boarding with someone who needs assistance

If someone needs assistance, they will wave you to check in at a HC window and then allow you to board with platinum and VIPs. usually the same area. HC usually gets on just before VIP. (not the whole family, only the person who needs to give assistance).

If the others are children, they probably will have you all board with the HC person who needs the special assistance. It also depends on the port if they allow the rest of the family to board with the HC person.

we arranged for a wheelchair, and we were all escorted on to the ship.

... but then you have to wait for the wheelchair to arrive and you dont get to board in front of everyone else.

We have tried this way too and got tired of waiting on the wheelchair. But they will bring one eventually if you dont mind waiting.

it was there waiting for us, with an attendant, when we arrived.

We tend to get there early so we can be first one as platinum.

The wheelchairs are still being used to offload pax I guess is why they arent waiting for us. We want to get on first. My sister is mobility handicapped, and getting more so, so we have asked a few times about wheelchairs, as it is a very long walk to get onboard for her. She could barely make it. Now I dont think she could.

our usual arrival time is 10:30.

now that we are platinum, the whole point is moot.

Can a family member wait in line to check in a person who needs assistance? or does everyone have to wait in line?

To answer your question, each person, boarding must show ID's, show passports or BC's, and be verified, so each person must be at the counter.

However, to make it easier, the minute a staff member sees that you need assistance, they will take your enitire party to a special line, so the wait time would not be an issue. Also, those that need assistance will have priority boarding for their safety.

If you need a wheelchair, they will get you one, however, you might need to wait. The wheelchair is only for boarding, and not for the trip. You never said whether or not you have a wheelchair. If you don't, than maybe you can figure out locally how to borrow one? Just a suggestion, because it would be easier at all the ports etc.

I have been to 4 different ports, and although my wife does have a wheelchair, we never had to wait long, and always had staff members direct us to where to go and were always escorted on the ship.

We were on the Dream last month and I needed assisted boarding. My only option was a wheelchair. We waited for only a few minutes and one turned up. My son pushed me on, we had a separate screening, elevator, were directed to a checkin desk, and then directly onto the ship. We arrived just before 11:30, and were at a table in the main dining room at 12 noon. Which wasn't where we meant to end up, but there we were.

In Long Beach we waited two hours for a wheelchair for my MIL. We are all platinum, but they said they had problems getting a chair because all the people in regular check-in were using them. They have to go further with the wheelchair in Long Beach to get out to Platinum check-in.
