We played the three machines that the OP mentioned during our repo cruise and found that they were pretty generous although our winnings were nowhere near what the OP experienced. They required a bet of $1.00 or $1.25 per spin (depending on the machine) to qualify for the bonus. Goldfish and "Return of the Munny" were the very popular and generous machines. :)

 

Thanks. I work for a slot machine company (but not the one who makes those), so I was curious.

 

BTW I won $2k on my last Carnival Cruise playing $.25 video poker with a max/$1.25 bet. Made for a happy cruise. Although they did give me the 1099 form.

Strictly speaking, if you're a US citizen or US Permanent Resident, the IRS requires you pay taxes on your world wide income. We are one of the few, if not only, countries in the world that has that rule on the books.

 

Now that being said -- absent the cruiseline issuing a 1099G and filing a copy with Uncle Sam -- only you can decide how comfortable you may feel in not reporting the money you won. Being pragmatic, I understand the odds may be slim of being called in for an audit. The chance exists, though, that when you deposit the money in your bank, that the bank may file a CTR with OFAC, which may or may not contact the IRS with that information.

 

There's the letter of the law (the revenue code) VS. the odds of not being caught if you don't claim the income.

Venicegal - I won about $4,000 a few years back (maybe 5 or 7) on RCI and never received a 1099 and never claimed it. Great WIN for you - CONGRATS!!

I've been on Liberty of the Seas twice, Navigator once and Jewel once. The Jewel's casino, in my opinion, had the loosest slots overall. I won $6,000 (multiple jackpots) on one of their 2 cent machines last year. I did win $1,000 on video poker on NOS but LOS was a disaster -- both times. Couldn't win anything on any machine. I don't understand why some cruise lines deduct the tax. RCCL does not. I find their Club Royale very generous, too. Big discounts on cruises plus cash back and free drinks in the casino. Can't wait until my next cruise on Mariner, Jan 2 from Galveston. Does anyone have good experience in the Mariner casino?

Someone very close to me won on Royal over $1200 - no 1099 given

It must be a corporate decision. It seems Carnival always gives you a 1099 but RCI. I just netted the winnings against my losses and didn't pay any tax anyway, but it would be so much nicer to just not get the 1099 at all.

Which machine was it?? Last month I fed those penny machines alot.....I'm curious which one it was or where it was located.....I know those machines well.....they're holding to some of my money for safekeeping until I can get back.....I live right up the road from you...feel free to bring me some of my pennies back :p

checking with your CPA is a very good idea, there is no wayI would trust anyone on a cruise ship to give me good information about American Tax Laws.

 

A good friend of mine use to be a casino manager for NCL. and he told me that many of his employees would act like they knew everything about Casino winnings, they do not.

 

Unless the tax laws have changed in the last 24 hours everyone is legaly required to clame all income on there taxes, it can be off set by losses that can be proven (very easy to do). Laws about paying tax on casino winnings when on cruise ships vary from country to country. I am only talking about laws tha tcover United States citizens.

Hummmm....I just noticed....my "neighbor" also joined CC on Oct 2004, but has less posts than me....I thought I was "low" for signing on over 7 years ago.....you obviously lurk more than I do :)

I asked the same thing and didn't get a reply, so apparently they're not divulging what machine it was.....

I was wondering if it was one of the Cleopatra ones or the Texas oil ones. I didn't mean the actual machine. I liked playing the Cleopatra ones and they paid pretty well for a penny machine.
