Great pic! And thanks for asking - and thank you, Michelle, for the instructions. I've been wondering the same and was able to adapt the instructions for my Picasa photos. All these years on CC and I can finally post a full size picture. :o Here's one of the Gem in one my favorite ports.

LOL Sometimes even I can't believe I was there, so maybe you're right! ;) Full disclosure, I didn't take the pic, but was standing right next to my sister when she did. :)

I JUST read your review doxies - I am telling you, you received AMAZING treatment from your first week concierge (YOU HEAR THAT CARNIVAL! :p;))

Checking on you twice/day. Escorting you to "VIP reserved show seats" - yeah, if you read Doxie's review - we did NOT get that on Gem. ;) (YOU HEAR THAT NCL! :p:D)

Yes Belkys was EXCELLENT ! You could tell she really liked her job.

Sorry your conc. on the Gem didnt do that for you - and btw, we didnt ASK her for anything. She just did it.

Maybe CC copied it from Mooder's sister? :D lol

Mooder - I hope to have THAT shot too one day - it's on my "bucket list" ;)

LOL

Yes, you must - I highly recommend it. And cruising out of Venice is the only thing that beats cruising by the Statue of Liberty.

Love, love, love your review! Thank you so much for posting it! I am dying to go to Bermuda(and would liek to try NCL) and am hoping the Gem will be sailing there in 2013! It seems like such a long way off though.

I was just wondering if you had any trouble gettng to the correct pier in NYC? We live in PA as well(only 2 hours away from NYC) and have never cruised out of there.

Sometimes you also see Friends of Dorothy gatherings, which are social meet & greets for LGBTQ cruisers and family/friends. Occasionally these will be scheduled spontaneously, but any cruise director will schedule one on request too, just noting it in one of the early daily schedules that folks can meet up in x lounge at y time. Origins can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friend_of_Dorothy

I did one time see a schedule that was a little less coy, simply calling it an afternoon snack for gay and lesbian cruisers and their families. It could be argued that that is better, because a lot of younger folk don't know what Friend of Dorothy refers to, and because unlike with AA, the presumption of any need or desire for anonymity/discretion is in this instance is (often?) outdated.

Hi Michele,

WOW! Sounds like an amazing trip! We are considering doing a cruise aboard the GEM in March but have been a little nervous about booking as we have never done a vaca of this type with our two little girls (7 & 9). Since you are obviously a seasoned cruiser with kids, maybe you can answer some of my Q's Since we are traveling with our kids we were hoping to avoid the "party boat" and are looking for more of a "family" atmosphere. How would you rate this cruise according to that criteria ? Have read a review saying that things can get kind of wild and finding a pile of vomit in one of the public bathrooms. Not cool. Hoping to avoid that kind of thing. Your firsthand opinion would mean a lot ! Any advice/info/insight would be very much appreciated!

Have you ever gone away to a hotel and found something less than appealing in a hallway or public area? It's like that. Sometimes things happen. Usually they do not. In fact the staff of a cruise ship is, generally speaking, more on top of mishaps like that than any hotel or amusement park you will visit.

I almost didn't read this review because we are sailing on the Star, not the Gem. Boy am I glad I read it! What a wonderful, wonderful review. The pictures, the details, everything was just perfect for a newbie like me. Thank you for sharing with us!

Thanks for the details on how to upload pics to CC!

"When you place them here on Cruise Critic, copy/paste the {IMG Code} for the big pictures. You are attaching a thumbnail and that's why you get the small pictures. Instead, go to photobucket, click underneath the picture where it says {IMG Code} and that should "copy" it, then come here to cruise critic, create your message and then right click and "paste it" into the message body and VOILA - big pictures. Just make sure you upload the pictures at MEDIUM (I think its 800x600) or less. If not, then the pics will be HUGE and you will have to remove them and you will have the other CCers yelling at you...LOL"

Thank you for your wonderful review. We just booked the same stateroom yesterday but not until Jan of 2014 to the Eastern Caribbean. I can't wait!!!!:D

Although this summer we will be sailing to Bermuda on the Star:p

Awesome!!!! I still miss that bathroom...lol of all things to miss ;) I miss the shower.

And to the person who asked about pics of the "boarding area" - no i didn't because inside the boarding area is against port security and outside - I am usually in a mad dash ;)

Thank you for such an amazing review!!!

I have to say as far as the swim diaper thing goes, we just took our first cruise (my 2nd) as a family (RCI Freedom of the Seas)and have to admit the reason we waited so long was because we didn't want to go until both of my boys were fully potty trained. They're 3 1/2 and 5 1/2. It amazes me (as well as angers me) how people have no regard for rules.

I can't wait to see your review of the Epic as that's out next cruise (1/5/13 for hubby's 30th).

Thank you again for the amazing pics and great details.

thank you for the great review and beautiful pictures.Do you know how much the beach chair rental is on horseshoe bay beach? I thought i read it but i can't find it now. I am going on the star in may and you gave very helpful information.

I did a little searching (we didn't rent chairs) and it looks like they are $11.00

Hi Michele,

We just got off the Jewel yesterday. Had a wonderful time but missed seeing you & your family on board!

Dolores

Aww Dolores! Wish I could have been there! Meeting you and your family was truly a highlight of my Gem cruise. Happy sailings in the future!
