Smoking in the Spirit Casino... Really?

Of the lines I have been on. RCI does not, Princess did not on the last ship I was on, Celebrity does not and I have not been on Carnivore in a while but have heard that they also have banned it in the rooms. Princess is the one that nearly burned down a ship with a carelessly tossed cigarette. I think they also banned the smoking on balconies shortly after that accident that killed one person.

So..... I still go on NCL. Doesn't mean I have to like the policy, just have to live with it. Our Xmas leg of our b to b on the spirit was as bad as I have had in about 10 years. Luck of the draw to get two heavy smokers in the room next to us. There was a door between the two rooms and every time they left the balcony door open we were inundated in smoke from the room. (That was often).

I am a big boy and know what I am getting into. I will be on the Spirit at spring break are still in that room. We will fix that problem next xmas as we have changed rooms to get rid of that door.

Your information is incorrect. Princess allows smoking in the cabins as does Carnival. I sail on them and smoke. No problem.

Ms belp, your comments are great! ;) My husband and I are both smokers. We don't smoke in our house. We either go out back, or into the garage if its too cold outside. We are booked on two upcoming cruises. I specifically booked the very last cabin aft on both cruises to be courteous to our balcony "neighbors" upwind. We won't be smoking in our cabin, but I can't tell you how much I look forward to enjoying cocktails on my balcony with a cigarette or two....

Going back to the OP's original post regarding casino on the Spirit:

I got off the Spirit Sunday and have to put my input here. Of the 31 cruises I've taken so far since 2002, this cruise was the most smoke free I've seen. Yes, there were smokers on the ship and smokers in the casino but I did not notice the smoke as much as I have on the other 30 cruises I've taken.

I have cruised the Spirit 4 times over the past 4 years and have never felt that the casino was as ``smokey'' as other ships I've sailed. Maybe it's due to the size of the casino combined with the back lounge that is attached. It's really a very large space compared to casinos on other ships.

Maybe I noticed the less smoke in the Spirit's casino more than some others since I just cruised Carnival Glory in December where clouds of smoke could be seen in the air in the casino every night. There were no smoke clouds on the Spirit this time and my clothes did not reek of second hand smoke after being in there for an hour or so like I've experienced on other ships.

Just my 2 cents worth for whatever it's worth.

Dianne

Thanks for your specifics, Dianne. Now I can breath a little easier :)

Do you remember where cigar smoking is allowed on the Spirit? None in our group is a cigarette smoker, but the guys do smoke 1 cigar on each cruise we take. Just their 'thing', I guess.

From the Freestyle Daily, February 4, 2011:

Smoking Policy: No smoking is allowed inside the ship with the exception of the Casino, Mahrini's Night Club bar couner, Deck 7 Fwd, the Cigar Room, Deck 12, Fwd, Decks 12 & 13 Portside only, and guest staterooms. (Cigar and pipe smoking is not permitted in the staterooms.)

Now we were up and down that hallway a number of times and never saw any signage for a smoking room. But on the NCL website it shows as just forward of the library on the starboard side.

If so it used to be the Latitudes Lounge and is accessible by going through the Library. There may be an entrance just before you go in to the Galaxy of the Stars or from the Observatory area.

Hope this helps,

Charlie

That is correct. There is a smoking "lounge" right where you said. I think it is there so people who want to smoke one of those Cuban cigars will have a place indoors.

They need people who succumb to addiction. It's the people who can't stop smoking that may also be the people who can't stop gambling. Easy explanation.

Although I wonder if at some point they will realize they are scaring off the largest number of people - the non-smokers. I wish they would make the first hour or so smoke free and then let the walking cigarette butts :D light up.

Interesting theory. It also seems like some people are addicted to complaining about others smoking. :D

Is it my imagination or does it seem that if a smoking thread gets ugly, its usually started by a non-smoker calling smokers names or generally being rude about something we do that is not only legal, but published by the cruise line that we can partake onboard? Sometimes it really does make me want to stop trying to be so careful that I smoke in a smoking area. Why bother being careful if people are going to be rude anyway.

Amen Terry.. I hope you get to read this before it is deleted, like my earlier factual (not emotional, not confrontational) post was. The fact is, it is legal and published, and as much as people like you and I try to avoid imposing our smoke on others, there will always be some who are bullies about it no matter how conscientious we are in their presence.

I love this board!! Such great entertainment. I've never seen so many people complaining and arguing about VACATION. Let the smokers smoke, let the drinkers drink. Dive into the chocolate buffet! People should give their smoke "allergy" a vacation too! Lighten up people... it's a vacation! Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz will still be waiting for you on TV when you get home.

The problem with this is that some of us actually have conditions that are aggravated by smoking, such as asthma.

I'm lucky that I've never had an asthma attack that has sent me to the hospital, and I really don't feel like having one in the future. That said, as long as people smoke downwind of me, I should be fine. Chances are, I'll be the one to move and make sure that I'm upwind. I learned to do this with an ex-SO.

It is entertaining to see how much arguing occurs on certain subject. ;-)

This is one of the things I liked about Princess. They offered a smoke free casino night. This was the ONLY time we enjoyed the casino. Every other night and on every other ship we would have to hold our breaths just to walk through the casino to get to other parts of the ship...that's how bad it was. I wish other lines would follow suit like Princess and offer just ONE night for the non-smokers. Otherwise we avoid the casino at all costs

Its different when your choice greatly affects the people around you. Would you want someone talking loud and obnoxiously on their cell phone while you are trying to lay out and relax by the pool? No, you would probably expect them to have consideration for others. And no one said anything about drinking..unless you are a belligerent, violent drunk then I would say you probably shouldn't drink out of respect for others. YOU are not the ONLY person on the ship. There are also children on board, maybe people don't want their kids subject to second hand smoke or as someone else stated what about people with respiratory issues. As with most addictions you are rarely concerned with how it can affect someone else and more concerned with feeding your your addiction.

There are plenty of non-smoking areas on all of the cruise ships I have been aboard. In fact the amount of non-smoking areas far out weighs the number of smoking areas.

Yes, this is part of addictive behavior -- rationalizing one's own conduct and choices at all costs while ignoring, denying or making light of the effects on others.

When you read these smoking threads, you can predict with some accuracy who is likely to quit -- or at least to try to quit -- in the foreseeable future and who is a long, long way from it...if they ever will quit. The very first step is letting go of self-justifications and self-delusions, and many people never make it that far.

Well said.

I like to enjoy a cigar and relax when I can. I plan to do that on my upcoming cruise and don't want anyone telling me how to spend my vacation as long as I am following the rules. I dont gamble, but if they made a smoke free night in the casino, it only seems fair to make a smoking night in the dining rooms.

Enjoy. Cigars are allowed in the enclosed cigar lounge and on open deck areas as long as it's away from venues serving food, the jogging track, and in immediate range of the outdoor sporting venues and children's pool areas.

Planer, my pleasure. Are you having as much trouble finding the ignore function you touted the other day as you do conducting basic internet searches? Let me know if you need help again, old fella.
