DH and I are leaving out of NYC in Sep of next year, I've never been anywhere that large and it's just so confusing. We are planning on adding 2 days at the beginning of the cruise and are wondering where to avoid and possibly any reccomendations on good hotels in safe places in the city. Obviously we have a lot of transportation options in NYC the quickest and most affordable I see would be the subway, but I hear so many scary stories about the subway that I'm pretty iffy on trying it. I'm just trying to plan waaaaay ahead, thanks!!!

If you are worried about the subway no need to take it. If you like to walk you really can see a lot by walking and then there are cabs and buses.

With thousands of hotels there are all sorts of places to stay in NYC.

For starters maybe you want to check out places near Times Square.

You will be there Labor Day weekend - there are usually good hotel prices on Hotwire, but it's really too soon to pick a hotel. You want to stick with the midtown hotels. What is your hotel budget? You also want to look at your flight options to NY - there are 3 airports - LaGuardia, Newark and JFK. LGA is closest to midtown and you take a cab. JFK is furthest away, but a cab to Manhattan is a fixed price. Newark is in NJ and has an airport bus to NY for $15/pp. My first choice would be LGA, then Newark, and last JFK. However, if there is a substantial price difference to one of the airports, I'd pick that.

A lot of folks use the "hoho" buses to get from one tourist sight to another. There are various routes for midtown and downtown and you can get a 2 day pass that covers all loops - http://www.newyorksightseeing.com/ Most New Yorkers do a lot of walking - if you stay in midtown many things will be accessible on foot.

New York is much different than it used to be. Times Square used to be crime, pornography and drugs. Now it is Disney and tourists. It is generally safe to walk around Manhattan. Similarly, the subway is generally safe and much cleaner than it was. It can be confusing, however. There is also a good public bus system.
