for "Chandris".[2][3] The company has its headquarters in Miami, Florida.[4] Common features on board Celebrity brand ships are aft-glass dining rooms, formal foyer areas, alternate dining venues, balcony and suite staterooms, large pools and lounging areas, signature bars and lounges, libraries, elegant spas and gyms, and relaxation areas.

I believe that the current exec's over at Celebrity BELIEVE that the American public associates X with Celebrity but guess what - they're wrong.

It wasn't until my first Celebrity cruise that I understood the X on the side of the ship stood for Celebrity.

Try this - go to google and type "X" and hit images.

You'll see images for X-men, letters, X-rays, even the upcoming X-Factor.

What DON'T you see - Celebrity Ships.

This is what happens with a company and in-breeding and yes-men. Some muckety muck high up gets and idea and his/her yes people go with it until it makes it up the chain. Unfortunately no one at Celebrity is afraid to tell them this:

The emperor has no clothers....

Oh, I'm aware of the cookies. They've taken out big ads in magazines such as Food & Wine, for example. But again, there's a disconnect with the advertisers and real world situations, as Blu is touted as a healthy dining option for light fare.

I have talked about Celebrity for a long to a friend..Just the other day she saw an "X" ship and commented on it. I told her that was Celebrity. She had no idea. She has been on 12 cruises on many lines...I explained about the Greek Chi and she just said "OH". She thought it was a low cost budget cruise line, like white label generic products..

I do not mind the X at all. I just don't like X the rules. They have added a "rule" to the web site for reference. I still think they should X this campaign. Won't really make any difference to me, I still will sail X and know that a silly campaign does not take away from the "Xperience".

Funny to see all this "x" fuss......I had no idea about it. We had dinner this past Thursday with the Staff Captain aboard the Solstice and I just happened to ask him what the X was for. I never really new and it just came up in conversation. It was the first letter of the family name who originally owned the cruise line....and so the story goes! X should stand for xterminate the buggy little virus that hit our stateroom last week!!!! Wish there was a way to get rid of that pesky Norwalk virus!!!!

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO SilkShirt: X in Greek is pronounced CH. The founder of Celebrity Cruise Line name is Chandris. Yes, they owned Chandris Cruises. There are a few members of the Chandris family that today sits on the Board of Directors for RCCL.

From the responses to the "X the Rules" slogan it appears that many posters don't know the "X" is from the Greek "Chi", and originated from the Chandris Cruise Line, as Casino Player pointed out.

Very often "What does the 'X' stand for?" is a Trivia Question on Celebrity Cruises, as it was last week on the Century. Only a few of the participants knew the answer.

I'm not sure what the intent ot the slogan and new ad campaign was - we'll all know more tomorrow, after Mr. Hanrahan's call - but don't think it was meant to eliminate rules - at least I hope not!

Thanks for proving the point of Celebrity's ill-fated marketing campaign! NO ONE KNOWS WHAT X STANDS FOR!

In American slang when you X something out there is an understanding that it refers to removing or negating the object. On a test you get an X when the answer is wrong or incorrect. Hence X the rules IMPLIES break the rules....

No matter how clever any marketing plan is, if you have to explain it to people it isn't good.

I still think X the Rules is the X-Rated version of F the rules.

If enough people like me, who really do get the implication (nuance it's not), are told to get with the program, will head for the eXit when these Xecs reap the results in Xcess.

Change is not always for the better.

So, they're saying "eXcellence the Rules"? That makes even less sense, and makes it sound like the person who came up with this whole ill-fated idea needs additional lessons in grammar.

I'm new to Celebrity, but not to cruising. Before visiting this specific sub-forum of CC, I'd never heard Celebrity referred to as 'X'. Even here it seems to be the domain of those who'd like to consider themselves part of a clique. Whenever I've seen the 'X' logo on a ship's funnel, I've recognised it as a Celebrity vessel, but I'd never associate it with Celebrity in isolation.

I knew X was Celebrity LONG before I started cruising from their TV ads in the mid 90's.......those same ads pushing the cuisine onboard caused me to take my first cruise on Mercury a few years later...

And having 90% of the population not knowing isn't that shocking....95% of Americans can't find Poland on a map either!
