Clothing on the Summit---Live Report

Thought HDawson's statement was a good one and it made me think about dress codes and previous cruises on Celebrity, and if fact on HAL, Princess, and NCL.

Most people do observe the dress code, and I guess we do NOTICE the ones who do not because they are far and few between and stand out from the rest of us.

However, I do stick to my original statement, even though I do adhere to the dress code and do enjoy dressing for the evening, why do the cruiselines, Celebrity included offer a casual dining venue. Even if these people choose not to go into the show, casino, etc. they still have to walk through the ship in their casual clothing to go to dinner. In a way, the cruiselines are contradicting themselves by having casual dining on formal night and then stating in the daily paper that the dress code is formal, so is it formal in the the casual venue also????????????

Brigitte,

I hadn't thought about that, but you may have hit the nail on the head. We may be MUCH more sensitive to any issues here because we are in cruise withdrawal.

When we are on board a ship, we are way to involved with the cruise to pay much attention to details. Maybe this is just a form of group therapy and people vent here instead of at each other in person. Who knows, Cruise Critic may be preventing divorces all over the world.

It might be useful if people here will report how many Celebrity cruises where they observed wholesale disregard for the expected dress standard.
Not a single one, but should a minority hold sway with Celebrity, one could envision a day where there wasn't a standard for any of us to worry over.

As I've been reading threads like this for the last couple of months, I'm still trying to understand why some think that spending money provides some entitlement to do as they want regardless if it offends.

Moreover, Celebrity is so concerned about offending these people, they're unwilling to maintain any decorum for the rest of us.

December's cruise should be an interesting one. We're in a Sky Deck suite again, and while the Sunrise deck area above isn't part of the jogging track, it tends to be used that way. As a consequence, signs are posted that limit the hours for which it may be used for this, but you can bet that at 5:45 am, someone will be up there pounding around the perimeter of the ship, waking up everyone below (and yes, it can be quite loud, more than enough to awaken people). Nothing "wholesale" in the disregard for the rules, but in this case, all it takes is one inconsiderate person to do the damage. In this instance, the case is easily made that just one is too many.

But they will tell you, they paid their money just like the rest of us -- why should they be restricted from jogging when and where they want, even if it's not on the available jogging track and is directly above cabins?

You folks who think paying your fare entitles you to do as you please, mind the posted signs on the aft area of the Sunrise deck the 5 December '05 Galaxy cruise or you may find yourself running a gauntlet of fellow passengers all armed with snapping pool towels who have had enough!

Casual dining is a safety valve for any number of events.

a) family cruises where children are at an age where their attention spans won't tolerate being parked in a formal dining room for 2 hours

b) people who prefer sushi to the evening's main dining room entrees

c) people who will miss their normal seating due to shore excursions or other events

d) people who are just too pooped to dress up after a long day

and a host of others...

It is understood that people will have to transit to that location, and there is no need to traverse the locations that are the most "sensitive" in this regard.

I would also point out, ONCE AGAIN, that there is a bit of misinformation often spread here. I have scanned a "Celebrity Today!" from 10 March '05. Please note that the word used here is NOT "suggested", and the bold type in the scan isn't any addition by me... click here for the original text:

Note in Celebrity Today, Day 1, Page 3

It begins:

"Following are the required modes of attire for eveing dress..."

There can be no doubt whatsoever what Celebrity was trying to communicate with that word, is there?

I have been on many Celebrity cruises (just finished Buenos Aires/Valparaiso on the Infinity). Unquestionably cruises in the Caribbean (especially during Spring Break) and to Alaska which are by far mostly Americans, have far more "do as I please cruisers" then those cruises in the Med., Asia and South America which cater to a wider variety of nationalities. Within the last 10 years there has never been a time that I haven't noticed non-conformity and rapid change artists (after dinner), but I must say they are in the great minority. Frankly I have never understood this. Yes, certain people insist on their "comfort" at all costs, however seeing this reminds me of little less than a certain immaturity vis a vis a whining child who "don't wanna wear no tie". There are many brands of cruise line, and to the person who commented that all the lines are the same with respect to this problem, all I can say is NONSENSE. I travel regularly on Silversea and Crystal (aside from Celebrity) and for the most part on my many cruises on those ships, this has proven to be a virtual non-issue. Simply a different type of cruiser with a different set of attitudes. Do your homework and find the right brand to suit your needs, but once chosen, don't complain that you didn't know and further be respectful of the choice, and the reasons for that choice of others.

Go Jeff! I believe it should be a non-issue as well.

Calderson,

What ship and date are you going on in Dec.? We are doing the Connie 12/10.

Barbara

If the signature clock is doing what it should be, should indicate Galaxy. It's our "substitute" for the fact that Celebrity has decided to scrap their "Ultimate Caribbean" itinerary.

I don't care what anyone wears on formal nights as long as they keep having formal nights!!! I love to dress up and love to be escorted by a handsome gentleman in a tux! So you do what you want, just don't take the formal nights away! Some of us love it!!!
