Cozumel, Mexico (Monday): I’m super excited today as Cozumel is the reason I chose this itinerary. In 7 cruises this was my first visit to Mexico. Originally, I had planned to do the Cozumel Highlights Tour for $30 pp through Island Marketing, however, the tour was full by the time I got around to making my reservation. Therefore, plan B was put into place.

 

We stopped into a few of the touristy shops at the pier for a few souvenirs. I bought my 8 y/o brother a Mexican wresting masks and I’m pretty sure that makes me the best sister ever…..well at least for 2 weeks anyway. As we left the stores, I asked for directions to the taxis. Once we found them, I asked the nice man assigning cabs if we could have a tour. He was very professional and said that for $90 we could have a private 3 ½ hour tour of the island with an English Speaking driver. He showed us a map of the island and all the places we’d go. EXCELLENT!

 

Our driver was Alfredo, we was also very nice and my cousin and I were the only passengers in his taxi van. I must say, it was great getting a private tour and not being held up by a van full of strangers moving at their own pace. I found Cozumel very clean and safe and I can’t wait to return.

We continue our tour along the coast, stopping at the many beach bars for photo ops. As we’re driving, we pass several tourists in colorful dunn buggies, jeeps and rental cars. It was the perfect day for renting a vehicle and driving the coast. The traffic was practically non- existent and there was none of the crazy, reckless driving that I’ve witnessed by the locals on other islands.

Since we spent a lot of at San Gervasio and stopped for so many photos, we only had 20 minutes left to our tour by the time we arrived at Paradise Beach. We asked Alfredo how much a taxi was back to the ship from the beach and were told $13. We decided to pay Alfredo the $90 for our tour, plus tip and told him we’d take a taxi back to the ship.

As soon as you walk into Paradise Beach there is a gift shop and just behind that a big beautiful pool with rinse-off showers nearby. We walked toward the beach, claimed a couple of loungers and were in heaven! It was super hot, but the beach wasn’t very crowded at all. Apparently, we were sailing just before the high season starts in Nov. After several minutes, a beach attendant arrived to sell us our $2 pp bracelets for use of the chairs and umbrellas. There were water toys, but we weren’t using them so I’m not sure of the charge.

We ordered chips and salsa ($5.50), bottled water ($2.50) and a pineapple smoothie ($5.50) from one of the other attendants and enjoyed the rest of our afternoon. Honestly, you can’t beat spending the day at Paradise Beach. It’s inexpensive, the sand was being raked and smoothed, the workers were friendly and it was clean. The water wasn’t as clear as I expected it to be, but I’m from NJ so I’m not complaining about water clarity, hahahahaha

[FONT=Calibri][SIZE=4][B]Krystal and I were EXHAUSTED after our day in Cozumel. My cousin has sun sensitive skin and I had the WORSE headache when we returned to the ship. I find it really difficult to get in enough water when I’m cruising, so I may have been dehydrated. In any case, we went to the room and fell out! The rest of the evening was a blur. I vaguely remember a conversation about whether or not to go to dinner, followed by my cousin saying she was going to Lido. A couple of hours later, I wake up and she’s knocked out. I somehow find myself at Lido eating at the Deli. In my sun hangover, I manage to stop by the casino and make a deposit into the slots before going back to the cabin and falling back into the bed. [SIZE=3][FONT=Calibri][B]Second Sea Day (Tuesday): [/B]I loved having a sea day after Mexico. We needed it. Today was another beautiful, relaxing sea day. Although, we don’t lie out on Lido, I must say that the chair hogs were in full effect! It was ridiculous. It would be 10am and half the chairs were empty, but covered by a sea of blue Carnival towels. The worse chair hog offender was in the Venetian Palace. We had arrived for a show and a woman had taken off her flip flops and placed them in seats to save them! Unbelievable. [/FONT][/SIZE]
