An Owl on Voyager of the Seas!?

Cannedpears

Recommended Posts

Last December i took a cruise on the Voyager going out of Galveston. About 500 miles out i was eating at Johnny Rockets and noticed an Owl flying around the ship in broad daylight! Here's the vid i took of the incident.

Has anyone ever seen that before?

I've wondered about that happening with birds and big ships. Owls, I believe our primarily nocturnal, I could see one finding a safe spot in a quiet cubby hole one morning being caught away from its normal home and then getting chased out of it later and not being able to make it to land. I've seen small birds hanging out around the outdoor eating areas scavenging food from diners while ships leave port, but most of them leave before the ship gets too far.

Yup. Last year on the Triumph we had several visitors. The most interesting was this pelican who sat on the front tower all day. I only saw him leave early in the morning when he would fly off and hover over the water looking for fish. I went out and watched him every morning of the 7 day cruise.

We only noticed these little birds (a butt-load of them) as we approached Roatan. Not sure if they stayed around the whole time, but they were brave (and very tired) and would land right on the railing to rest.

After Roatan, I found this hawk looking thing checking out the main bridge. I saw him again on one of the last days of the cruise as well.

Maybe they were just following me???? :-)

Cannedpears--that is really, really cool!!! Strange and random question, but had you lost anyone close to you recently? I had a crazy incident with an owl that happened shortly after my stepmother passed away. It was so odd that I just had to look up the significance of owls, and now nobody will ever be able to tell me that it was not a sign from my stepmother. And our family had several other owl-related things happen shortly thereafter. I know some folks will think I'm nutting for thinking this way, but owls will always have a special meaning to me now. :)

This little guy actually let me pick him up out of a plastic shrub on the Liberty OTS pre inaugural. Since then I have noticed these tropical finches on many cruises. Once outside the window in Windjammer, we saw that the crew had obviously set out a plate of crumbs and a cup of wate for one who had set up residence in a kind of crows nest thingy. A couple weeks ago on Carnival Ecstasy there were several finches and one hummingbird that we actually saw quite clearly as he flew up to a woman having breakfast in the grill area to investigate her tropical blouse. We all sat there with our mouths open. She said "Was that a hummingbird!" It was. She was about 2 ft from us. Didn't have a camera, drat!

A Hoopoe bird landed on the Celebrity Summit on a greek islands cruise. I was the only person who was interested. I watched it for a while as it rested on the rail. We weren't too far from land so I'm sure it would have been fine. I have photos but can't work out how to get it to appear on here:o,

I had a bat flying around the balcony my last cruise. We had stopped in Costa Rica that day but were at sea. I had gone onto the balcony after dark to look at the stars and the bat came swooping by. I'm sure he was attracted to the bugs circling some of the ship lights and not to me, but I was still hesitant to be out there with it flying around. We had two sea days after that and I didn't see it again. I don't know if it tried to head back to land or if it found another area of the ship with a better bug population than my balcony.

We're all a little nutty... It's the extra crunchy ones you have to worry about.:D

Did someone say "extra crunchy"? I resemble that remark!

Neat video, that looked very much like a barn owl. Seems to me like it might have found a spot to hide out in the aft superstructure. Wonder how long it stayed with the ship?

This is not great picture but we had these little birds ride with us on the aft of the Rhapsody after we did the Panama Canal. It seemed like they wanted a ride and many of them were found dead the following day..........Very sad.

Aww, poor things. I didn't know Royal Caribbean executed passengers without a sea pass. :p Jk that's kinda depressing.:(

Normally I would laugh at this and perhaps even consider a little ridicule. ;) However, my mother in law (a dear woman) had a Monarch butterfly land on her nose at least 3 times that I witnessed in my years of knowing her. Now I've never seen that happen to anyone anywhere. Now after she died, a few times Monarch's have followed us around, I think of her.

That's awesome, I wonder what it means if an owl lands on your nose? trip to the emergency room probably.
