rlmosher Posted March 20, 2011 #1 Share Posted March 20, 2011 Hi folks this is my first attempt at a "live from" thread, but I will give it a try. I got it right now after entering the wrong heading. DW and I stayed at the Crown Plaza in San Pedro. The room was great; we had a view of the port from our 7th floor room. We hopped the first shuttle to the ship and arrived for check in at about 10:50AM It was a breeze checking in. Had to wait till about noon before they let us board. We booked this cruise a bit last minute and were assigned anytime dining. We like traditional 1st or 2nd seating so we went right to the maitre'd to request a change. We then went to the cabin and dropped off our carry on luggage. We met our cabin steward, Efrain who seems to be a good steward as he has taken care of our requests. The weather is over cast but comfortable. Got the dining request letter dropped in our mail box, first seating. Our table mates are wonderful. We went to the welcome aboard show. It was in the Princess theater and featured Steve Morrison, the dancers and the cruise director's staff. Explorers Lounge has welcome aboard trivia and dancing to the sounds of M.I.T. The movie tonight is Inception. Time for the show to start so I will post more later. The cruise director is Kelvin Joy he just joined the ship today. He did a little welcome thing in the middle of the show before Steve came on. He was pretty funny. We will see how he dose the rest of the cruise. I went to post the above last night and found that the Internet was down for maintenance but, as you can see it is back up this morning. I will post more a little later after I go eat. rlmosher Posted March 20, 2011 Author #2 Share Posted March 20, 2011 Sunday March 20th Sorry for the mix up on the thread title. I am hoping that the folk on the other one find me here. That's what I get for not having my dear wife check it for me The weather forecast for today is a high of 56. It is cool out now and the seas are calm. Today we have the first art action, Lynn and I like to go to that. Our meet and greet is at the same time so we will miss the action. Tonights show in the princess theater is Do you wanna dance. In the Explorers Lounge Steve Moris preforms his comedy and music show at 8:30 and 10:30. At 9:30 they are having 60's music trivia. The Club fusion well host a Rock 'N' Roll party at 9:30, Pop Star heat one at 10:15. Today's matinee movie will be True Grit staring Jeff Bridges & Matt Damon. I would like to see this movie but it is at 2:00. Too much going in that time slot. Someone post last week the internet was slow and now working well The Internet seems to be working fine now. Have full bars in my cabin and the speed is ok for being at sea. There are lots of kids onboard on this cruise, last night we had some running up and down the hall stomping there feet. I am going to go down and purchase a couple of future cruise credits. After reading of the problems I am hopping that things go smooth the new person is Ray. We will see... We were on the Sapphire in February and enjoyed it alot..here is wishing you blue skies, warm weather, and no lumps and bumps! By the way we are having very very wet weather here in Los Angeles today.

Pam in CA Posted March 21, 2011 #5 Share Posted March 21, 2011 Thanks for the "live from" thread. Be thankful you boarded yesterday. You missed an absolutely rotten day today; boarding would have been a nightmare with torrential rain, high winds and thunderstorms. While you're getting chilly weather, it could be much worse. :( I'll be reading your reports with interest .

rlmosher Posted March 21, 2011 Author #9 Share Posted March 21, 2011 March 20th update I went to the future cruise desk and met with Ray, he ask if I wanted an e-mail receipt or to send a letter to my cabin. I ask for the paper receipt delivered to the cabin. Today they had the Pub Lunch in the Savoy dinning room. I love the fish and chips, so off the DW and I went. She had the Bangers and mash and I had the fish. It was good and I could have had a second plate but I resisted. The meet and greet was today. We had about 16 or 18 people attend. No one from the ship staff attended but with a group that small I did not expect any of them. I missed the afternoon movie True Grit. I hope they play it on the TV. Tonight was formal night. The desert was Banana Foster emmmmm good. After dinner we went to see Steve Moris in the explorer Lounge. After the show it was back to the cabin. I went out a got some photos of the moon reflecting on the water. The seas are calm almost flat and the temp is comfortable. The sea’s remained calm all day. Well that’s it for today. Thanks for the weather update. when we left Sacramento Ca friday we were just ahead of the storm. Glad it waited till Sunday to hit LA.

rlmosher Posted March 21, 2011 Author #11 Share Posted March 21, 2011 Good morning Day 3 March 21st I can tell we are more south, as it is quite pleasant out this morning. The forecast for today is overcast. The info channel says waves 4 to 7 foot waves, but it look much more calm than that. The wind is blowing but not enough for white caps yet. The entertainment tonight is a repeat of last night. Do You Want To Dance in the Princess Theater and Steve Moris again in the Explorers Lounge. There is a late night movie at 10:00pm “The Town” staring Ben Afflect and Rebecca Hall. The Wheelhouse Bar has Cocktail Melodies With Rudy at 6:30 -7:15 Then the Jazz Trio takes over at 7:30 for an hour. At 8:30 The Big Band Blast with Doug Tann & the Sapphire Orchestra takes the stage and to end the night from 10:00 till closing M.I.T. takes the stage. The Enrichment Lecture today is Joseph Valencic talking about Sharks of the Pacfic. That will be at 10:00am There is a fruit and vegetable carving demo in the atrium. Now I can learn to carve vegies and impress my friends that come to dinner. For those that like to party there is a Tequila tasting & raffle event this afternoon. We get a second Pub Lunch offered today. You can guess where I will be eating as I love Fish & Chips. Well enough for now the wife is giving me the eye to head up to the buffet for something to eat; like I need to eat some more. ☺
CruzinNoony Posted March 21, 2011 #12 Share Posted March 21, 2011 You mentioned that Kelvin Joy is your CD. He is our favorite. If you run into him, please ask him how long his contract is with the Sapphire. We would love to have him for our CD for our 28 day LA/Hawaii/Tahiti/LA cruise in October. :D

Dh and I will be on her in Sept. All your info is appreciated. :D Chris, I just got off of the Sapphire March 19th. I was concerned about the condition of the ship since I just got off the Golden in July after her re-fit. No Worries! She's in excellent shape. I am amazed at how well these ships are maintained! We loved the Sapphire as it was our first time on her! We were able to enjoy the Ultimate Ship Tour and if anyone may be concerned of the cleanliness of the kitchens, NO WORRIES there either! It was absolutely spotless! The word ship-shape brings a whole new meaning to me!

BayouGirlUSA Posted March 21, 2011 #17 Share Posted March 21, 2011 Dh and I want to do the Ultimate Ship Tour too. :) Chris, When we got on the ship, we immediately went to the Passengers Service desk to sign up for the UST. We had a group of 8. We were 3rd on the list taking the next 8 spots. There were 15 in our UST group! We didn't board the ship until about 12:30 and was very surprised to find that only 2 people had signed up. We got our invitation on Wednesday and the tour was on Friday at 8:15 a.m.
rlmosher Posted March 22, 2011 Author #18 Share Posted March 22, 2011 We went to the lecture on the pacific sharks and it was interesting. After that the wife wanted to go to the diamond and gem talk. She wanted me there to enter to win the Fire Opel they were giving away. When that ended we went to get the Pub Lunch and found that it had been reset later in the week. I was disappointed, so we headed up to the Trident Grill for a burger and fries. We decided to take a walk around the ship when we finished lunch. The over cast dissipated midway thru the morning and the wind was out of the north. We went to the deck on top of the bridge and it was dead calm. I can never remember a time on any of our cruises that we experienced that while under way. Today there was a big wedding with the reception in the Wheelhouse Bar. It was decorated up vary elegant. It looked like a lot of people attended. Wouldn’t that be wonderful to have your wedding on a cruise? Now that we are down near Cabo we are sighting lots of whales. I spent the afternoon on the balcony on watch. Tonight in the dinning room we had the Cherry’s Jubelly. That was real tasty. CruzinMoony, I will ask him when I see hem next. Cruisehappy & ChrisB123, The ship is in good condition, I agree with BayouGirlUSA it is in excellent shape. They are doing some painting here and there. My only complaint is the toilet smells of urine when the cover is lifted. I ask the steward to scrub it but it still has the smell. We are on Baha 624, we were upgraded from category D to this cabin. So far we love it. ChrisB123, The wife and I did the UST last year and just loved it also with the gifts they give you it was well worth the cost. You get the deluxe robe, which is $90.00 in the ship store, a chef’s coat and a bunch of photos.
jrobinso Posted March 22, 2011 #19 Share Posted March 22, 2011 Very interesting comment about the smell in your bathroom. We just got off Sapphire and we had the same problem in our bathroom. I even scrubbed it myself with bleach wipes I had brought....no improvement. We were in a mini on Emerald. We also had several days where the toilet would not flush for 30-45 mins at a time. casinovisitor Posted March 22, 2011 #20 Share Posted March 22, 2011 Thanks for the post Bob, We will be boarding when you get off...head down to A749 when you get a chance and ask the occupants to leave any leftover booze in the cabin and we will be happy to take care of it for them :)

We had that no flushing problem on the Golden but did not encounter any toilet issues at all on the Sapphire. My sister who was in the room right next door to mine had odor issues in her bathroom but ours was fine! Isn't that weird how that works? We were in rooms C508 and C512. My sister who was in the room right next door to mine had odor issues in her bathroom but ours was fine! Isn't that weird how that works? We were in rooms C508 and C512. This must be a common thing? I've seen many reports of this on various ships. I had problems with the toilet on Golden, too........Emerald deck mini..... It would flush whenever the mood struck. I would have to go in and do a pre-flush to make sure it was working!
