Spending Money On Board

What procedure does NCL use for money you spend on board? I've seen mention of having money in your account. The other line I cruised on used a sea pass, like a credit card. IIRC, on your last day you settled your account by approving it to be put on your credit card.

So, what is meant by "money in your account"?

NCL usues the sea pass like card, which you use for charging all your drinks and purchases on the ship. When you check in you give your Credit Card information and it is automatically settled out on the last day. You only have to settle your account if you would happen to find a mistake on the bill and need further varification.

You can "put money on your account" if you wish to pay cash instead of using the credit card.....or debit card. Basically you just bring the cash to the front desk and have it applied. Some people use cash only, and have to apply cash immediatly upon getting on the ship to activate their account....to cover the automatic tips, ect.

And some people purchase on-board credit well before the cruise, so there isn't a big balance at the end of the cruise.

I have done that, and have $1000 sitting there for our use. As we purchase something or take a tour, that amount will be deducted from our on-board credit. And the daily service charge will be covered too. We should be well under the amount, but one never knows what one might see and want.

And we don't sail until 9/24. So NCL has our money accruing interest for them, rather than for me, but it is easier for me to budget this way.

We don't usually have a huge bill at the end of the cruise, but just wanted to be safe, rather than sorry.

If you still have funds left in your account that you deposited , and have had all your "bills" paid for , how do you retrieve the balance if it's the last day of the cruise ?

thanks ..Cheers........the Ump.....:D

@umpy10-

We pay by CC as well as cash. During the last evening I go to the front desk and ask for a printout of the bill. I'll look it over briefly, and either pay the balance or get a refund. That avoids the last minute hassle on the final morning.

Via iPod touch and Tapatalk.

You then become one of the chumps standing in line instead of enjoying your cruise.

What some will do is have a bit less funds (OBC or CASH) on the account for what they think they will spend. The also give them a credit card that can be used for that last few bucks without requiring you to visit the desk to get a refund. Say you give them $800 in cash. You guess you will spend $900 and wind up at $885, for example. You could go pay them $85, or just let it go on the charge card and pay it next month.

I do get a little chuckle when people say they do not want a big bill at the end of the cruise. You will still get a big bill, but of course the balance due will be lowered by the amount you already gave them. There is no way for the bill to "go away". ( I AM NOT SLAMMING ANYBODY FOR THIS PRACTICE - just sharing)

My niece went with us last year. She is young and doesn't have a real high credit balance. She checked in on embarkation day with her credit card and then about half way through the cruise when she knew she had bought the few souvenirs on board that she was going to buy, some of the daily service charges had been applied, etc. she went down and asked for a print out of her bill. She then paid that amount in cash. So on the last night when she got her statement it was only a few dollars that were actually charged on her credit card, which is what she was aiming for - not to put the whole thing onto her card.

Me, I like it ALL to go on the card because we earn NCL points that way! :D

Whenever...if ever... we win at the casino, we cash out our winnings and head straight for the front desk and pay down our bill. Sometimes it's only $100.00 :) but sometimes as much as $ 500.00 :D . We only play the slots, no more then $20.00 per night per person and we deduct that from the winnings; the rest goes toward our bill.

PS. Mistakes can happen.... ;)...so always ask for an updated statement of your account when paying down your bill.
